This volume examines some of the social changes which have led to this development, among them the passing of the two World Wars from survivor into cultural memory. Download or read book Subversive Institutions written by Valerie Bunce and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1989 to 1992, all of the socialist dictatorships in Europe (including the Soviet Union) collapsed, as did the Soviet bloc. Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia dismembered, and the Cold War international order came to an abrupt end. Based on a series of controlled comparisons among regimes and states, Valerie Bunce argues in this book that two factors account for these remarkable developments: the institutional design of socialism as a regime, a state, and a bloc, and the rapid expansion during the 1980s of opportunities for domestic and international change. When combined, institutions and opportunities explain not just when, how, and why these regimes and states disintegrated, but also some of the most puzzling features of these developments - why, for example, the collapse of socialism was largely peaceful and why Yugoslavia, but not the Soviet Union or Czechoslovakia, disintegrated through war.

Book A General Theory of Love

Download or read book A General Theory of Love written by Thomas Lewis and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and lucid account of the complexities of love and its essential role in human well-being draws on the latest scientific research. Three eminent psychiatrists tackle the difficult task of reconciling what artists and thinkers have known for thousands of years about the human heart with what has only recently been learned about the primitive functions of the human brain. A General Theory of Love demonstrates that our nervous systems are not self-contained: from earliest childhood, our brains actually link with those of the people close to us, in a silent rhythm that alters the very structure of our brains, establishes life-long emotional patterns, and makes us, in large part, who we are. Explaining how relationships function, how parents shape their child’s developing self, how psychotherapy really works, and how our society dangerously flouts essential emotional laws, this is a work of rare passion and eloquence that will forever change the way you think about human intimacy.

Book Donald Davidson

Download or read book Donald Davidson written by Simon Evnine and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Davidson is unquestionably one of America's greatest living philosophers. His influence on Anglo-American philosophy over the last twenty years has been enormous, and his work is an unavoidable reference point in current debates in the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind. This book offers a systematic and accessible introduction to Davidson's work. Evnine begins by discussing Davidson's contribution to the philosophy of mind, including his views on action, events and causation. He then examines Davidson's work in the philosophy of language. The link between meaning and truth, radical interpretation, and semantic holism are considered in detail. The final chapters deal with the metaphysical aspects of Davidson's work and seek to assess his philosophical project as a whole.

Book Black Soul

  • Author : Ahmet M. Rahmanović
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2010-02-01
  • ISBN : 9781450040655
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Black Soul written by Ahmet M. Rahmanović and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the book: "The best novel published about the Bosnian tragedy..." - Academic, Tvrtko Kulenovic After fifty years, genocide in Europe again. This time live, 24/7 coverage of the extermination of a nation. The author, Ahmet M. Rahmanovic, pens a fictional novel based on the true events of Bosnia´s darkest period in "Black Soul", a new book release through Xlibris. This book, unlike any others, gives a face to all the actors in the Bosnian tragedy. In gripping war-action thriller, Rahmanovic takes readers from the battle-torn hills of Sarajevo to the streets of Chicago, where one man journeys to find new meaning in his life. Can he escape the horrors of memory in a foreign land, or will it continue to haunt him? "It is a story of love and war, of tenderness and brutality. The author tells a raw, often brutal story of unorthodox aggression, the likes of which are unprecedented in the history of war. The reader will find madness, insanity, blood, the hypocrisy of world powers ..." - Mugdim Karabeg, Journalist. But beneath the story, Rahmanovic presents us with a subtle account of the Bosnian Muslims, their outlook on life, justice, dignity, and honor. Most of all, this novel gives hope of building bridges between people, and shows how little good will is needed to turn the differences of religion, culture and race from an obstacle to a strength. Since its initial release in Bosnia, Black Soul has enjoyed a consistent ranking on the best seller list. More about the book and the author at www.blacksoul.us
