What are the interorganizational flows of authority and finance between them? How is work grouped, in what unit sizes, how specialized and formalized are work processes? How complex, dynamic, diversified, or friendly is their environment? What are the power issues and how do the technological processes affect these organizations? How do the OCOGs evolve in their life cycle, what pressures shape their structures and management processes and how is work co-ordinated? The examination of the Olympic Games event organization in the 10-year period, from bidding to post-games closing down, draws material from host cities to explore the types of interorganizational flows that take place at various stages for the Olympic Games to be delivered. Knowledge transfer from one host city to the next and an established organizational field also means that management practises sometimes follow some externally imposed organizing logics. The challenges faced by organizers are discussed and the tensions that a strong management template from the IOC creates are also examined. Finally, the issue of sustainability of the Olympic Games is identified along with an analysis of the ways in which the concepts of impact are appropriated by the various stakeholders involved with the Olympic Games as they attempt to influence public opinion. Written in an accessible and insightful manner Olympic Event Organization is essential reading for both academics and practitioners alike.

There are four years still to go until the Games take place and the NAO has set out a number of conclusions and recommendations regarding progress, including and covering the following areas: (1) On programme management and risk. The Government Olympic Committee should establish that the various delivery organisations are able to maintain their programme plan and that all arrangements for achieving their goals are up-to-date; also that GOE should align its risk assessments with the overarching programme plan it is setting in place; (2) On budget management. That the assessment criteria for applications to use contingency funds should allow for spend and save use of contingency, that is spending more on one project if it can help avoid delays later in other areas. (3) On evaluation of legacy benefits. The evaluation framework should set baselines against which to measure legacy benefits and disentangle the effects of the Games from other regeneration activities; (4) On management supplier performance. The Olympic Delivery Authority should be able to show by the end of 2008 that the systems for monitoring supplier performance across all objectives are in place and operating effectively; further the Authority needs to communicate to the suppliers the importance of collaborative working and also the Authority should establish whether effective competition is being acheived by suppliers. The NAO's overall conclusion is that preparations for the Games have progressed in important ways. The construction programme is on track; good practice is evident in the way procurement is being handled; the cost estimates have been developed and a clear baseline has been set for assessing costs and progress in the delivery of the venues and associated infrastructures. Book excerpt: Mexico City’s staging of the 1968 Olympic Games should have been a pinnacle in Mexico’s post-revolutionary development: a moment when a nation at ease with itself played proud host to a global celebration of youthful vigour. Representing the Nation argues, however, that from the moment that the city won the bid, the Mexican elite displayed an innate lack of trust in their countrymen. Beautification of the capital city went beyond that expected of a host. It included the removal of undesirables from sight and the sponsorship of public information campaigns designed to teach citizens basic standards of civility and decency. The book’s contention is that these and other measures exposed a chasm between what decades of post-revolutionary socio-cultural reforms had sought to produce, and what members of the elite believed their nation to be. While members of the Organising Committee deeply resented international scepticism of Mexico’s ability to stage the Games, they shared a fear that, with the eyes of the world upon them, their compatriots would reveal Mexico’s aspirations to first world status to be a fraud. Using a detailed analysis of Mexico City’s preparations for the Olympic Games, we show how these tensions manifested themselves in the actions of the Organizing Committee and government authorities. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.
