Book excerpt: "In recent years, the number of large, geographically diversified banking organizations operating in the U.S. has grown. Empirical studies have found that, at least in the case of deposit interest rates, many of these banks offer the same rate for a given type of account throughout a state, or, in some cases, a broader geographical area. This phenomenon of uniform pricing raises questions as to what competitive factors are relevant in explaining the deposit interest rates offered by large multimarket banks. In this paper, we provide empirical evidence regarding the determinants of the deposit interest rates offered by these banking organizations"--Abstract.

Book Retail Deposit Pricing and Interest Rate Risk

Download or read book Retail Deposit Pricing and Interest Rate Risk written by David E. Hutchison and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retail or consumer deposit pricing has only recently been fully deregulated. Subsequently, there has been little academic work done on the pricing of such deposits or the interest rate risk posed by such deposit balances. In this thesis we address the pricing of retail deposits in a dynamic, general equilibrium framework in order to draw conclusion regarding the important time series relationship between deposit and competitive market interest rates. Subsequently, we use this work as the theoretical basis for the construction of appropriate interest rate risk measurement methodologies in such retail deposit markets. We employ our methodology to measure interest rate risk in instantaneous maturity markets, markets for MMDA and NOW accounts, for example, and in discreet maturity markets such as those for consumer CDs. The novelty in our approach is the recognition that retail deposit rates are not determined in perfectly competitive markets whereas traditional interest rate risk or duration analyses implicitly assume that markets are perfectly competitive. We derive a methodology that measures the value of monopoly (quasi) rent streams, which is the "going concern" value of the bank attributable to activities in deposit markets. Our methodology leads to natural measures of the interest rate risk inherent in the bank's economic value that can be attributed to retail deposit market access.

Book Pricing Bank Services

Download or read book Pricing Bank Services written by John W. Perdue and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for increased profitability caused First National Bank to analyze its service charge structure. The bank shopped its competition for their service charges and repriced its accounts using industry reports on bank costs. The new service fee schedule was announced to its customers by a direct mail piece two and a half months prior to the change. Concurrently, a training program for bank employees was conducted in order for them to answer all customer questions about the change. As a result of repricing, the bank lost only 28 out of 8,000 accounts and had an income increase of $169,781.58 for 1979.

Book Price Management in Financial Services

Download or read book Price Management in Financial Services written by Georg Wuebker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial services industry is undergoing a period of dramatic change. Deregulation has created an ultra-competitive marketplace and recent challenges like the worldwide subprime crisis, SEPA and Basel II have only intensified the need for financial services providers to shift their focus to customer centric Smart Profit GrowthTM strategies. Price Management in Financial Services shows how to utilize the modern techniques of value-based pricing to design professional pricing processes that go beyond the industry's current norm of purely risk and cost based pricing. The authors provide insight into strategic pricing concepts such as market segmentation, product bundling, multi-channel pricing and non-linear pricing and give an overview of advanced price optimization methods. The book serves as a step-by-step guide to long term profitable growth through professional pricing by familiarizing the reader with the concepts of price-response function management and price elasticity of demand. The book also includes a number of implementation strategies to incorporate Power Pricing into financial services institutions and includes a large number of Simon-Kucher & Partners' international case studies that illustrate the enormous profit potential that lies in professional pricing.

Book Estimating the Interest Rate Sensitivity of Liquid Retail Deposit Values

Download or read book Estimating the Interest Rate Sensitivity of Liquid Retail Deposit Values written by James M. O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most difficult issues in the measurement of bank interest rate risk is the interest rate risk of liquid retail deposits. In this study, estimates are developed for the interest rate sensitivity of the value of interest-bearing checkable deposits (OCDs) and savings deposits defined to include MMDAs and other savings accounts. These interest rate sensitivities are measured by the percentage change in the value of the deposit liability due to a change in market interest rates which, for a permant rate shock and hence parallel yield curve shift, represent the deposit's quot;duration.quot; The value of the deposit liability is equal to the deposit balance net of the present value of economic profits earned on the liability. Because deposit rates adjust upward to market rates more slowly than downward, the interest rate sensitivity of the economic profits from liquid deposit accounts tends to be greater when deposit rates are rising than when they are falling. As a consequence, durations tend to be relatively large when deposit rates are moving up and small when deposit rates are moving down. Durations are estimated for permanent shocks to market rates for aggregated deposit categories and for individual banks. The consequences for deposit interest rate sensitivities are further examined for stochastic, mean-reverting market rates and nonparellel yield curve shifts.
