Book Stop the Slip

Download or read book Stop the Slip written by Thom Disch and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slips, trips and falls are a chronic health problem in the US and around the world. Fall injuries are the number one cause of emergency room visits and the fourteenth leading cause of death in the US. The average person is 7 times more likely to die from a fall than from the flu and 3 times more likely to die from a fall than by a firearm. Since 1999, we have reduced deaths from heart disease 15%. Deaths caused by auto accidents are down 12%. But during that same time period deaths from falls have increased over 150%. Both injuries and deaths caused by falls are at record highs and the problem continues to grow. We've learned how to fix the human heart and we have made driving safer. Now is the time to focus on preventing fall injuries. The good news is that fall injuries are preventable. Everyone falls, but falls don't just happen, they're preceded by other events. When you eliminate those events, you reduce the risk of falling. Stop the Slip shows how you can avoid these injuries. Following the simple five step A-L-E-R-T System(tm) discussed in the book you will reduce your risk of falling.Thom Disch provides an entertaining and engaging look at: Why we fall; where we fall; the business side of falls; and most importantly how we can prevent and avoid fall injuries. The book is a comprehensive mix of research on the topic of falls and fall injuries mixed with real world stories and experiences about falls and their consequences. As you read this book you'll also discover many interesting and surprising facts. For example: *Fall injuries are not just a problem for the elderly. 75% of all fall injuries happen to people under the age of 68.*The annual economic impact of fall injuries in the US exceeds $150 billion, or more than 1% of our gross domestic product. *Falls are the number one cause of traumatic brain injuries. *Falls cause nearly 4 times more emergency room visits than auto accidents.

Book Slip Trip and Fall Prevention for Healthcare Workers

Download or read book Slip Trip and Fall Prevention for Healthcare Workers written by Department of Health and Human Services and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work-related slip, trip, and fall incidents can frequently result in serious disabling injuries that impact a healthcare employee's ability to do his or her job, often resulting in lost workdays, reduced productivity, expensive worker compensation claims, and diminished ability to care for patients. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics [2009], the incidence rate of lost-workday injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STFs) on the same level in hospitals was 38.2 per 10,000 employees, which was 90% greater than the average rate for all other private industries combined (20.1 per 10,000 employees). STFs as a whole are the second most common cause of lost-workday injuries in hospitals. An analysis of workers' compensation injury claims from acute-care hospitals showed that the lower extremities (knees, ankles, feet) were the body parts most commonly injured after STFs and the nature of injury was most often sprains, strains, dislocations and tears. In addition, STFs were significantly more likely to result in fractures and multiple injuries than were other types of injuries. This workbook identifies the top 10 STF hazards specific to healthcare facilities. For each hazard this workbook will: 1. Explain how the hazard contributes to STFs, 2. Identify where the hazard is likely to occur, and 3. Provide recommendations to reduce or eliminate the hazard. Slips, trips, and falls are preventable. This workbook provides guidance on implementing a STF prevention program to protect healthcare workers. The goal of the workbook is to familiarize you with common STF hazards in healthcare facilities so you are able to recognize and reduce the risk to employees. Both visitors and patients will benefit from an STF prevention program in your facility reducing their risk as well.

Book Handbook of Human Motion

Download or read book Handbook of Human Motion written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Human Motion is a large cross-disciplinary reference work which covers the many interlinked facets of the science and technology of human motion and its measurement. Individual chapters cover fundamental principles and technological developments, the state-of-the-art and consider applications across four broad and interconnected fields; medicine, sport, forensics and animation. The huge strides in technological advancement made over the past century make it possible to measure motion with unprecedented precision, but also lead to new challenges. This work introduces the many different approaches and systems used in motion capture, including IR and ultrasound, mechanical systems and video, plus some emerging techniques. The large variety of techniques used for the study of motion science in medicine can make analysis a complicated process, but extremely effective for the treatment of the patient when well utilised. The handbook descri bes how motion capture techniques are applied in medicine, and shows how the resulting analysis can help in diagnosis and treatment. A closely related field, sports science involves a combination of in-depth medical knowledge and detailed understanding of performance and training techniques, and motion capture can play an extremely important role in linking these disciplines. The handbook considers which technologies are most appropriate in specific circumstances, how they are applied and how this can help prevent injury and improve sporting performance. The application of motion capture in forensic science and security is reviewed, with chapters dedicated to specific areas including employment law, injury analysis, criminal activity and motion/facial recognition. And in the final area of application, the book describes how novel motion capture techniques have been designed specifically to aid the creation of increasingly realistic animation within films and v ideo games, with Lord of the Rings and Avatar just two examples. Chapters will provide an overview of the bespoke motion capture techniques developed for animation, how these have influenced advances in film and game design, and the links to behavioural studies, both in humans and in robotics. Comprising a cross-referenced compendium of different techniques and applications across a broad field, the Handbook of Human Motion provides the reader with a detailed reference and simultaneously a source of inspiration for future work. The book will be of use to students, researchers, engineers and others working in any field relevant to human motion capture.
