Book Primer of Christian Evidence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Christian Evidence Christian Evidence describes the arguments which are employed in support of Christianity. It should be clearly understood, that, when Christians undertake to meet those who doubt, or resist, the claims which are made on behalf of Christianity, they do not assume that they can remove every difficulty which may be suggested; as that would be an assumption beyond the true modesty of those who remember the limitations of human faculties and the nature of the subject. Neither do they ignore the fact that opposition to the claims of religious truth may proceed from a state of mind which is itself the result of moral causes, and therefore to be chiefly removed by moral and spiritual means. But they address arguments to unbelievers, i.e. to those who demand them; as meeting them on their own ground. And they supply believers with the reasons which support their faith; that they may both believe more firmly, and resist the influence of objectors, whose words are sometimes artfully prepared to shake confidence, even where they cannot overthrow established positions. Particular and fragmentary objections to Christianity are common. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Christian Evidence The original work, which formed the basis of this handbook, was only a compend. The first edition, though quite large, was speedily exhausted. Since it has been out of print, there have been so many calls for it, sometimes in large quantities, that both the publisher and the author feel justified in issuing the present edition. It is cause for hopefulness and for gratitude to God that, even in these days of many departures from the faith, books of an evangelical order are in demand. Outworks may be Of more or less value; but as long as the key Of the position can be held in force, the place is safe. I am using the language Of metaphor, but its application to the defence Of Christianity is Obvious. Let us then follow the example Of our military generals, and concentrate our defence on those points which are vital to its truth as a Divine revelation; and if there is a single key which commands the entire Christian position, let us order our entire argument so as to occupy it with our utmost strength. The Christian Evidences are of this kind; for while they form an inseparable branch of theological study, they are manifestly included also in the province of general history. He, therefore, who devotes himself to the know ledge of whatever relates to the past condition of mankind, is free to examine these evidences nay, he is bound to examine them - apart from their connection with religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Aspects of Christian Evidences Among well-founded beliefs, Christianity is not peculiar in being incapable of demonstrative proof and in being open to a variety of objections which are difficult to answer. Of the misleading tendencies in modern thought, one of the most serious is that of setting up an unreasonable standard of proof as the necessary basis for active belief. Indeed, in a vast number of instances, the insistence upon experimental or demonstrative proof is so unreasonable that it amounts to a species of insanity. Many who yield themselves to this tendency come to distrust ordinary evidence just as a certain class of insane persons do their best friends. Their condition of mind is like that of those who are so afraid of poison that it is with the utmost difficulty that they are persuaded that anything is free from it, while life is too short to admit of a preliminary mathematical demonstration of the fact. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular Handbook of Christian Evidences As to the importance of the subject, no sane man can question it. Nor can any one who has understanding of the times doubt the obligation which is laid on believers to vindicate, in every available form, the grounds of their faith. The burden of proof lies on them, and they must bear it. But unbelievers should remember at the same time that their position is not rational or defensible, unless they can furnish a better explanation of the universe than is to be found in the doctrine of an Intelligent Creator, and a better explanation of the wonderful story of the Gospels than is to be found in the admission of their truth. Whatever be the difficulties of faith, the difficulties of unbelief are greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of Christianity Evidences in the wider sense. - And so the student of Christian Evidences is justified in including within the scope of his inquiry those elementary ideas of God and religion which, though not distinctive of Christianity, are its groundwork. In taking this wider sweep he is enabled to meet the arguments of different classes of assailants. There are those who profess belief in a God while denying in whole or in part the truth of the Christian revelation. There are also Opponents with whom he seems to have less in common. Besides the Atheist, who utterly denies the existence of a God, there is the Agnostic, who grudgingly admits the possibility of a God, but asserts that if He does exist He cannot possibly be known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The following pages, therefore, will discuss the Christian Evidences in an order modeled upon that which is constantly followed in our legal tribunals. There the examination of the evidence presented consists of two main parts; and the inquiry is made - first, whether the testimony offered is actual testimony in the case under consideration - that is, whether it has any material bearing upon the case, and whether it is true; and, secondly, being mate rial and true, what is its weight? Accord ingly, such is the order followed here. The work is therefore divided into two Parts: The Second Part discusses - The Weight of the Ev idence in favor of the Divinity of Christianity, and presents in its proof: (a) The Superhu man Facts upon which Christianity is founded, as displayed in - l. The Advent of Christ; 2. The Character of Christ; 3. His Teachings; 4. His Prophecies; 5. His Miracles. (b) Its Superhuman Results, in the changes it has wrought in the characters and lives of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of the Christian Revelation and Lectures on Paley's Evidences Christianity on this ground too, as on many others, ' has, we think, not only won for herself the safety of a defence but has been enriched by the spoils of a victory. If m the first Book of this work, we have chiefly to do with the miraculous argument in the abstract; we pass in the second to that argument in the concrete, or consider the actual evidence for the miracles of the gospel. Even in this department it will be found to be more a work of principles than of details; and there are few of its lessons which we should, in opposition to a' prevalent bias, so like adequately to impress on the understand ing of the reader - as the inherently greater strength of evidence given by the scriptural than by the ex -scriptural, or by the origi nal than the subsequent witnesses for the truth' of the evangeli cal history; and also the far superior value of the Christian to the heathen testimonies.
