Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet by Jonathan Meyer is a wonderful example of combining your personal and professional skills for the benefit of others. This material will benefit you on the topics of car theft, insurance fraud, and personal safety; topics of concern for every motor vehicle driver. Add to this subject Mr. Meyer's knowledge of Martial Arts; which has its core, the value of preparation, observation, and proactive defensive. Together they are a perfect example towards the creation of effective risk management to reduce "real world" risks. And together you have a new and comprehensive resource on a subject that has been present since the beginning of the automobile. Everyone who drives a motor vehicle has the exposures covered in this material. We all want to protect the significant value of our vehicle. But more importantly, we need to protect ourselves from personal harm. While on the surface the topics presented may seem hard wired into our minds, in reality they need to be visited and revisited. They need to be shared with both new drivers and drivers of all ages. -Sam S. Revenson President Associated Risk Management "Jon Meyer has packed this small book with dozens of great tips for the safety conscious public. There is an old saying 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.' This book is a pound of prevention." Prof. Arthur Cohen B.A., M.A. a.k.a. "The Streetwise Professor" Director Center for School and Personal Safety Research

The Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention brings together in one authoritative resource the dispersed information and knowledge on both victimology and crime prevention. Book The Infrastructures of Security

Download or read book The Infrastructures of Security written by Martin Murray and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the South African government’s response to crime—especially in Johannesburg—has been to rely increasingly on technology. This includes the widespread use of video cameras, Artificial Intelligence, machine-learning, and automated systems, effectively replacing human watchers with machine watchers. The aggregate effect of such steps is to determine who is, and isn’t, allowed to be in public spaces—essentially another way to continue segregation. In The Infrastructures of Security, author Martin J. Murray concentrates on not only the turn toward technological solutions to managing the risk of crime through digital (and software-based) surveillance and automated information systems, but also the introduction of somewhat bizarre and fly-by-night experimental “answers” to perceived risk and danger. Digitalized surveillance is significant for two reasons: first, it enables monitoring to take place across wide "geographical distances with little time delay"; and second, it allows for the active sorting, identification, and "tracking of bodies, behaviors, and characteristics of subject populations on a continuous, real-time basis." These new software-based surveillance technologies represent monitoring, tracking, and information gathering without walls, towers, or guards.

Download or read book Overcriminalization written by Douglas Husak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States today suffers from too much criminal law and too much punishment. Husak describes the phenomena in some detail and explores their relation, and why these trends produce massive injustice. His primary goal is to defend a set of constraints that limit the authority of states to enact and enforce penal offenses. The book urges the weight and relevance of this topic in the real world, and notes that most Anglo-American legal philosophers have neglected it. Husak's secondary goal is to situate this endeavor in criminal theory as traditionally construed. He argues that many of the resources to reduce the size and scope of the criminal law can be derived from within the criminal law itself-even though these resources have not been used explicitly for this purpose. Additional constraints emerge from a political view about the conditions under which important rights such as the right implicated by punishment-may be infringed. When conjoined, these constraints produce what Husak calls a minimalist theory of criminal liability. Husak applies these constraints to a handful of examples-most notably, to the justifiability of drug proscriptions.
