Book Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion Second Generation System Research and Development

Download or read book Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion Second Generation System Research and Development written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research is being conducted under United States Department of Energy (DOE) Contract DE-AC21-86MC21023 to develop a new type of coal-fired plant for electric power generation. This new type of plant--called a Second-Generation or Advanced Pressurized Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (APCFB) plant--offers the promise of efficiencies greater than 45% (HHV), with both emissions and a cost of electricity that are significantly lower than conventional pulverized-coal-fired plants with scrubbers. The APCFB plant incorporates the partial gasification of coal in a carbonizer, the combustion of carbonizer char in a pressurized circulating fluidized bed boiler (PCFB), and the combustion of carbonizer syngas in a topping combustor to achieve gas turbine inlet temperatures of 2300 F and higher. A conceptual design was previously prepared for this new type of plant and an economic analysis presented, all based on the use of a Siemens Westinghouse W501F gas turbine with projected carbonizer, PCFB, and topping combustor performance data. Having tested these components at the pilot plant stage, the referenced conceptual design is being updated to reflect more accurate performance predictions together with the use of the more advanced Siemens Westinghouse W501G gas turbine and a conventional 2400 psig/1050 F/1050 F/2-1/2 in. steam turbine. This report describes the updated plant which is projected to have an HHV efficiency of 48% and identifies work completed for the October 2001 through September 2002 time period.

Book Fluidized Bed Boilers

Download or read book Fluidized Bed Boilers written by Prabir Basu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluidized Bed Boilers: Design and Application attempts to address the need for a single source of information covering all major areas of fluidized bed boiler design and operation. It is based on the International Workshop on Design and Operation of Atmospheric Pressure Fluidized Bed Boilers, organized by the Center for Energy Studies, Technical University of Nova Scotia in Halifax on 24-45 June 1983. The volume begins by presenting a simplified approach to the design of a fluidized bed boiler and an overview of problems in fluidized-bed combustion (FBC). These are followed by separate chapters on the equations and concepts needed to estimate key hydrodynamic parameters; the key factors and terms to be considered in selecting FBC for specific applications; and principles in the design of air distributors for a fluidized bed boiler. Subsequent chapters discuss heat transfer to surfaces in fluidized beds; the pollution control of fluidized bed combustion of solid fuels; and materials selection in atmospheric fluidized bed combustion systems. The final two chapters are devoted to applications. These include the operational and performance results of TVA’s 20-MW Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion (AFBC) Pilot Plant in Kentucky; and the performance of Canada's first commercial FBC boiler plant, located at CFB Summerside, PEI.

Book Evaluation of a pressurized fluidized bed combustion PFBC combined cycle power plant conceptual design

Download or read book Evaluation of a pressurized fluidized bed combustion PFBC combined cycle power plant conceptual design written by Burns and Roe Industrial Services Corporation and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conclusions drawn from the studies performed during this reporting period are as follows: The PFB/AFB combined cycle commercial plant investigated will have a capital cost of $567/kw and a cost of electricity of 28.47 mils/kw-hr based on mid-1977 costs. Based on a trade-off study performed during this reporting period, it is concluded that the use of field assembled PFB combustors will be more economical than using shop assembled and rail-shipped units. Due to the reduced size of shop assembled combustors, the number of units used must be increased by a factor of five. A technical and economic comparison of various systems proposed for removal of PFB particulates from the gas entering the gas turbine indicates that two Aerodyne two-stage cyclones in series may be more appropriate for this application than systems based on either Ducon's Granular Bed Filter or Donaldson's Tan-Jet cyclones. However, further development effort is required to confirm the performance of these units and to establish the maximum permissible loading entering a gas turbine. With reasonable care in operations and the use of commercially available control methods, fugitive dust emissions from coal and sorbent handling and storage systems and solid waste disposal systems can be minimized. Water borne pollutants from coal pile runoff and leachates from waste disposal areas require additional study and special handling to insure that ground water contamination does not occur.

Book State of the Art of Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion Systems

Download or read book State of the Art of Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was prepared at the request of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to clarify the development status of the pressurized fluidized bed combustor (PFBC) and to place in perspective the problems which are yet to be solved before commercialization of the concept is practical. This report, in essence, supersedes the interim report published in 1979, Assessment of the State of the Art of Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion Systems. A brief overview of the PFBC concept is included citing potential advantages and disadvantages relative to atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) and conventional pulverized coal plants. A survey of existing and developing PFBC experimental facilities is presented in some detail which includes the major accomplishments at the respective facilities. Recent data on plant emissions, turbine/gas cleanup systems, and overall efficiency are provided. Findings of several design studies are also discussed. The results of recent gas turbine and cascade tests have been encouraging although the full assessment of the accomplishments have not been made. The delay in construction of the Grimethorpe plant causes further delay in proof-testing full-size, rotating turbomachinery. Several parameters are recommended for further assessment in design studies including: (1) effect of turbine life on cost of power; and (2) effect of reduced gas turbine inlet temperature and pressure on cost of power.
