Book The Chimpanzees of the Budongo Forest

Download or read book The Chimpanzees of the Budongo Forest written by Vernon Reynolds and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike humans, who came down from the trees and developed bipedal locomotion, chimpanzees have remained in the original habitat of our ancestors: the tropical rainforests of Africa. In this book, Vernon Reynolds describes in detail the work of a large number of students and senior researchers on the wild chimpanzees of the Budongo Forest Reserve in Western Uganda. He presents a coherent and in-depth account of one chimpanzee community of more than 60 individuals living in the Sonso area in the middle of the Budongo Forest, which he and his colleagues have studied intensively over the last 15 years. The chimpanzees have never been provisioned and live in an entirely natural state. Reynolds describes their forest habitat, their diet and culture, their social organization and behaviour, their diseases, and the threats to them that derive from the actions of people in the surrounding villages, the most serious of these being the presence of snares set by hunters to catch small antelopes and pigs. As founder and head of the Budongo Forest Project, Professor Reynolds has been responsible for compiling the numerous publications, reports, and dissertations written about these chimpanzees. In this book, he combines these new and often unpublished studies with past publications about Budongo Forest. Where appropriate, he also compares the Budongo chimpanzees with wild chimpanzees studied at other sites across Africa. The result is the most comprehensive account of the Budongo chimpanzees ever published, with a wealth of referenced material that will serve as a source of information for many years to come.

Book excerpt: Uganda Animal Kingdom. African might. There are a number of reasons why people are choosing to take Tour and holidays in Uganda out of all the 54 countries on the African continent. After many years of bad publicity from wars and disease, things turned around for Uganda, especially in 2006, when Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army were run out of the country. Some of the things that have caused this surge in popularity and made Uganda make it to the list of the top 20 travel destinations include; Primates such as Gorillas: It came to the attention of both Uganda and the rest of the world that Uganda is primate country. From monkeys, to baboons to chimpanzees and to the rare and sought after golden monkeys and mountain gorillas. There is no better country to visit if you are looking to see primates of different kinds. In the past five years gorilla trekking in Uganda has become one of the most sought after Africa safari adventures. The pearl of Africa is home to more than half of the world's population of mountain gorillas, and some of these have been habituated so visitors can get to see them in their natural habitat. Chimpanzees too are an attraction in Uganda, they are found in various places in the western part of Uganda. The golden monkeys, also quite a rare species are found in Mgahinga national park on the foothills of the Virunga Mountains. It is because of the abundance of primates that Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga national park, and other parks in the western part of the country have a lot of tourist traffic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These compelling stories and photographs take us to places like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Ivindo National Park in Gabon, and the Taï National Park in Côte d’Ivoire for an intimate and revealing look at the lives of African wild apes—and at the lives of the humans who study them. In tales of adventure, research, and conservation, veteran field researchers and conservationists describe exciting discoveries made over the past few decades about chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. The book features vivid descriptions of interactions among these highly intelligent creatures as they hunt, socialize, and play. More difficult themes emerge as well, including the threats apes face from poaching, disease, and deforestation. In stories that are often moving and highly personal, this book takes measure of how special the great apes are and discusses positive conservation efforts, including ecotourism, that can help bring these magnificent animals back from the brink of extinction.

Book The Chimpanzees of Rubondo Island

Download or read book The Chimpanzees of Rubondo Island written by Josephine Nadezda Msindai and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a random batch of chimpanzees come to populate a small island in Tanzania where apes had never lived before? Combining information gathered from fieldwork, laboratory and archival research, this book tells the unique story of chimpanzee babies taken from their forest homes in West-Central Africa and sold to European zoos and circuses, to then be shipped to Lake Victoria and set free on Rubondo Island. These founder animals learnt what to eat, how to build nests, to breed and raise young – ultimately forming a chimpanzee-typical fission–fusion society that today is thriving. The authors compare the ecology, behaviour and genetics of the Rubondo population with communities of wild chimpanzees, providing exciting insights into how our closest relatives adjust to changing environments. At the same time, a reconstruction of the historical context of the Rubondo experiment reflects on its chequered colonial heritage, and the introduction is viewed against current threats to the survival of apes in their natural habitats. The book will be of interest to scholars and professionals working in primatology, animal behaviour, conservation biology and postcolonial studies.
