Book Primary Handwork Classic Reprint

Download or read book Primary Handwork Classic Reprint written by Ella Victoria Dobbs and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Handwork This book is the outgrowth of long experience as a teacher of primary grades, followed by special study of handwork as a factor in elementary education. It is written with three objects in view: First, to gather into a single volume various methods already in use in the more progressive schools, and for which the best suggestions are scattered through current periodicals: Second, to organize these methods and present them in a simple form for the use of teachers who have had no special training in handwork processes: Third, accepting conditions as they exist in the small town school and the one-room country school, as a basis of organization, to offer suggestions which may be easily adapted to the conditions of any school with a view to bringing present practice into closer harmony with the best educational ideals. No claim is laid to originality, beyond the small details in which one person's interpretation of a large problem will differ from that of another. The projects here outlined have been tested in the Public Schools of Columbia, Missouri, under conditions which are common to towns of about the same size. The point of view has been influenced chiefly by the educational philosophy of Prof. John Dewey, especially as expressed in his essay "The Child and the Curriculum." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Purposeful Handwork IT is my hope that this little manual will be re garded by the lay teacher as a compilation of sug gestions, and not as an extensive study, or final treatise on handwork. As society evolves, education must change to keep apace with it, so may this text serve as a waypost, not a goal. It was not my intention, originally, to write a book; the need developed and I met it as I could. The content of these few pages is the result of eight years of work, including experimental kinder garten and first grade teaching, physical education supervision in the elementary school, and Normal Training School instructing. I do not claim it to be original. It is a compila tion of suggestions and ideas which have come to me from my own little daughter, from the children whom it has been my good fortune to teach in public schools, from Normal School students, from observation of daily life, and from individual study. The projects described have been worked out in an average one-teacher, one-room public school kindergarten or first grade of mixed population. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Handwork Each course outlined 1s merely a suggestive one, but it is hoped that thoughtful teachers may find sufficient within the limits of this volume to enable them to introduce some or all of the several branches of the subject as herein considered. If a beginning be made, the ingenuity and inventive skill alike of teachers and pupils will enable each branch to he. Carried far beyond the exercises given in these pages. This is especially true of the design and pattern work, the scope for originality of thought and execution being practically unlimited in this interesting and attractive form of hand-and-eye Training. The author is greatly indebted to Mrs. S. B. Patterson, of the Kinder garten Training School at Truro, n.s., for many valuable suggestions and practical help in the revision of the chapters on the Primary work. The advanced portion is chiefly the result 'of the author's experience as a teacher and organizer of Manual Training in the schools of England and Canada. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Art Applied to Handwork, Vol. 1 The necessary deftness, skill, adaptability, and foresight, which the common applied arts require and engender, are surely 1n finitely to be preferred for our pupils, touching as they do 'the real and the concrete, and presenting in an attractive form replicas of the actual problems of life. Some such thoughts and aims may possibly have been In the minds of the framers of the first drawing scheme for elementary schools, though they certainly approached the subject from an Opposite pole, the form of the decorative units being their first consideration the old freehand copies), appropriate applica tion being left to take care of itself, or perhaps reserved for future development. Unfortunately, although this scheme was in operation for many years, it never generally reached the applied stage. Perhaps examinations helped to fix the original scheme and denied it development. Possibly, also, the class conditions that held in those days, when each school was a barrack con taining classes of from sixty to ninety as a usual thing, more than helped to crystallize and preserve its original shape. Handwork of any kind was then practically impossible, owing to this unwieldy size of classes so a short cut was tried, leaving out the necessary craft work and getting at once to the purely art work. Still, however much we are in agreement with the possible aims of the original scheme, it must be admitted it was a sad failure. At the present time, we are consequently wiser in the respect that we recognise that decoration should be a part of, or at least appropriate to, the object, or the tool that produces it, not some thing abstract or apart from it. Naturally, it follows that the two should not be separated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Illustrative Handwork for Elementary School Subjects

Download or read book Illustrative Handwork for Elementary School Subjects written by Ella Victoria Dobbs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrative Handwork for Elementary School Subjects: A Desk Manual for Classroom Teachers The studies which form the basis of this book were undertaken, not so much to prove the value of the methods, as to test the extent of their usefulness under the conditions existing in the ordinary school. Illustrative methods in various forms have, for some time, formed a regular part of the work in many progressive schools, but in some quarters the impression has prevailed that their usefulness is possible only under especially favorable conditions. A report of these studies was first submitted as a Master's Thesis in the Graduate School of the University of Missouri. Some of the principles upon which these studies are based are further discussed in a bulletin recently issued by the Manual Arts Department of the University of Missouri. The list of projects described in this book includes also many problems worked out in Columbia and other towns as a part of the everyday program and not as special studies. All of the projects here described were carried out in the regular classroom by the regular teacher under conditions common to the average school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Years in Handicraft AT the present time the United States leads the world in the excellence of its system Of public education. 'among its prominent features is the training in handwork, begun in the kindergarten and continued throughout the common-school years, whence it passes without break into the manual training high schools and special technical institutions. Of the several periods marking this manual training course the weakest is found in the primary school, dealing with pupils of from seven to eleven or twelve years of age. These children have outgrown the employment of the kindergarten and receiving class, but have yet to attain the growth qualify ing them for the forms Of handicraft common in the grammar grades. With a view to partially bridging this hiatus with the help of my many years of intimate acquaintance with children, I have devised these exercises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Art Applied to Handwork, Vol. 2 Some such thoughts and aims may possibly have been in the minds of the framers of the first drawing scheme for elementary schools, though they certainly approached the subject from an opposite pole, the form of the decorative units being their first consideration the old freehand copies), appropriate applica tion being left to take care of itself, or perhaps reserved for future development. At the present time, we are consequently wiser in the respect that we recognise that decoration should be a part of, or at least appropriate to, the object, or the tool that produces it, not some thing abstract or apart from it. Naturally, it follows that the two should not be separated. The first thing that would appear to hold in decoration is that the decorator should know something of the thing to be decorated. Otherwise the ornament is likely to resemble that of a Christmas tree - something affixed to the object, not an integral part of it. Herein lies the good that handwork is likely to have on applied art and on the child mind. The construction of the object or surface to be decorated gives a sound idea of the possibilities and appropriateness of the decoration. The maker of a book or box or metal cup will, cater-i's paribus, more certainly know the kind of decoration that is fit and proper, as well as convenient, than he or she who has had no connection with its construction. The tools that are used will produce naturally their own conventions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Paper and Cardboard Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Paper and Cardboard Construction Classic Reprint written by George Fred Buxton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paper and Cardboard Construction It is also planned to be of service to supervisors Of primary handwork as a suggestion for the organization of a course Of study and as a collection Of supplementary problems suitable for the lower grades. The notes at the back Of the book may be of considerable value in saving time looking up minor details. Art supervisors who handle paper and cardboard construction may find the book problems suggestive as a basis for decorative and illustrative treatment. Problems have been selected which are suited to the grades indicated and have been carefully tested by grade teachers in the Menomonie public schools for several years. The point Of view thruout the course has been that Of an emphasis upon the simple processes involved in typical uses Of paper and cardboard in the industries, making such modifications as are required to meet the abilities Of young children, and to eliminate all ap paratus used in duplicate work in such industries. The attempt is made to involve a rational sequence of difficulty in each kind Of work undertaken and to encourage careful work from the start. Altho the production of good pieces Of work is made prominent in the course, teachers may choose to use certain of the problems for illustrative purposes in connection with other subjects. In any case, the primary handwork Should be so handled that the entire school program will become unified for the benefit Of the pupil and not stereotyped for the benefit Of a logical course. I have kept track of the things most generally needed and have taken into account the helps for which they have written me requests during the school year. Solu tions of these problems I have endeavored to write in a simple, definite, practical way. I present these to the teaching public as methods which are true and tried, and which have proven of great value to me and also to those who have been under my instructions. The general rules and the program of handwork will be valuable to teachers of any grade. I have made actual and practical use of them in many kinds of work, rang ing from kindergarten through all the grades, and some have been applied even in normal school classes.
