Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulmonary thromboembolism in Japan is currently associated with a high mortality rate and remains a concern for patients and medical staff alike. Moreover, as the mechanisms of the condition have been elucidated, it has become clear that much work needs to be done in the field to achieve acceptable results in this country. Thus, Japan has regularly played host to the International Symposium on Pulmonary Thromboembolism . At the most recent symposium, in Sendai, the epidemiology and the treatment of pulmonary thromboembolism, traveler's thrombosis, and the prevention of deep vein thromboembolism were discussed, particularly with reference to the differences between Japan and Western countries. The fruits of the collaboration between that assembly of international specialists can be found in this collection of work. It provides an in-depth look at the current concepts that guide the treatment and prevention of the disease, and at the problem areas that must be improved upon.

Book Prevention And Management Of Venous Thromboembolism

Download or read book Prevention And Management Of Venous Thromboembolism written by Patrick Kesteven and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venous thrombosis occurs in all healthcare settings and all specialties in nursing and medicine. It causes more deaths every year than MRSA or road accidents and is not just a topic for experts and specialists. In spite of this, there is a lack of easily accessible information for non-experts on venous thromboembolism (VTE), and consequently the condition is often treated poorly and preventive measures are often used inconsistently. Prevention and Management of Venous Thromboembolism takes the first step towards rectifying this dearth of information. It bring together a unique group of vascular surgeons, haematologists and other experts who help shape the management of VTE and is aimed at both the multi-disciplinary teams involved in the day-to-day care of patients with VTE, and allied health professionals and healthcare commissioners. The book's approach is broad and comprehensive and there are separate sections dealing with prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This is an expert-level book accessible to non-experts.

Book Prevention of venous thromboembolism

Download or read book Prevention of venous thromboembolism written by Sics Editore and published by SICS Editore. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) may be asymptomatic in a patient confined to bed – pulmonary embolism (PE) may be the first symptom. Every hospital and clinic should have active management guidelines for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (DVT and PE). The prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) consists of early mobilisation, compression bandages or anti-embolism stockings, low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and warfarin if long-term prophylaxis is indicated. The following anticoagulants may be used in special cases: fondaparinux (patients at high-risk of VTE, heparin allergy), dabigatran, rivaroxaban or apixaban (oral agents for use after elective knee and hip replacement surgery). Rivaroxaban may also be used for secondary prevention of venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism in an uncomplicated patient. Idiopathic VTE (no identified risk factors) is three times more likely to recur than provoked VTE (risk factors present). Indefinite treatment is therefore often recommended after idiopathic VTE. If VTE develops without any provoking factors in a patient aged less than 50 years, tests for hereditary coagulation disorders are indicated to facilitate the choice of treatment duration (indefinite or temporary) . Aspirin is mainly used for the prevention of arterial occlusion, but there is accumulating evidence on aspirin and statins in preventing recurrence of venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism. A patient who has a previous history of VTE, or is otherwise predisposed to thrombus formation, must be given guidance regarding high risk situations.

Book Pediatric Venous Thromboembolism

Download or read book Pediatric Venous Thromboembolism written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurs less often in children than adults and therefore remains underrecognized despite increasing in incidence. Due to the risk of mortality, short- and long-term morbidity, and increased healthcare costs associated with pediatric VTE, this entity merits better understanding and consideration. With this Research Topic, we aim to highlight some special considerations of pediatric VTE, namely risk factors and epidemiology, rare types of pediatric thrombosis and considerations unique to specific clinical patient subgroups, approaches to management and treatment, and prevention.

Book Prevention of Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism

Download or read book Prevention of Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism written by J.G. Sharnoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prompted by recent advances in the safe prevention of thromboembolism by subcutaneous heparin prophy laxis, in particular postoperativt>ly. It has been correctly called by S. Sherry a major breakthrough in medicine. Although thrombo embolism was first recognized by Laennec in 1819 and defined by Virchow in 1846, its development was not well understood and its prevention escaped our best efforts until now. This all-too-com mon, sudden, unexpected and unwanted form of morbidity and mortality, always referred to in the surgical patient as postoper ative pulmonary thromboembolism, has now become the major complication of all surgery. However, it occurs with equal fre quency in hospitalized non-operative patients as well, so the latter are also in need of this prophylaxis if this calamity is to be avoided. The mass ofliterature generated in the past few years has produced some confusion as to which of a number of methods of heparin prophylaxis gives the best results. It is the intention of this book to help clarify the situation and thereby resolve the problem by offering a procedure of subcutaneous heparin prophylaxis which is acceptable, safe and simple to administer. Recent technical advances offer the hope of attaining this goal. 7 Acknowledgements I wish to acknowledge with thanks the assistance given me in preparing this book to Miss Viola Johnson, my former secretary, Mrs Mary Coan, the hospital librarian and Dr Alex Silverglade of Riker Laboratories, Inc. , USA.

Book Significance of Prophylactic Measures in the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism

Download or read book Significance of Prophylactic Measures in the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism written by Rosy Sony and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason for deaths in hospital are due to many reasons, in which venous thromboembolism (VTE) is accountable for 10% of deaths in United States (Crawley, 2008). Hardwick, Pulido, Colwell, (2011) identifies that there is a problem in assessing the high risk patients and providing effective measures to prevent or decrease the incidences of VTE during their hospital stay. By using adequate pharmacological and mechanical measures in addition with early ambulation proved to be effective in preventing and reducing the incidences of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in all surgical patients (Turnbull, 2007). Special consideration is needed for patients who are non-compliant and are at risk for bleeding. Implementing and evaluating an organized plan is important to provide research based evidences. Dissemination of evidences provided to the community and stakeholders can improve the completion of the plan with quality outcome. The review of the research is to increase the awareness of patients and staff by proposed plan and a positive outcome of the patients. Kurt Lewin's change theory was used in the plan to increase the strength and dependability of the proposal. The barriers of the current policy were identified and knowledge of patients and staff were assessed during the research study. Different tools were used to assess the understanding and compliance of patients and staff. Significant improvement was noted in the prevention of VTE by using the proposed plan which in turn improves the safety and quality of patient outcomes.

Book Nursing in Critical Care Setting

Download or read book Nursing in Critical Care Setting written by Irene Comisso and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides essential insights into how the approach to nursing care in ICU patients has markedly changed over recent years. It shows how the focus has progressively moved away from the technical approach that characterized early ICUs to a wider personalization of patient care that also highlights general problems such as basic hygiene and general comfort. It also demonstrates that, at the same time, the nurses' role has become more professionalized, with increasing competences in assessing and managing patients' problems and measuring related outcomes. It is structured in four units: Unit 1 presents the essential elements of accurate vital-function and basic-needs assessments for ICU patients, using both instrumental monitoring and specially validated assessment tools. Unit 2 addresses basic care in ICU patients, particularly hygiene and mobilization, reflecting recent developments in nursing that focus on the importance of these activities. Unit 3 highlights the main nursing outcomes in ICU patients, particularly focusing on risk prevention and complication management. Lastly, Unit 4 discusses advances in ICU nursing, from clinical, organizational and research perspectives.

Book Venous Thromboembolism in Advanced Disease

Download or read book Venous Thromboembolism in Advanced Disease written by Simon I R Noble and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing recognition of the burden of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with advanced incurable disease and the clinical, ethical, and philosophical challenges they may pose. With a growing elderly population and oncological therapies helping patients live longer with malignant disease, VTE is likely to be an ongoing problem. Whilst presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of VTE in general medicine is well established, its management within the palliative care setting is less clear-cut. Clinical presentation is often masked by other palliative symptoms, and symptoms can be consistent with those of other conditions; diagnosis is therefore underappreciated, and the condition can be difficult to manage. Bringing together contributions from international experts in the field of VTE and palliative care, this book explores the increasing challenges faced by healthcare professionals when managing VTE in advanced disease. Topics such as the epidemiology and pathogenesis of the condition are discussed. It appraises the current evidence informing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of VTE, with particular emphasis on its application to patients with incurable malignancy and non-malignant disease. Chapters are illustrated with key learning points and, where appropriate, case studies are presented to illustrate the decision-making processes that may occur when balancing the evidence with its impact on patient quality of life. This practical resource is invaluable for healthcare professionals working in all areas of medicine where patients with advanced cancer and non-malignant disease are cared for.

Download or read book Postoperative Thromboembolism written by David Bergqvist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of postoperative thromboembolic complications has increased enormously over the past 2 decades, particularly where diag nosis and prophylaxis are concerned. The 125 I-fibrinogen method of diagnosing thrombosis has completely changed our concept of the frequency, occurrence, and natural course of thrombosis, and it has formed the basis of most thromboprophylactic studies. Concurrently with the development of this diagnostic method, two methods for the prophylaxis of thrombosis have come into vo gue, namely low-dose heparin and dextran. Both these methods were tested in very extensive studies during the seventies, and their value has been unequivocally proved, for reducing both the frequency of thrombosis with and without symptoms, and the frequency of fatal pulmonary embolism. Thromboprophylaxis is not particularly common in surgery; how ever, and its general use is far from uncontested. It has been argued that not only does it complicate surgical activities and make them mo re expensive, but it also involves an unacceptable number of other complications.
