And for many, new to the area, it can be a scary, unnerving experience, trying to navigate through its seemingly endless and labyrinthine maze of many differently numbered freeways with their connecting ramps and roadways. it is no cinch; even for natives, many of whom at times prefer to use regular surface streets. Can you imagine what might happen to an inexperienced driver trying to find their way in this maze in bad weather? This is a story of one such hapless individual, caught in such a dilemma and all the resulting adventures. Absolutely incredible! Breath-taking! Yes indeed, truly-----Amazing!

Book A Sociology of Place in Australia

Download or read book A Sociology of Place in Australia written by Claire Baker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book weaves a social, economic and cultural history of Australia with rare first-hand accounts of the lived experience of change related to farming and agriculture. It provides a rich sociology of how living on the land has changed throughout Australia’s history. The book investigates the complex effects of the state on everyday life, using an historical agricultural case study of place to explore long-running sociohistorical processes of change examined through both a macro and micro sociological lens. This provides a multi-faceted perspective from which to examine economic, social and cultural transformations in each of these contexts and change is examined through multiple sites of expression: public policy and the role of the state; colonial processes of dispossession; social and cultural systems of value; economic change and its consequences; farming practices and lived experience; neoliberalism and globalisation and their social impacts; community decline and trends toward corporate and foreign land ownership. Each of these transformations impact upon lived experience and everyday life and this book provides grounded insight into exactly this relationship and process.

Book Memory Meaning and Resistance

Download or read book Memory Meaning and Resistance written by Fran Leeper Buss and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fran Leeper Buss, a former welfare recipient who earned a PhD in history and became a pioneer in the field of oral history, has for forty years dedicated herself to the goal of collecting the stories of marginal and working-class U.S. women. Memory, Meaning, and Resistance is based on over 100 oral histories gathered from women from a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographical backgrounds, including a traditional Mexican American midwife, a Latina poet and organizer for the United Farm Workers, and an African American union and freedom movement organizer. Buss now analyzes this body of work, identifying common themes in women’s lives and resistance that unite the oral histories she has gathered. From the beginning, her work has shed light on the inseparable, compounding effects of gender, race, ethnicity, and class on women’s lives—what is now commonly called intersectionality. Memory, Meaning, and Resistance is structured thematically, with each chapter analyzing a concept that runs through the oral histories, e.g., agency, activism, religion. The result is a testament to women’s individual and collective strength, and an invaluable guide for students and researchers, on how to effectively and sensitively conduct oral histories that observe, record, recount, and analyze women’s life stories.

From her experience in basic training in Daytona Beach to the climactic moment when she saw the Statue of Liberty as her ship approached American shores upon her return home, this work provides a glimpse into the life of a woman in uniform during this crucial time in American history.
