Book excerpt: "The girl is simply too good-looking," said Bunner, the office manager, in a high, complaining voice. "She is industrious, intelligent, punctual, and well-mannered, but simply too good-looking—a disturbing element in the office on account of her appearance. I made a grave mistake in engaging her." The president, who had been a professor of botany at a great university before he resigned in order to become head of The Universal Encyclopedia of Necessary Knowledge Publishing Corporation, was a trifle deaf, but had not as yet admitted the fact to himself; and he inquired with the patient, slightly contemptuous surprise of the deaf, "But I do not understand why she is crying." "It is not she who is crying," answered the office manager regretfully; "it is Mr. Rixon, our third vice president. He is crying because he has most, unfortunately, become interested in the young woman—fallen in love with her—so my stenographer tells me."

Book excerpt: While the Bible has been documented to be the most-published and most-sold book ever, how many people actually take the time to open, read, and study this precious gift? If we truly believe this Book is from God Himself and contains the Way of salvation, shouldn't we cherish It as the most valuable treasure we could possibly possess? With the help of the Holy Spirit, shouldn't our lives reflect the passion of these priceless Words? My granddaughter likes to wear a necklace to church, so I gave her a necklace of pearls that my wonderful son-in-law had given me upon returning from the Philippines on business. I explained to her that one day this necklace of pearls would belong to her, making them very special because they came from her Daddy. This book contains a few of the verses I love to ponder, share, and cherish. They are Pearls that my Heavenly Father gave to me, to you, and to the entire world as a message of His love and forgiveness. I want to share several of these priceless Pearls and share what each means in my life hoping to encourage you to develop your own string of Pearls. May a true passion inspire each of us not only to collect these Pearls but also to share them with the people in our lives who are in need of help and healing. By the power of the Holy Spirit, may our string of Pearls grow into a necklace of Pearls that will sustain our faith now and throughout eternity. By the grace of God, may we pass on this priceless necklace of Pearls to future generations that they may hold God's love letters, the Bible, close to their heart resting secure in His promises now and throughout eternity.

Book The Pearl Frontier

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Martínez
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2015-05-31
  • ISBN : 0824854829
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book The Pearl Frontier written by Julia Martínez and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable for its meticulous archival research and moving life stories, The Pearl Frontier offers a new way of imagining Australian historical connections with Indonesia. This compelling view from below of maritime mobility demonstrates how, in the colonial quest for the valuable pearl-shell, Australians came to rely on the skill and labor of Indonesian islanders, drawing them into their northern pearling trade empire. From the 1860s onward the pearl-shell industry developed alongside British colonial conquests across Australia's northern coast and prompted the Dutch to consolidate their hold over the Netherlands East Indies. Inspired by tales of pirates and priceless pearls, the pearl frontier witnessed the maritime equivalent of a gold rush; with traders, entrepreneurs, and willing workers coming from across the globe. But like so many other frontier zones it soon became notorious for its reliance on slave-like conditions for Indigenous and Indonesian workers. These allegations prompted the imposition of a strict regime of indentured labor migration that was to last for almost a century before giving way to international criticism in the era of decolonization. The Pearl Frontier invites the reader to step outside the narrow confines of national boundaries, to see seafaring peoples as a continuous population, moving and in communication in spite of the obstacles of politics, warfare, and language. Instead of the mythologies of racial purity, propagated by settler colonies and European empires, this book dissects the social and economic life of the port cities around the Australian-Indonesian maritime zone and lays open the complex, cosmopolitan relationships which shaped their histories and their present situations. Julia Martínez and Adrian Vickers bring together their expertise on Australian and Indonesian history to challenge the isolationist view of Australia's past. This book explores how Asian migration and the struggle against the restrictive White Australia policy left a rich legacy of mixed Asian-Indigenous heritage that lives on along Australia's northern coastline. This book is an important contribution to studies of the coastal, or Pasisir, culture of Southeast Asia, that situates the local cultures in a regional context and demonstrates how Indonesian maritime peoples became part of global migration flows as indentured laborers. It offers a hitherto untold story of Indonesian diaspora in Australia and reveals a degree of Indian-Pacific interconnectedness that forces us to rethink the construction of regional boundaries and national borders.

Book Pearl A New Verse Translation

Download or read book Pearl A New Verse Translation written by and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation From the acclaimed translator of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a spellbinding new translation of this classic allegory of grief and consolation. One of our most ingenious interpreters of Middle English, Oxford Professor of Poetry Simon Armitage is celebrated for his “compulsively readable” translations (New York Times Book Review). A perfect complement to his historic translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl reanimates another beloved Medieval English masterpiece thought to be by the same anonymous author and housed in the same original fourteenth-century manuscript. Honoring the rhythms and alliterative music of the original, Armitage’s virtuosic translation describes a man mourning the loss of his Pearl—something that has “slipped away.” What follows is a tense, fascinating, and tender dialogue weaving through the throes of grief toward divine redemption. Intricate and endlessly connected, Armitage’s lyrical translation is a circular and perfected whole, much like the pearl itself.

Book Speaking of Animals

  • Author : Robert Palmatier
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

Download or read book Speaking of Animals written by Robert Palmatier and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-04-30 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.

Book excerpt: Freedoms Song is both an expanded translation and a one-of-a-kind interpretation of the life of Jesus. It is a fresh portrait of him based on primary source documents, namely, the four gospels of the Christian scriptures. In this story, these documents are harmonized and arranged into a highly probable chronological narrative. To add depth and flavor, and bring about a greater understanding of Jesus discourses, illustrations, homilies, and deeds, cultural and political beliefs and practices of the first-century are incorporated into the book. The Prologue opens with a celestial sign that appeared to Magi priests about fifteen months before Jesus was born. This is followed with a discussion of his pedigree and his person. Part I covers the Inauguration of Freedom, from Jesus unique birth to his first Passover in Jerusalem as a youth. It then jumps forward eighteen years to his baptism, personal testing as Gods Liberator, recruitment of his first six disciples, and, finally, his first power deed. Part II focuses on the Battle for Freedom. It covers approximately two years of Jesus ministryhis tour of Galilee with the gospel, identification of himself as the God-man, sermon about Gods kingdom, dispatching apostles to spread the good news, teaching by parables, visiting Jerusalem, and his warning to the religious leaders of his day. Part III includes Freedoms Victory, coincidentally the denouement of Jesus life. He is back in Jerusalem for another Passover and a final gathering with the apostles. And here he is arrested, tried, and crucified as a common criminal. The story ends with Freedoms SongJesus is alive!
