Williamson County was formed in 1799 from Davidson County, and until 1804 it extended to the Alabama line. Later counties cut out of this original Williamson County were: Bedford, Lincoln, Marshall, Maury, Rutherford, and Giles. This book contains over 5,000 marriages. All of which were copied from the original bonds and licenses. During this time frame, various factors such as: bad roads, long distances from court house, and weather would cause clergymen or justices of the peace who performed the ceremonies not to record the rites solemnized by them. Hence, we often find the bond but not the return by the official.

The books were microfilmed by the Tennessee State Library and Archives as Stewart County Microfilm Rolls #29, #30, #31 and #32.The 1881-1883 marriage records were the most informative for genealogists in the history of the county, including the following data for each couple: -Names, ages, birthplaces and residences of the bride and groom-Date the marriage license was issued-Date the marriage was solemnized-Location within the county where the marriage took place-Occupation of the groom-Name of the marriage celebrant (person who solemnized the marriage)-Names of the witnesses to the marriageStewart County marriage records have never included the names of the parents of the bride and groom - a hopeful yet common misconception. A few of the marriage entries from the 1893-1910 period, however, include a permission slip signed by one or both of the bride's parents, since permission was required when the bride was under 16 years of age.The 1893-1910 records also include the name of the groom's bondsman on the marriage bond. Due to the high dollar value on Tennessee marriage bonds - $1,250.00 - the bondsman was often a close friend, neighbor or kinsman of the groom, which can be a helpful genealogical clue.

Book excerpt: A few years ago Mrs. Kilgore discovered, hidden away in the Dickson County Courthouse in Charlotte, Tennessee, a large quantity of early marriage licenses, bonds and certificates. She set about transcribing and arranging this material, from the earliest record in 1817 through 1856. Her work was unusual in that she relied almost entirely on these original records, using the marriage books themselves (which started in 1838) as a check against these loose papers. Since there were numerous omissions and errors in these books, including the complete absence of several years of marriage books in the 1840s, her labor has yielded for the interested public a large quantity of information not previously available. This book sets forth, alphabetically first by groom and then by bride, the 1636 marriages Mrs. Kilgore has offered us. Not all the data she obtained is included; only the names of the principals plus date of license and, in parentheses, date of execution. Her worksheets, showing names of bondsmen, ministers and justices of the peace, are on file at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville. Alphabetical lists of those who officiated at marriages are included in the back of the book. The auathor used a combination of the earliest marriage books and loose bonds & licenses. Approximately 1,600 marriages arranged alphabetically by grooms and brides.

Robert moved the family to Dallas Texas in 1918. He died in 1940. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in England, Ireland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Florida, Kansas and Iowa.
