Download or read book Pride in the Past Faith in the Future written by The University Club of Winter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial published history of the University Club of Winter Park was recorded in the book The First Twenty-Five Years (1959), which was later incorporated into another book, Sixty Years in Review (1994). Thus, the complete history of the Club from 1934 to 1994 was compiled in these two books. They are in the Club Library. The ad hoc History Book Committees task of writing this latest history was to preserve the past history, to research noteworthy material in the archives and files and Board minutes from 1994 to 2010, and to integrate new information into the format of Sixty Years in Review. There is no single author of this book. It is the result of the written contributions of the committee members, based on Board minutes and other research, and anecdotal reminiscences by Club Presidents Emeriti.

Book Coventry Cathedral of Peace

Download or read book Coventry Cathedral of Peace written by Kenyon Wright and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1940, when Hitlers bombers reduced Coventrys ancient cathedral to ruins, he coined a new word. He threatened to coventrate all of Britain. Coventry thus was given an iconic status as a symbol of the triumph of good over evil, of forgiveness over revenge, of reconciliation and peace over division and conflict. The ruins are still there today as a warning, but the new and magnificent new cathedral has become the powerhouse of a ministry both to the city and to international conflicts. The book is in three parts. Part 1 is a series of dramatic and moving stories of that outreach, from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Part 2 describes the history of how the cathedral came to be such a unique and active symbol of renewal and peace. Part 3 asks what lessons are to be learned from that story for a world in greater danger and with deeper divisions than ever. Finally, the author, from his long experience of international reconciliation, defines the steps that are essential if the old wounds of history are really to be healed.

Download or read book Women of Faith written by Mary Beth Fraser Connolly and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Sisters of Mercy lost their foundress Sister Catherine McAuley in 1841, stories of Mother Catherine passed from one generation of sisters to the next. McAuley’s Rule and Constitutions along with her spiritual writings and correspondence communicated the Mercys’ founding charism. Each generation of Sisters of Mercy who succeeded her took these words and her spirit with them as they established new communities or foundations across the United States and around the world. In Women of Faith, Mary Beth Fraser Connolly traces the paths of the women who dedicated their lives to the Sisters of Mercy Chicago Regional Community, the first Congregation of Catholic Sisters in Chicago. More than the story of the institutions that defined the territory and ministries of the women of this Midwestern region, Women of Faith presents a history of the women who made this regional community, whether as foundresses of individual communities in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries or as the teachers, nurses, and pastoral ministers who cared for and educated generations of Midwestern American Catholics. Though they had no immediate connection with McAuley, these women inherited her spirit and vision for religious life. Focusing on how the Chicago Mercys formed a community, lived their spiritual lives, and served within the institutional Catholic Church, this three-part perspective addresses community, spirituality, and ministry, providing a means by which we can trace the evolution of these women of faith as the world around them changed. The first part of this study focuses on the origins of the Sisters of Mercy in the Midwest from the founding of the Chicago South Side community in 1846 through the amalgamation and creation of the Chicago Province in 1929. The second part examines how the Mercys came together as one province through the changes of Vatican II from 1929 to the 1980s. Part III examines life after the dramatic changes of Vatican II in the 1990s and 2000s. Presenting rich examples of how faith cannot be separated from identity, Women of Faith provides an important new contribution to the scholarship that is shaping our collective understanding of women religious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In selecting Margaret Walker as the recipient of the Yale Series of Younger Poets in 1942—making her the first African American to receive this national literary award—Stephen Vincent Benét proclaimed hers a vibrant new voice, finding in her collection For My People “a controlled intensity of emotion and a language that, at times, even when it is most modern, has something of a surge of biblical poetry.” Today, more than seventy years later, Walker’s voice still resonates with particular power. Addressing the literature and culture of black America, This Is My Century, first published in 1989, marked a significant contribution to American poetry, bringing together Walker’s selection of one hundred of her own poems. On the eve of the centennial of Walker’s birth, the University of Georgia Press is proud to reissue this classic of American letters. In addition to her award-winning debut collection, the volume includes Prophets for a New Day (1970), a celebration of the civil rights movement; October Journey (1973), a collection of autobiographical and dedicatory poems; and thirty-seven previously uncollected poems.

Book Fields Watered with Blood

Download or read book Fields Watered with Blood written by Margaret Walker and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing an international gathering of scholars, Fields Watered with Blood constitutes the first critical assessment of the full scope of Margaret Walker’s literary career. As they discuss Walker’s work, including the landmark poetry collection For My People and the novel Jubilee, the contributors reveal the complex interplay of concerns and themes in Walker’s writing: folklore and prophecy, place and space, history and politics, gender and race. In addition, the contributors remark on how Walker’s emphases on spirituality and on dignity in her daily life make themselves felt in her writings and show how Walker’s accomplishments as a scholar, teacher, activist, mother, and family elder influenced what and how she wrote. A brief biography, an interview with literary critic Claudia Tate, a chronology of major events in Walker’s life, and a selected bibliography round out this collection, which will do much to further our understanding of the writer whom poet Nikki Giovanni once called “the most famous person nobody knows.”
