Book excerpt: The Sandia Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M., established wind tunnel data of 3 ft ribbon parachute models concerning canopy profiles, drag forces and pressure distribution during the period of inflation. The data were analyzed at the University of Minnesota and resulted in presentations of canopy profile coordinates, drag areas and pressure distributions versus time. Pressure integration about the canopy surfaces as given by the established coordinates provided calculated areas which agreed satisfactorily with measured drag areas. Also, radial force coefficients of the various configurations were established. The results of this study are intended to serve as background information for related investigations such as studies concerning parachute dynamics, stress analysis, etc.

Book excerpt: The following report describes the continuation of wind tunnel data evaluation as shown in Progress Reports 3 through 14 under Sandia Coropration Contract 63-2241 amd 02-4022, Ref 1 to 13. The data presented in this report are related to disreefing tests of a conical ribbon parachute with 140° included angle, concentric rings, and 25% geometric porosity. The data concerning the canopy profile and pressure distributions will be presented in chronological order starting at the time of disreefing and proceeding through inflation at various time intervals until steady state conditions for the fully inflated parachute are reached. The recorded and derived data recorded and derived data are used to obtain-force time histories which can be compared with a measured force-time recording. Also, so called radial force coefficients are derived which are based on the established canopy profiles and the related pressure data.

The parachutes were forcibly deployed from an air-launched test vehicle at altitudes from 55,000 feet to 70,000 feet and at Mach numbers between 0.92 and 1.52. Opening shock, steady-state drag performance, and canopy-porosity effects are evaluated with respect to Mach number and dynamic pressure. The conical canopy design appears to function far better than the flat canopy at supersonic deployment speeds. The relatively high-porosity conical design improves the parachute stability, with the added benefit of a low opening shock. The drag efficiency of the conical canopy is equivalent to that of the flat canopy having 50-percent-lower porosity. Riser elasticity and length also appear to be important parameters affecting the parachute stability. Reducing the weight of the test vehicle by a factor of one-third had a negligible effect on the stability and drag characteristics of the parachute.

The method is based on assumed instantaneous and steady state shapes and related pressure distributions. It is general and may be applied to any type and size of canopy built out of solid cloth. The presented analysis is limited to canopies constructed of triangular gores, but can be extended to other gore patterns. A numerical calculation is made for the Solid Flat, Circular Parachute during the opening and at steady state.

This lower velocity is known as rate of descent, landing velocity, or impact velocity, and is determined by the following requirements: (1) landing personnel uninjured and ready for action, (2) landing equipment and air vehicles undamaged and ready for use or refurbishment, and (3) impacting ordnance at a preselected angle and velocity.

The measured mass flows are correlated with inviscid flow as a measure of the canopy's accommodation of the air mass available at the mouth inlet under specific operation conditions. In conjunction with the actual measurements of mass flow, the pressure distributions on the internal and external canopy surfaces were determined. These measurements were made on models with suspension lines as well as on models without suspension lines so that suitable estimates of suspension line effects could be made. Measurements were made at Mach 0.8, 1.2, and 3.0. In addition, several tests were conducted in the wake of an ogive cylinder located at two upstream positions. (Author).

Angles of attack varied from 0 to 30 degrees and photographs of the models and attendant smoke stream patterns were obtained for each test condition.
