This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Descriptive Price-List for Fall of 1897 and Spring of 1898: Of the Fruit, Ornamental Trees, Vines, Plants, Etc Sons - The soil for all sorts of fruit trees must be dry naturally. They will not flourish in wet land. Deep tile drainage has not proven satisfactory with us, trees being more subject to disease, and are short-lived. Rich land is preferable, but our success on very poor land has been quite satisfactory. We like a gravelly or clay soil, but neither is indispensable. Location - High, dry, and airy locations are best, as trees are less apt to winter-kill or blight, and are more apt to escape spring frost than on low land. Time TO plant - Transplanting may be done at any time when the ground is in working order, from the cessation of growth in fall until the buds have opened in the spring; but we much prefer fall or early winter planting for the following reasons The earth will become well settled about the roots, cut surfaces will heal over and new rootlets will be thrown out in the soil, ready to start the buds at the first impulse of nature in spring Yet we have been quite successful with spring planting, but the trees do not make quite as much growth the first season. Treatment ON arrival - Take them to the land you wish to plant, open a trench two feet wide and a foot or more deep, untie the bundle, take one tree at a time and stand them as quickly as possible in the trench, and then throw in fine, moist earth among them until the roots are covered a foot or more. When plant ing only take out a few at a time. If desired, they can remain in trenches in good condition until spring. Should they be dry or shrivelled from exposure, immerse the whole tree in water for twenty-four hours, and if in a frozen condition put them in a cool, dark place (free from frost), and allow them to thaw before h'eeling in or planting out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree, Shrub and Fruit: Autumn, 1911-Spring, 1912 Seeds of deciduous trees and shrubs are best sown in the Fall, pines and similar evergreens in Spring, but deciduous ones will grow very well sown in Spring if kept in good condi tion through the Winter. When sown in Spring seeds of a hard, bony nature, such as the yellow locust, are best soaked in hot water for a day or two and then sown at once. Seeds of maples, ash, magnolia, beech, all nut trees, as well as many other kinds, require to be kept slightly moist over Winter if not sown in Fall; on the other hand, catalpa and some others may be kept quite dry until Spring comes. All Spring sowing should be early; even if the ground freezes later it won't injure the seeds at all. Junipers, hollies and a few similar seeds remain a full year before sprouting. It is just as well, therefore, to keep them in a box of 'soil. Until the next Autumn, then sow them. These directions should-insure tolerable success in rais ing seedlings. The greater the experience, of course, the greater the success. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree, Shrub and Fruit Seeds: Autumn, 1915 Spring, 1916 We cover the largest seed growing districts in the world, and with our experienced collectors, we are in a position to furnish you the best quality of seeds in the largest of varieties and quantities at the most reasonable prices. We do our best to send out sound and perfect seeds, but in the case of oaks, hickories and chestnuts the seeds are sometimes wormy, a defect that cannot be detected until the worm eats its way out, often after the seeds leave our hands. There are trees, too, that never perfect all their seeds - the Acer saccharum and Liriodendron are examples - and there is no way to separate the imperfect seeds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

This book was released on 1995-08-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
