Book Teenage Wasteland

Download or read book Teenage Wasteland written by Donna Gaines and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998-04-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teenage Wasteland provides memorable portraits of "rock and roll kids" and shrewd analyses of their interests in heavy metal music and Satanism. A powerful indictment of the often manipulative media coverage of youth crises and so-called alternative programs designed to help "troubled" teens, Teenage Wasteland draws new conclusions and presents solid reasons to admire the resilience of suburbia's dead end kids. "A powerful book."—Samuel G. Freedman, New York Times Book Review "[Gaines] sheds light on a poorly understood world and raises compelling questions about what society might do to help this alienated group of young people."—Ann Grimes, Washington Post Book World "There is no comparable study of teenage suburban culture . . . and very few ethnographic inquiries written with anything like Gaines's native gusto or her luminous eye for detail."—Andrew Ross, Transition "An outstanding case study. . . . Gaines shows how teens engage in cultural production and how such social agency is affected by economic transformations and institutional interventions."—Richard Lachman, Contemporary Sociology "The best book on contemporary youth culture."—Rolling Stone

Book Youth and Society

Download or read book Youth and Society written by Vappu Tyyskä and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essential third edition, Vappu Tyyskä examines the challenges faced by today's young people through a critical lens. Difficult questions related to such issues as employment, education, social pressure, identity, and crime are explored by Tyyskä as she paints a fascinating picture of modern youth in three countries: Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The author explores the negative stereotypes surrounding young people, and argues that it is time to contextualize our understanding of youth by addressing the underlying social, economic, and political issues they face. Each of the ten revised chapters begins with a list of key learning objectives and ends with discussion questions to aid in the learning process and stimulate critical thinking. This new edition incorporates updated statistics, comprehensive tables, and revised narratives in which the author explores topics pertinent to today's youth such as the influence of social media, eating disorders, and recent changes to the juvenile justice system.

Book One Parent s Story Struggle Teenagers What Was I Thinking

Download or read book One Parent s Story Struggle Teenagers What Was I Thinking written by Leon Segers Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the title of this book indicates "One parent's story, struggle" it's actually about the battle between all parents and teens; or simply adults and teens in general. I say battle, but it has actually risen to the potential for what I call generational warfare. Basically, teenagers have little respect for adults; especially parents. The protocol is simple; and yes most adults do recall progressing strategically in the same way during their own youth. Even before we're born; we make demands. Then after we've grown a few years; we make many more demands. By the age of ten to thirteen, we more than expect those demands to unquestionably be met. Finally by the last 3 to 5 years of youth while living at home with our parents; we've assessed who our biggest enemy is and how we would like to take down who we now see as both an enemy, and a "dictator". Simply put: after you've bitten the hand that feeds you for so long; that hand begins to appear useless. And once that represents uselessness; the person behind that outreaching hand, also serves no purpose to you. So the stage is set. Teenagers won't look back with any sense of appreciation; and parents, who also continued to grow; will look back and wonder: was it all worth it. Many are optimistic, while others are in denial. But most can only feel one thing "What was I thinking."

Book Teenage Writings

Download or read book Teenage Writings written by Jane Austen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Jane Austen practising' Virginia Woolf Three notebooks of Jane Austen's teenage writings survive. The earliest pieces probably date from 1786 or 1787, around the time that Jane, aged 11 or 12, and her older sister and collaborator Cassandra left school. By this point Austen was already an indiscriminate and precocious reader, devouring pulp fiction and classic literature alike; what she read, she soon began to imitate and parody. Unlike many teenage writings then and now, these are not secret or agonized confessions entrusted to a private journal and for the writer's eyes alone. Rather, they are stories to be shared and admired by a named audience of family and friends. Devices and themes which appear subtly in Austen's later fiction run riot openly and exuberantly across the teenage page. Drunkenness, brawling, sexual misdemeanour, theft, and even murder prevail.

Book The Assignment

Download or read book The Assignment written by Liza Wiemer and published by Ember. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a real-life incident, this riveting novel explores the dangerous impact discrimination and antisemitism have on one community when a school assignment goes terribly wrong. Would you defend the indefensible? That's what seniors Logan March and Cade Crawford are asked to do when a favorite teacher instructs a group of students to argue for the Final Solution--the Nazi plan for the genocide of the Jewish people. Logan and Cade decide they must take a stand, and soon their actions draw the attention of the student body, the administration, and the community at large. But not everyone feels as Logan and Cade do--after all, isn't a school debate just a school debate? It's not long before the situation explodes, and acrimony and anger result. Based on true events, The Assignment asks: What does it take for tolerance, justice, and love to prevail? "An important look at a critical moment in history through a modern lens showcasing the power of student activism." --SLJ
