Book Understanding Soils in Urban Environments

Download or read book Understanding Soils in Urban Environments written by Pam Hazelton and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil properties such as water retention, salinity and acidity are not just issues for agriculture and forestry. They are equally as significant in creating environmental and structural problems for buildings and other engineering works. As an increasing proportion of the world's population is living in cities, and building and related infrastructure development continues, these problems assume ever-greater importance. In addition, existing works contribute to urban soil erosion and pollution as well as increased levels of urban runoff. Understanding Soils in Urban Environments explains how urban soils develop, change and erode. It describes their physical and chemical properties and focuses on specific soil problems, such as acid sulfate soils, that can cause environmental concern and also affect engineering works. It also addresses contemporary issues such as green roofs, urban green space and the man-made urban soils that plants may need to thrive in. It provides a concise introduction to all aspects of soils in urban environments and will be extremely useful to students in a wide range of disciplines, from soil science and urban forestry and horticulture, to planning, engineering, construction and land remediation, as well as to engineers, builders, landscape architects, ecologists, planners and developers.

Book Recent Advances in the Leaching of Sulphides and the Precipitation of Iron

Download or read book Recent Advances in the Leaching of Sulphides and the Precipitation of Iron written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in the leaching of sulphide concentrates and in the associated area of iron precipitation are examined. Sherritt Gordon's technology of pressure leaching with oxygen and sulphuric acid is being applied commercially to zinc concentrates. A Zn recovery of over 98 per cent is achieved, and the associated pyrite is largely unaffected; elemental sulphur is the principal sulphidic product. Leaching processes with ferric chloride or cupric chloride, or both, are being applied to a wide variety of sulphide concentrates. Duval's CLEAR cupric chloride leach process for copper concentrates has been evaluated at the demonstration-plant scale, and many other processes using FeCl3 or CuCl2, or both, for copper have been piloted. Several chloride leaching processes for lead or pyritic zinc concentrates have also been tested successfully at the pilot level. All the processes stress the advantages of the formation of elemental sulphur and the relative lack of pyrite attack. Equally important advances have been made in the elucidation of the fundamental leaching reactions involved. Technologies for the precipitation of jarosite, goethite, and hematite are being used routinely for the control of iron in both sulphate and chloride media, and efforts are currently being made to control metal losses (Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, etc.) associated with these precipitates. Although ongoing research has clarified many aspects of iron precipitation, it has yet to find large-tonnage uses for the various iron precipitates.

Download or read book Heavy Metals written by Wim Salomons and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Heavy Metals: Problems and Solutions" is divided into three sections dealing with basic geochemical processes, remediation and case studies. The basic geochemical processes are discussed with respect to mobility in the environment and impact as well as methods to derive guidelines for heavy metals. Remediation focuses on currently available methods to treat contaminated sediments and soils. In addition, it considers the concept of geochemical engineering for remediation of large areas contaminated by metals. A number of case studies of polluted sediments and soils and their environmental impact highlight the principles discussed in the first two sections.
