Book excerpt: Relaxation is one of the main sources of time-dependent stress losses in prestressed concrete construction. In the present study, an experimental investigation of the stress relaxation of the prestressing steel used in construction of the Confederation Bridge is undertaken. Relaxation is measured by monitoring the reduction in stress level in an elastically strained specimen and maintained at a constant extension. Two testing methods are adopted for the experimental program, namely, the release method and the lateral deflection method. A special setup is built for each of the two testing methods. Six specimens are tested using the release testing method. Of these, two specimens are tested at each of the three initial stress levels: 60%, 70% and 80% of the ultimate strength of the steel. The lateral deflection testing method is conducted on two specimens at two initial stress levels of 60% and 70% of the ultimate strength of the steel. The experimental results of this research are compared with steel stress relaxation estimated by the PCI expression and the CEB-FIP Code equation. These comparisons show that the available expressions underestimate the magnitude of stress relaxation losses. Based on the results of this research, an alternative equation to estimate stress relaxation of steel is proposed.

Book excerpt: Concrete has not been a competitive alternative for roof applications due to the heavy weight and construction complexity of concrete components, which results in being less cost effective than steel. Despite the advantages of structural steel roof systems, they have the following disadvantages: low fire resistance, being prone to corrosion, high maintenance cost, long lag period in steel orders, and increasing prices of steel. Most of these disadvantages can be addressed by using precast concrete components as they have excellent fire and corrosion resistance, low production and maintenance cost, and short order period. Recently more extensive use of precast/prestressed concrete components, which are fabricated off-site and then connected on-site, has been taking place worldwide since it shows significant benefits compared to the conventional poured on site concrete technology. Among others, the benefits are in accelerating the construction time, enhancing the quality of concrete works, improving its durability and in general generating competitive structural cost. Pre-grouted prestressing tendon, primarily in the form of single strands, was generally applied to transverse prestressing of deck slabs or other work. When pre-grouted prestressing strands are used for main tendon, more prestressing strands are required than when conventional multiple strands are used. Numerous prestressing strands therefore should be anchored in a limited anchorage region. Hence, attention should be paid in design for the arrangement of pre-grouted prestressing tendons and details of anchorage.This book entitled "Prestressed Concrete Design" aims to give an overview of the recent evolution in the design and construction of prestressed concrete worldwide. Several major trends are outline. A number of innovative techniques have been described to enhance both the structural performance and the durability of concrete. It will also address and focus on the extent to the use of structural and precast ecoefficient concretes in the applications which have been developed comply with current standards.

Book excerpt: This report is a review of selected failures in concrete structures in which prestressing steels break in a brittle way due to stress corrosion cracking. Most cases are from the German experience over a period of about 30 years. Analysis of these failures shows that they are often due to an accumulation of causes such as poor design, errors during construction, careless detailing and, in some cases, use of unsuitable materials. This report will have achieved its purpose if it serves to avoid these past errors and encourages the development of new ways to protect, test and regulate prestressing steels. The report is complemented with comments on the properties and corrosion behaviour of different types of prestressing steels. The goal of the study is to provide objective arguments for the discussion of failures that have occurred due to corrosion induced failure of prestressing steel. In such a way the general regulation given in DIN with respect to reinforcement for robustness may eventually be proven inappropriate. The general building authority approval for prestressed hollow filler block floors already supports such an idea. It is well known that the hollow block floor industry works without any reinforcing steel. The regulations in the standards should not limit in particular the use of these types of prestressing steel (cold-formed wires, strands) which have proven not associated with any substantial failures cases reported in the last 35 years. The report reviews the historical development with respect to corrosion induced failure of prestressing steel. Concerning the circumstances of the failure examples, this review partly reflects a specific problem in Germany. Also reviewed are other known interregional examples of failure which are incorrectly attributed to the prestressed construction method. All cases considered are discussed and the failure reasons thoroughly evaluated, also with reference to the results of most recent research. Another question addressed is whether one should be concerned over corrosion induced retarded failure even when using new generation prestressing steel with correct corrosion protection. Finally a contribution to the following very important question is presented: Do the future prestressed structures possess enough safety against structural failure if they are constructed without reinforcement for robustness but otherwise comply completely with the design standards? To aid a better understanding of this short report on typical failure cases and their origins, the main conditions are set out for corrosion-induced failure of prestressing steel in technical applications. The properties of different types of prestressing steel and their application limits are given in a special section dealing with the influence of building materials on damage development. This report will be of interest to all involved in the construction process. Fundamental scientific discussion has been avoided by reference to well accredited detailed information in the technical literature.
