Book excerpt: They said the world was going to end on December 21, 2012. It didn't. But that was the day it started. On that day webarmor was invented: spider web fibers bonded together, sewn and worn like regular clothes, yet capable of stopping a bullet. In the aftermath of the Breaking, corporations rule and enforce that rule with their private security forces, the exclusive users of webarmor. People can work for the corporations by living in their Enclaves and by their rules - or fend for themselves in the Outerlands. Randal, inventor of webarmor, escaped the corporation's reach after the Breaking, but lives his life on the run. He is pursued by Hunters, elite assassins sponsored by the corporations to silence dissent and quash opposition. Driven together by chance and circumstance, Randal finds himself together with two Hunters as they try to survive as Prey in the Outerlands.

As a result, his youngest has been trying to hold things together with the council of wolves and Rift’s return sparks a controversy which ends with his arrest and subsequent trial. As Rift stands to defend himself, Raskin risks his life and makes a historic appearance in the middle of wolf territory. There, Firebane and the others are lured into a trap and captured by none other than Guntharr who is now under the control of an evil enchantress. Book Byzantium and Bulgaria 775 831

Download or read book Byzantium and Bulgaria 775 831 written by Panos Sophoulis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative survey of Byzantium's relations with pre-Christian Bulgaria in the late eighth and early ninth century offers an entirely new framework for understanding the developments that shaped one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the early Medieval Balkans. Unlike previous studies, it integrates the surviving literary sources with the ever-growing archaeological record to construct a comprehensive narrative account of the Byzantine-Bulgar conflict for political mastery in the region. Moreover, the analysis of the changing socio-political structures of Bulgaria provides a basis for understanding its transformation from a loose tribal confederation into a stable monarchy. While this is primarily a regional study, focusing on the territories and peoples controlled by the two competing powers, it is also of interest to students of the Frankish, Arab and steppe-nomad worlds, since the relations between Byzantium and Bulgaria are put into a wider international context.

And then he/she succeeded in committing the one illegal act—and was thrown out of heaven forever. But forever is not a term any native of that robotic utopia understood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the long exile on Earth, John Carter finally returned to his beloved Mars. But beautiful Dejah Thoris, the woman he loved, had vanished. Now he was trapped in the legendary Eden of Mars -- an Eden from which none ever escaped alive. The Gods of Mars is a science fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the second of his Barsoom series. It was first published in The All-Story as a five-part serial in the issues for January-May 1913.[1] It was later published as a complete novel by A. C. McClurg in September, 1918. Excerpt: For moments after that awful laugh had ceased reverberating through the rocky room, Tars Tarkas and I stood in tense and expectant silence. But no further sound broke the stillness, nor within the range of our vision did aught move.At length Tars Tarkas laughed softly, after the manner of his strange kind when in the presence of the horrible or terrifying. It is not an hysterical laugh, but rather the genuine expression of the pleasure they derive from the things that move Earth men to loathing or to tears.Often and again have I seen them roll upon the ground in mad fits of uncontrollable mirth when witnessing the death agonies of women and little children beneath the torture of that hellish green Martian fete-the Great Games. I looked up at the Thark, a smile upon my own lips, for here in truth was greater need for a smiling face than a trembling chin.

Book The Philosophy of Science Fiction Film

Download or read book The Philosophy of Science Fiction Film written by Steven Sanders and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science fiction genre maintains a remarkable hold on the imagination and enthusiasm of the filmgoing public, captivating large audiences worldwide and garnering ever-larger profits. Science fiction films entertain the possibility of time travel and extraterrestrial visitation and imaginatively transport us to worlds transformed by modern science and technology. They also provide a medium through which questions about personal identity, moral agency, artificial consciousness, and other categories of experience can be addressed. In The Philosophy of Science Fiction Film, distinguished authors explore the storylines, conflicts, and themes of fifteen science fiction film classics, from Metropolis to The Matrix. Editor Steven M. Sanders and a group of outstanding scholars in philosophy, film studies, and other fields raise science fiction film criticism to a new level by penetrating the surface of the films to expose the underlying philosophical arguments, ethical perspectives, and metaphysical views. Sanders's introduction presents an overview and evaluation of each essay and poses questions for readers to consider as they think about the films under discussion. The first section, "Enigmas of Identity and Agency," deals with the nature of humanity as it is portrayed in Blade Runner, Dark City, Frankenstein, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Total Recall. In the second section, "Extraterrestrial Visitation, Time Travel, and Artificial Intelligence," contributors discuss 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Terminator, 12 Monkeys, and The Day the Earth Stood Still and analyze the challenges of artificial intelligence, the paradoxes of time travel, and the ethics of war. The final section, "Brave Newer World: Science Fiction Futurism," looks at visions of the future in Metropolis, The Matrix, Alphaville, and screen adaptations of George Orwell's 1984.
