Book Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh

Download or read book Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh written by Mary Ann Knochel and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-04-18 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formally established in 1843, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh traces its history back to April 1754, when the first Eucharistic Liturgy was celebrated within what is now Pittsburgh. Franciscan friar Denys Baron established the first Catholic house of worship in this part of the world and dedicated it in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He constructed his small parish at the forks of the Ohio River, and from his meticulous records of baptisms, births, and deaths, there is evidence that he ministered not only to the soldiers of Fort Duquesne, but to people of Native American, Irish, and English descent as well. Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh illustrates how the seeds planted by this first humble faith community grew a rich Catholic tradition nurtured by migrs from myriad European countries, who brought with them traditions and an unwavering faith that has enriched the southwestern area of Pennsylvania for more than 250 years.

Book A Progressive Voice in the Catholic Church in the United States

Download or read book A Progressive Voice in the Catholic Church in the United States written by Arthur J. McDonald and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1966, one year after the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, a group of nineteen Roman Catholic priests met clandestinely in a church hall in a suburb of Pittsburgh to discuss forming an independent group of ordained clergy. Fearful that meeting publicly might be viewed as a threat to the authority of the local bishop, thus potentially risking sanctioning from him, they used numbers, not names, when circulating the minutes of the first two meetings. Once the word spread among the local clergy that such a group was meeting, and they realized there was widespread interest, they went public and invited all of Pittsburgh’s Catholic clergy, including the bishop, to their third meeting. They chose a name, the Association of Pittsburgh Priests (APP), and the group was launched. Shortly after forming, and with interest from among over two-hundred clergy, APP began advocating for major church renewal and involvement in any number of social justice issues. Regarding church renewal, they grounded themselves in the documents of Vatican II, most especially Gaudium et Spes, Church in the Modern World, and soon lobbied for optional celibacy and married priesthood, women’s ordination, lay empowerment, including the promotion of the early church notion of the priesthood and prophethood of all believers. To this day, APP remains a force for change in the church and in society, ever true to its initial intuition to fully implement the renewal of church and society called for by the bishops at Vatican II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Success lets me and everybody else know that I’m important — that I’m worth loving. Success is how I prove my worth in this world.” That’s what Mark Joseph thought. He was driven to achieve, and he did. Through his success, he felt loved and respected. He worked night and day to keep feeling important. But success came at a price. If you’re overwhelmed, unfulfilled, and running in circles chasing happiness, this is the book for you. You’ll learn, as Mark did, that the overwhelming pursuit of success stems from our underlying belief that we need to earn love, and that striving for it will somehow cure our lack of self-love. He’ll show you, through his experiences and those of others, that fulfillment has nothing to do with success. It comes from knowing that – despite success or failure – you were created by God for greatness, for love and to be loved. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mark Joseph is the executive director of the Christian Outreach Office at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. He and his team share the love of Christ with tens of thousands of people every year. He blogs, speaks, and helps men and women who feel overwhelmed by life’s struggles to understand that they are made for greatness.
