Thérèse d’Avila a su communiquer tout le travail de Dieu en elle, notamment dans son maître livre, Le Château intérieur ou Livre des Demeures. L’auteur, lui-même disciple de Thérèse d’Avila et de Jean de la Croix, nous conduit à travers les étapes de la grande spiritualité du Carmel, pour être unis à Dieu. Se ressourcer et apprendre pendant quinze jours en compagnie d'un maître spirituel. EXTRAIT Cependant, s’il plaît à Dieu de nous introduire dans la contemplation surnaturelle et, cette fois, de nous faire prier, agir en quelque sorte à sa manière à Lui, ou du moins d’une façon qui porte sa marque, les choses vont se passer différemment. Saint Jean de la Croix décrit les effets de cette adaptation comme une sorte de vide que l’âme ressent dans la prière. C’est la « nuit passive du sens », dont il donne les signes, après en avoir expliqué la nécessité. Thérèse, quant à elle, ne sait que témoigner de ce qui lui est arrivé. Et voilà pourquoi elle nous décrit certains effets que l’âme ressent et qui portent manifestement la marque de la manière divine selon laquelle, pourrait-on dire, l’être humain se met à fonctionner. Elle nous parle donc de ces gustos, ces joies que Dieu nous procure et qui montent du plus profond de l’être « pour finir par tout inonder ». Chacun sa manière : il est piquant de constater que là où saint Ignace parle en deux lignes assez énigmatiques de la « consolation sans cause » (Règle 330), Thérèse met plusieurs pages à développer la comparaison des deux bassins ! Elle va nous décrire aussi l’oraison de quiétude et cette variante qu’on appelle oraison de recueillement surnaturel. Theoriginal publication of this study, deriving from Juliet Barker's PhD thesis supervised by Maurice Keen, reestablished the importance of the tournament at the heart of medieval chivalric culture. The first serious scholarly publication for over half a century, it dramatically reawakened interest in the historical context of tournaments, and is especially valuable for its detailed evidence on the early years. Tournaments are shown as far more than just sport. They had wide political, social and military implications; in England their potential as a political instrument was quickly realised: for the disaffected they became a means of rebellion and feuding, but for the king and court they were a powerful propaganda machine. Participation in tournaments was also a way to earn a coveted reputation for chivalry; the passion for tourneying could bring knights lasting fame. Military demands accounted for the increasing sophistication of armour and weapons, partly in response to the demands of the tourneyers, who needed military training that reflected their role in actual combat. This wide-ranging study looks at the tournament fromall these angles, and in so doing produces an exemplary history of the first three hundred years of their development.
