Download or read book Reducing Risks for Mental Disorders written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding of how to reduce risk factors for mental disorders has expanded remarkably as a result of recent scientific advances. This study, mandated by Congress, reviews those advances in the context of current research and provides a targeted definition of prevention and a conceptual framework that emphasizes risk reduction. Highlighting opportunities for and barriers to interventions, the book draws on successful models for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, injuries, and smoking. In addition, it reviews the risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse and dependence, depressive disorders, and conduct disorders and evaluates current illustrative prevention programs. The models and examination provide a framework for the design, application, and evaluation of interventions intended to prevent mental disorders and the transfer of knowledge about prevention from research to clinical practice. The book presents a focused research agenda, with recommendations on how to develop effective intervention programs, create a cadre of prevention researchers, and improve coordination among federal agencies.

Book Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health

Download or read book Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health written by Michael T. Compton and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., the 16th U.S. Surgeon General, we know a great deal more about treating mental illnesses than about preventing them and promoting mental health. In his foreword to Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health, Dr. Satcher applauds this guide as timely and vital, as it provides new and emerging research on the importance of prevention in mental health. Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health was conceived through discussions within the Prevention Committee of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), and features contributions from 30 highly regarded clinicians and researchers who are experienced in the treatment and prevention of specific types of mental illnesses. Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health will help you move toward widespread adoption of mental illness prevention in your own practice setting. This important new reference provides practical suggestions to help you work toward preventing, or implementing preventive measures in the treatment of Mood disorders Anxiety disorders Schizophrenia Substance use disorders Suicidality Family violence Conduct disorder and other adolescent disorders Late-life depression, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment Physical illnesses in psychiatric settings Cigarette smoking Compared with other areas of medicine, such as the prevention of infectious disease, our understanding of the prevention of mental illnesses remains in a relatively nascent state, especially in terms of how prevention can be incorporated into routine clinical practice. The authors of the various chapters have endeavored to balance reviewing the available research knowledge with providing guidance for practicing clinicians on how such knowledge can be incorporated into everyday practice. Clinical Manual of Prevention in Mental Health urges clinicians everywhere to inquire about risk factors and protective factors in patients' lives in addition to focusing on the presenting problem. It is the authors' intent to provide mental health professionals with the knowledge and practical applications necessary to be prevention-minded in all of their interactions with patients, families, and the community.

Book Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry

Download or read book Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry written by Robert M. McCarron and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry: A Practical Guide for Clinicians was written for psychiatrists in training and in clinical practice, as well as other health care providers who wish to learn an evidence-based and user-friendly approach to prevent commonly encountered, treatable, and potentially deadly illnesses in their patients. The poor health and early mortality of people with serious mental illnesses has been well documented: People who have serious mental illness have increased general medical comorbid conditions, receive minimal preventive medical services, and have a reduced life span of as much as thirty years when compared to the general population. In addition, there is now extensive data showing bidirectional interactions between chronic medical illnesses and mental disorders. Clearly, treating the whole person, instead of the disorder in isolation, is critical to improving outcomes and reducing suffering. The book's logical structure makes it easy to use, with sections devoted to general principles of preventive psychiatry, cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders, endocrine and metabolic disorders, infections disorders, and oncologic disorders. In addition, the volume: Provides evidence-based approaches to care across the prevention spectrum, from primary prevention (how to keep people healthy), to secondary prevention (how to detect early signs of common illnesses), through tertiary prevention (how to prevent disability and adverse outcomes once patients develop medical problems). Informs clinicians about how to more effectively interface with general medical practitioners, and instructs them in providing screening for common medical problems, as well as ensuring that preventive measures, such as vaccinations, are performed. Covers, in a section addressing "special topics," child, adolescent, and geriatric populations, as well as strategies for assessing and managing chronic pain. Concludes with an appendix that features a health questionnaire, Preventive Medicine in Psychiatry (PMAP), for use in screening and follow-up, and a handy summary of age based preventive medicine recommendations, references to which clinicians will return repeatedly. The Affordable Care Act has provided mental health practitioners with new opportunities to develop integrated models of care that better serve patients and populations, furthering the existing trend of treating the whole patient. Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry: A Practical Guide for Clinicians is a critical resource which will prove indispensable to clinicians dedicated to improving the quality of life and longevity for patients who suffer from serious mental illness. Twenty-five percent of royalties help support Resident-Fellow Members (RFM) within the California Psychiatric Association.

This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, an edition supported by the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), contains selected papers from the Symposium of the WPA Section of Preventive Psychiatry - held during the 10th World Congress of Psychiatry - together with invited papers by worldwide renowned experts in psychiatric prevention. The editors emphasize that health cannot be defined only by the absence of illness, but that its definition has to include the 'ey eexein (well-being) of the Ancient Greeks. To achieve the aim of mental health and to prevent psychiatric disorders it is essential to collaborate with all professionals involved (e.g. teachers, priests, policemen, journalists etc.). As pointed out by Norman Sartorius (president of the WPA) in his preface the book 'is likely to facilitate implementation of prevention programs and hopefully will lead 'to the improvement of the quality and quantity of life for many people and the society as a whole.

Book Preventing Psychological Disorders in Service Members and Their Families

Download or read book Preventing Psychological Disorders in Service Members and Their Families written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being deployed to a war zone can result in numerous adverse psychological health conditions. It is well documented in the literature that there are high rates of psychological disorders among military personnel serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq as well as among the service members' families. For service members' families, the degree of hardship and negative consequences rises with the amount of the service members' exposure to traumatic or life-altering experiences. Adult and child members of the families of service members who experience wartime deployments have been found to be at increased risk for symptoms of psychological disorders and to be more likely to use mental health services. In an effort to provide early recognition and early intervention that meet the psychological health needs of service members and their families, DOD currently screens for many of these conditions at numerous points during the military life cycle, and it is implementing structural interventions that support the improved integration of military line personnel, non-medical caregivers, and clinicians, such as RESPECT-Mil (Re-engineering Systems of Primary Care Treatment in the Military), embedded mental health providers, and the Patient-Centered Medical Home. Preventing Psychological Disorders in Service Members and Their Families evaluates risk and protective factors in military and family populations and suggests that prevention strategies are needed at multiple levels - individual, interpersonal, institutional, community, and societal - in order to address the influence that these factors have on psychological health. This report reviews and critiques reintegration programs and prevention strategies for PTSD, depression, recovery support, and prevention of substance abuse, suicide, and interpersonal violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international survey defines mental health as a basic human right, and tracks the emergence of mental health prevention and promotion as a global priority. Locating mental illness within a cycle of negative causes and effects affecting human quality of life, the editors identify modern policy barriers to promotion/prevention initiatives, particularly the favoring of the biomedical health model by major stakeholders. The book’s selection of successful programs from diverse countries displays a lifespan approach, emphasizing the centrality of interdisciplinary educational settings in providing primary and secondary prevention and promotion interventions, and the ongoing fight against missing financial investigations, discrimination and stigma. Together, these papers make a forceful argument for rights- based responses to worldwide mental health needs as part of the commitment toward global human rights and long-term development goals. Included in the coverage: · Mental health priorities around the world. · Social determinants of mental health. · Mental health and stigma: aspects of anti-stigma interventions. · Promoting social and emotional wellbeing and responding to mental health problems in schools. · The promotion and delivery of mental health services in primary care settings. · Economic evaluation of mental health promotion and mental illness prevention. Bringing to the fore public health concerns that are too often marginalized, Global Mental Health is necessary reading for health professionals, health and clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, medical sociologists, and policymakers.

Book Study Guide to Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry

Download or read book Study Guide to Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry written by Robert M. McCarron and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study Guide to Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry: A Case Approach is an indispensable companion to Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry: A Practical Guide for Clinicians. Like the primary text, the study guide was written by experts in the field -- many with dual training in psychiatry and medicine -- and it reflects the text's focus on clinical care for psychiatrists and other mental health care providers who work in outpatient mental health and integrated clinics. It is critical that mental health providers and trainees learn how to prevent and detect common medical conditions in their patients, who typically have higher rates of adverse health risk behaviors and may lack a primary care physician. Through the deft use of clinical cases, the study guide helps providers and trainees acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to view the patient holistically and improve outcomes. The study guide's authors employ effective organizational strategies and pedagogic features to achieve these objectives: The study guide's structure mirrors that of the primary text, with eight, multi-chapter sections authored by a team of leading experts in the respective areas. Chapter content is embodied in a series of clinical cases, each of which is followed by several multiple-choice questions, allowing readers to test their knowledge of the material. In the answer guide, the correct answer to each question is presented, along with an explanation and the corresponding page numbers from the primary text where more complete coverage can be found. This cross-referencing allows readers to contextualize the question and answer and provides them with the opportunity to consolidate their learning of important information. The original cases are well written and compelling, offering readers a level of detail and complexity that is both realistic and illustrative of key concepts in prevention, assessment, and treatment. In all, the study guide offers 93 cases and 290 multiple-choice questions covering every chapter in the text. In addition, more than 50 tables and figures are included to summarize vital information and illustrate important ideas. Mental health clinicians in practice or training will find Study Guide to Preventive Medical Care in Psychiatry: A Case Approach an essential, evidence-based tool for learning and translating a holistic, integrated model of care into the clinical arena.
