Book Prevention and protection against attacks on health care

Download or read book Prevention and protection against attacks on health care written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attacks on health care have wider repercussions than on the persons directly involved. They deprive people of urgently needed care, often when they are at their most vulnerable and need it most. They not only reduce access to health care, but also undermine entire health systems and long-term public health goals. There is no doubt that the suspension or closure of health services under attack affects millions of lives. In facilities that can remain partially functional, there may be a climate of fear, deterring yet more people from seeking life-saving care. This publication presents 7 good practices to protect, prevent and mitigate against attacks on health care documented in collaboration with WHO Country and Regional offices, partners and other actors and stakeholders in the health sector. These examples of good practices aim to support the health sector in acquiring knowledge on lessons learned in preventing attacks and protecting health care, exchanging ideas on adapting strategies, and analysing how tailored, feasible and effective interventions can be implemented.

Book Security Management for Healthcare

Download or read book Security Management for Healthcare written by Bernard J. Scaglione and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The healthcare industry is changing daily. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act and now the changes being made by the current administration, the financial outlook for healthcare is uncertain. Along with natural disasters, new diseases, and ransomware new challenges have developed for the healthcare security professional. One of the top security issues effecting hospitals today is workplace violence. People don’t usually act violently out of the blue. There are warning signs that can be missed or don’t get reported or, if they are reported, they may not be properly assessed and acted upon. Healthcare facilities need to have policies and procedures that require reporting of threatening or unusual behaviors. Having preventive policies and procedures in place is the first step in mitigating violence and providing a safe and security hospital. Persons working in the healthcare security field need to have information and tools that will allow them to work effectively within the healthcare climate. This holds true for security as well. Security professionals need to understand their risks and work to effectively mitigate threats. The author describes training techniques that can be accomplished within a limited budget. He explains how to manage staff more efficiently in order to save money and implement strategic plans to help acquire resources within a restricted revenue environment. Processes to manage emergent events, provide risk assessments, evaluate technology and understand information technology. The future of healthcare is uncertain, but proactive prevention and effective resolution provide the resources necessary to meet the challenges of the current and future healthcare security environment.

Book Healthcare Organization and Hospital Discussion Guide for Cyber Security

Download or read book Healthcare Organization and Hospital Discussion Guide for Cyber Security written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most problematic elements of cybersecurity is the quickly and constantly evolving nature of security risks. The traditional approach has been to focus resources on the crucial system components and protect against the biggest known threats, which necessitates leaving some less important system components undefended and some less dangerous risks unprotected. Such an approach is insufficient in the current environment. Healthcare organization and hospital computer systems can be attacked by hackers to steal or manipulate patients' financial or medical records or other information, and then be used for criminal activity or to create disorder and generate fear. Cyber attacks threaten healthcare organizations and hospitals' information technology (IT), its underlying security measures, and their employees' ability to care for patients and respond to emergencies. Risks can include the loss of patient information, disruption of care because of software unavailability, loss of confidence in providers because of the perception of inadequate security, power outages, destruction of generators, and risks to the operational integrity of personal medical devices (e.g., implantable cardioverter defibrillators, pacemakers, insulin pumps). In recent years, healthcare organizations and hospitals have increased the use of wireless, personal medical devices and network connections, which places these devices at risk for privacy and security breaches. For example, these wireless devices and network connections can be enabled and modified remotely.

Book Cybersecurity for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities

Download or read book Cybersecurity for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities written by Luis Ayala and published by Apress. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to detect and prevent the hacking of medical equipment at hospitals and healthcare facilities. A cyber-physical attack on building equipment pales in comparison to the damage a determined hacker can do if he/she gains access to a medical-grade network as a medical-grade network controls the diagnostic, treatment, and life support equipment on which lives depend. News reports inform us how hackers strike hospitals with ransomware that prevents staff from accessing patient records or scheduling appointments. Unfortunately, medical equipment also can be hacked and shut down remotely as a form of extortion. Criminal hackers will not ask for a $500 payment to unlock an MRI, PET or CT scan, or X-ray machine—they will ask for much more. Litigation is bound to follow and the resulting punitive awards will drive up hospital insurance costs and healthcare costs in general. This will undoubtedly result in increased regulations for hospitals and higher costs for compliance. Unless hospitals and other healthcare facilities take the steps necessary to secure their medical-grade networks, they will be targeted for cyber-physical attack, possibly with life-threatening consequences. Cybersecurity for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities is a wake-up call explaining what hackers can do, why hackers would target a hospital, the way hackers research a target, ways hackers can gain access to a medical-grade network (cyber-attack vectors), and ways hackers hope to monetize their cyber-attack. By understanding and detecting the threats, you can take action now—before your hospital becomes the next victim. What You Will Learn: Determine how vulnerable hospital and healthcare building equipment is to cyber-physical attack Identify possible ways hackers can hack hospital and healthcare facility equipment Recognize the cyber-attack vectors—or paths by which a hacker or cracker can gain access to a computer, a medical-grade network server, or expensive medical equipment in order to deliver a payload or malicious outcome Detect and prevent man-in-the-middle or denial-of-service cyber-attacks Find and prevent hacking of the hospital database and hospital web application Who This Book Is For: Hospital administrators, healthcare professionals, hospital & healthcare facility engineers and building managers, hospital & healthcare facility IT professionals, and HIPAA professionals

Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Before new interventions are released into disease control programmes, it is essential that they are carefully evaluated in field trials'. These may be complex and expensive undertakings, requiring the follow-up of hundreds, or thousands, of individuals, often for long periods. Descriptions of the detailed procedures and methods used in the trials that have been conducted have rarely been published. A consequence of this, individuals planning such trials have few guidelines available and little access to knowledge accumulated previously, other than their own. In this manual, practical issues in trial design and conduct are discussed fully and in sufficient detail, that Field Trials of Health Interventions may be used as a toolbox' by field investigators. It has been compiled by an international group of over 30 authors with direct experience in the design, conduct, and analysis of field trials in low and middle income countries and is based on their accumulated knowledge and experience. Available as an open access book via Oxford Medicine Online, this new edition is a comprehensive revision, incorporating the new developments that have taken place in recent years with respect to trials, including seven new chapters on subjects ranging from trial governance, and preliminary studies to pilot testing.

Book Foundations of Global Health and Human Rights

Download or read book Foundations of Global Health and Human Rights written by Lawrence O. Gostin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights are essential to global health, yet rising threats in an increasingly divided world are challenging the progressive evolution of health-related human rights. It is necessary to empower a new generation of scholars, advocates, and practitioners to sustain the global commitment to universal rights in public health. Looking to the next generation to face the struggles ahead, this book provides a detailed understanding of the evolving relationship between global health and human rights, laying a human rights foundation for the advancement of transformative health policies, programs, and practices. International human rights law has been repeatedly shown to advance health and wellbeing - empowering communities and fostering accountability for realizing the highest attainable standard of health. This book provides a compelling examination of international human rights as essential for advancing public health. It demonstrates how human rights strengthens human autonomy and dignity, while placing clear responsibilities on government to safeguard the public's health and safety. Bringing together leading academics in the field of health and human rights, this volume: (1) explains the norms and principles that define the field, (2) examines the methods and tools for implementing human rights to promote health, (3) applies essential human rights to leading public health threats, and (4) analyzes rising human rights challenges in a rapidly globalizing world. This foundational text shows why interdisciplinary scholarship and action are essential for health-related human rights, placing human rights at the center of public health and securing a future of global health with justice.

Book Forging a Poison Prevention and Control System

Download or read book Forging a Poison Prevention and Control System written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poisoning is a far more serious health problem in the U.S. than has generally been recognized. It is estimated that more than 4 million poisoning episodes occur annually, with approximately 300,000 cases leading to hospitalization. The field of poison prevention provides some of the most celebrated examples of successful public health interventions, yet surprisingly the current poison control "system" is little more than a loose network of poison control centers, poorly integrated into the larger spheres of public health. To increase their effectiveness, efforts to reduce poisoning need to be linked to a national agenda for public health promotion and injury prevention. Forging a Poison Prevention and Control System recommends a future poison control system with a strong public health infrastructure, a national system of regional poison control centers, federal funding to support core poison control activities, and a national poison information system to track major poisoning epidemics and possible acts of bioterrorism. This framework provides a complete "system" that could offer the best poison prevention and patient care services to meet the needs of the nation in the 21st century.
