Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 48: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December, 1863 Bromide of Ammonium. - One of the best plans of treating h00ping cough is the administration of nitric acid in syrup, combined with topical application to the larynx of nitrate of silver. Lately bromide of ammonium has been introduced, and has been found of much use in some cases of the disease. For infants, two or three grains three times a day is a proper dose; for older children, from four to eight grains. The simpler the vehicle the better. (dr. G. D. Gibb, p. This may be done by giving bicarbonate of potash and infusion of quassia, and afterwards the sulphite of soda. The operation of this salt seems to be that the sulphite being decomposed in the stomach by the acids therein generated, sulphurous acid gas is liberated, the destructive effects of which upon parasitic formations like the sarcina is well known. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Census Bureau, in 2003 more than 43 million Americans lacked health insurance. Being uninsured is associated with a range of adverse health, social, and economic consequences for individuals and their families, for the health care systems in their communities, and for the nation as a whole. This report is the sixth and final report in a series by the Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance, intended to synthesize what is known about these consequences and communicate the extent and urgency of the issue to the public. Insuring America's Health recommends principles related to universality, continuity of coverage, affordability to individuals and society, and quality of care to guide health insurance reform. These principles are based on the evidence reviewed in the committee's previous five reports and on new analyses of past and present federal, state, and local efforts to reduce uninsurance. The report also demonstrates how those principles can be used to assess policy options. The committee does not recommend a specific coverage strategy. Rather, it shows how various approaches could extend coverage and achieve certain of the committee's principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Medicine, Vol. 46: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; July-December 1862 In bloodletting you are wielding a dangerous, but in some cases a necessary weapon. When it should be employed and when not, is one of the most important questions in clinical medicine. We must judge of the necessity for this treatment by the balance between the heart and the arteries. If the apex of the heart strikes strong, while the pulse at the wrist is defective, act free] y and confidently. If, on the contrary, the ventricles are weak while the pulse is full, large, and rap ping, be cautious what you do, and if you draw blood at all, let it be by cupping the chest. Remember that the pathology of the disease is a temporary death of a portion of the lungs, and that the action of bloodletting is purely mechanical Position is of great importance. When the elasticity of the vessels is lowered by disease, the blood gravitates towards the lowest part of the viscus. Let the patient, therefore, lie on the side Opposite to that affected, that thus gravitation may tend to withdraw the congestion from the weaker point. If both lungs are affected posteriorly, the patient may lie on the face for a time. Never give purgatives in pneumonia. A patient with constipated bowels will do better than one with the Opposite state. (dr. T. K. Chambers, p. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Military and Naval Surgery and Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 1: Being an Annual Retrospect Embracing the Experience of the Medical Officers of Her Majesty's Armies and Fleets in All Parts of the World; For the Year 1863 The object of this Work is to comprise in one portable volume a retrospective history of Military and Naval Medicine and Surgery during each year, carefully noting every fact and Opinion of importance, and thus fostering a useful esprit de corps and awaking and stimulating inquiry. The Annals will not interfere with any existing publi cation, but aims at filling an unoccupied place in our Medical Literature; for the Naval and Military Services have become, to a certain extent, a speciality of our profession, not only as respects many questions in Medicine and Surgery, but in the wide field of preventive medicine and the economy of Armies in camp and in garrison. Bearing on these important sub jects there is yearly published a mass of information which never meets the eye of officers serving on remote foreign sta tions, being scattered in bulky official papers, and in a variety of books and periodicals at home and abroad. To select, to abridge and arrange these valuable materials is the task which the Editor, during a period of sick leave, has undertaken, in the hope that the compilation will form an accessible storehouse of departmental investigation, useful to his professional brethren, and well worthy of the attention of the soldier, the sailor, and the statesman. Book Rose s Strategy of Preventive Medicine

Download or read book Rose s Strategy of Preventive Medicine written by Geoffrey Arthur Rose and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strategy of Preventive Medicine by Geoffrey Rose, first published in 1993, remains a key text for anyone involved in preventive medicine. Rose's insights into the inextricable relationship between ill health, or deviance, in individuals and populations they come from, have transformed our whole approach to strategies for improving health. His personal and unique book, based on many years research, sets out the case that the essential determinants of the health of society are to be found in its mass characteristics. The deviant minority can only be understood when seen in its societal context, and effective prevention requires changes which involve the population as a whole. He explores the options for prevention, considering them from various viewpoints - theoretical and scientific, sociological and political, practical and ethical. The applications of his ideas are illustrated by a variety of examples ranging from heart disease to alcoholism to road accidents. His pioneering work focused on a population wide approach to the prevention of common medical and behavioral disorders has become the classic text on the subject. This reissue brings the original text to a new generation involved in preventive medicine. Kay-Tee Khaw and Michael Marmot retain the original text intact, but have added their own perspective on the work. They examine what relevance Rose's ideas might have in the era of the human genome project and other major scientific advances, they consider examples of how the theory might be applied and generalised in medicine and beyond, and discuss what implications it holds for the future. There is also an explanation of the population perspective, clarifying the often confused thinking and arguments about determinants of individual cases and determinants of population incidence. Rose's Strategy of Preventive Medicine will ensure that this seminal work continues to be read by future generations.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
