Book excerpt: Abstract: This study utilized data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) (Waves I and II) to examine variations in Latina adolescents' level of suicide proclivity as predicted by friendship networks, family support, cultural status and behavioral health (Harris, Mullan, Halpern, Entzel, Tabor, Bearman & Udry, 2008). By examining these correlates of suicide, this study concentrated on two specific objectives set forth by Healthy People 2010: reducing the number of adolescents who experience suicide and reducing the number of future adults who ideate or attempt suicide (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2001). Add Health's stratified cluster design and over-sampling obtained an appropriate number of Latinas (1,618) in the sample. The data include network-level variables to distinguish particular peer group factors that predict suicide. Measures used in this study explored the extent to which cultural status, self-reported parental support, friendship characteristics (reciprocity and suicidal friends) and behavioral health status (depression and substance use) were linked to suicide proclivity (ideations and attempts). Logistic and negative binomial regression analyses were used to observe any predictive or mediating relationships the types of friendships and familial supports had with suicide proclivity. The goal was to ascertain the way in which the cultural status of the Latinas, the type of friends they reported and the level of social support they received from their parents and teachers determined their incidence of suicidal ideation and attempts. Determining the extent to which these factors help account for variation in suicidal thoughts and behaviors will aid in proposing effective strategies for prevention. Empirically-based suicide prevention programs geared specifically for Latinas are important given that these females have higher suicide attempt rates when compared to African American and White teens (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2008). Although the U.S Bureau of the Census does not provide information explicitly regarding Latina adolescents, the Latino population continuing to grow in the U.S. Almost half (48%) of the Latino population comprised of children, preventing suicide among Latina adolescents is essential (CDC, 2006).

Book excerpt: Latina adolescents are more likely to suffer from depressive symptoms and less likely to receive mental health services for depression than their White peers, and this mental health disparity is poorly understood. The purpose of this dissertation study is to describe how Latina adolescents experience and seek mental health services for their depressive symptoms. The dissertation includes three components. The first is an integrative literature review to determine which cultural stressors are associated with depressive symptoms among Latino/a youth. The results indicate that discrimination, family culture conflict, acculturative and bicultural stress, intragroup rejection, immigration stress, and context of reception are associated with depressive symptoms in this population. The second and third components were based on interviews with 25 Latinas (ages 13-20) who experienced depressive symptoms during adolescence. In the second component, a content analysis was conducted to determine cultural stressors experienced by contemporary Latinas living in a tumultuous sociopolitical climate in the United States. The stressors included (a) pressure to succeed, (b) parental oversight, (c) being treated differently, and (d) fears of deportation. In the third component, grounded theory methods were used to develop a theoretical framework to describe the process by which Latina adolescents self-managed and sought treatment for depressive symptoms. In this framework, participants shared a psychosocial problem labeled Being Overburdened and Becoming Depressed. They responded to this problem through the psychosocial process labeled Getting a Grip on My Depression, which consisted of five phases: 1) hiding my depression, 2) keeping my depression under control, 3) having my depression revealed, 4) skirting treatment for my depression, and 5) deciding to move on from depression. The Latino family, peer groups, and mainstream authorities influenced the participants' experiences. The process of experiencing, self-managing, and seeking treatment for depressive symptoms for Latina adolescents is both similar to and unique from the processes by which other groups of adolescents experience depressive symptoms. These results will contribute to the development of culturally-sensitive strategies to prevent, identify, and treat depressive symptoms in Latina adolescents.

While these numbers came as a shock to the general public, many urban clinicians have long suspected this disparity without having the data to confirm the problem or draw attention to it. Here, in a compelling account of a troubling trend that draws on interviews conducted both with girls who attempted suicide and those who did not, Luis Zayas begins to unravel the mystery of why young Latinas attempt suicide in such great numbers. Beginning with a description of the U.S. Hispanic population and the many values, beliefs, norms, and child-rearing practices that Hispanic families share in common, Zayas goes on to look at the development of young Latinas, girls caught between two cultures, struggling to reconcile them. In this book, a broad definition of culture is utilized that includes such facets as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic or social class status, disability, religion, sexual orientation and gender. This book is intended to present research, theory and suggestions for practice that are grounded in diverse cultural contexts and current scholarship. It will assist researchers, students and practitioners who are studying and working within diverse populations. Currently there exists no comprehensive text that addresses the intersection of positive psychology and multiculturalism. Several edited volumes address positive psychology constructs (e.g., well-being, optimal experience, autonomy) across cultures, but they do not focus on multicultural populations within the United States. Other books focus more specifically on mental health applications and stress and coping among multicultural populations, however these books do not provide a broad perspective on psychology beyond this application piece. The proposed book will review current theory and research about constructs in addition to applications across contexts. Finally, other published books have focused on youth within multicultural society; this volume is more broad in its address of issues of positive psychology across the lifespan and across various aspects of identity including disability, gender, social class and sexual orientation.
