Together they are a perfect example towards the creation of effective risk management to reduce "real world" risks. And together you have a new and comprehensive resource on a subject that has been present since the beginning of the automobile. Everyone who drives a motor vehicle has the exposures covered in this material. We all want to protect the significant value of our vehicle. But more importantly, we need to protect ourselves from personal harm. While on the surface the topics presented may seem hard wired into our minds, in reality they need to be visited and revisited. They need to be shared with both new drivers and drivers of all ages. -Sam S. Book Making Public Places Safer

Download or read book Making Public Places Safer written by Brandon C. Welsh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Kingdom has more than 4.2 million public closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras-one for every fourteen citizens. Across the United States, hundreds of video surveillance systems are being installed in town centers, public transportation facilities, and schools at a cost exceeding $100 million annually. And now other Western countries have begun to experiment with CCTV to prevent crime in public places. In light of this expansion and the associated public expenditure, as well as pressing concerns about privacy rights, there is an acute need for an evidence-based approach to inform policy and practice. Drawing on the highest-quality research, criminologists Brandon C. Welsh and David P. Farrington assess the effectiveness and social costs of not only CCTV, but also of other important surveillance methods to prevent crime in public space, such as improved street lighting, security guards, place managers, and defensible space. Importantly, the book goes beyond the question of "Does it work?" and examines the specific conditions and contexts under which these surveillance methods may have an effect on crime as well as the mechanisms that bring about a reduction in crime. At a time when cities need cost-effective methods to fight crime and the public gradually awakens to the burdens of sacrificing their privacy and civil rights for security, Welsh and Farrington provide this timely and reliable guide to the most effective and non-invasive uses of surveillance to make public places safer from crime.

Book Crime Prevention

Download or read book Crime Prevention written by Nick Tilley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise and up-to-date account of crime prevention theory, practice and research in a form designed to be accessible and interesting to both students and practitioners. Readers will be equipped to think in an informed and critical way about what has been and might be done in practice to prevent crime at local and national levels. What is distinctive in the approach is the emphasis on crime reduction mechanisms, how they may be activated and the intended and unintended patterns of outcome produced. Each of chapters two to five takes this as its organizing principle. The key aim is to clearly convey ideas, arguments and evidence as simply as possible whilst doing justice to the material available.

Book Crime Prevention in the Urban Community

Download or read book Crime Prevention in the Urban Community written by Miyazawa Koichi and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of today's most pressing issues in criminology and crime prevention is the problem of crime in our cities and towns and its prevention. The topic of crime prevention in the Urban Community was discussed at the 47th International Course of the International Society for Criminology (ISC) held at Chuo University, Tokyo. It was the very first time such an ISC meeting was held in Asia and this meant that finally a relatively large number of Japanese and other Asian participants were able to express their views on criminal policy and crime prevention in urban centres all over the world. Crime in urban communities is not an exclusively Western phenomenon, but it is also a considerable problem in other parts of the world. This makes an interchange of ideas between Western, Eastern and Third-World criminologists particularly important. General characteristics of the urban communities that suffer from a high crime rate are ethnic and racial tensions, a mix of old housing areas and new business districts, a prevailing sense of anonymity, slums and juvenile delinquency. The existence of these general characteristics besides mutual differences makes cooperation in the crime prevention sphere definitely worth the effort.

Book Become a Problem Solving Crime Analyst

Download or read book Become a Problem Solving Crime Analyst written by Ronald Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime analysis has become an increasingly important part of policing and crime prevention, and thousands of specialist crime analysts are now employed by police forces worldwide. This is the first book to set out the principles and practice of crime analysis, and is designed to be used both by crime analysts themselves, by those responsible for the training of crime analysts and teaching its principles, and those teaching this subject as part of broader policing and criminal justice courses. The particular focus of this book is on the adoption of a problem solving approach, showing how crime analysis can be used and developed to support a problem oriented policing approach – based on the idea that the police should concentrate on identifying patterns of crime and anticipating crimes rather than just reacting to crimes once they have been committed. In his foreword to this book, Nick Ross, presenter of BBC Crime Watch, argues passionately that crime analysts are 'the new face of policing', and have a crucial part to play in the increasingly sophisticated police response to crime and its approach to crime prevention – 'You are the brains, the expert, the specialist, the boffin.'
