Book British Propaganda and News Media in the Cold War

Download or read book British Propaganda and News Media in the Cold War written by John Jenks and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the British state's generation, suppression and manipulation of news to further foreign policy goals during the early Cold War. Bribing editors, blackballing "e;unreliable"e; journalists, creating instant media experts through provision of carefully edited "e;inside information"e;, and exploiting the global media system to plant propaganda--disguised as news--around the world: these were all methods used by the British to try to convince the international public of Soviet deceit and criminality and thus gain support for anti-Soviet policies at home and abroad. Britain's shaky international position heightened the importance of propaganda. The Soviets and Americans were investing heavily in propaganda to win the "e;hearts and minds"e; of the world and substitute for increasingly unthinkable nuclear war. The British exploited and enhanced their media power and propaganda expertise to keep up with the superpowers and preserve their own global influence at a time when British economic, political and military power was sharply declining. This activity directly influenced domestic media relations, as officials used British media to launder foreign-bound propaganda and to create the desired images of British "e;public opinion"e; for foreign audiences. By the early 1950s censorship waned but covert propaganda had become addictive. The endless tension of the Cold War normalized what had previously been abnormal state involvement in the media, and led it to use similar tools against Egyptian nationalists, Irish republicans and British leftists. Much more recently, official manipulation of news about Iraq indicates that a behind-the-scenes examination of state propaganda's earlier days is highly relevant. John Jenks draws heavily on recently declassified archival material for this book, especially files of the Foreign Office's anti-Communist Information Research Department (IRD) propaganda agency, and the papers of key media organisations, journalists, politicians and officials. Readers will therefore gain a greater understanding of the depth of the state's power with the media at a time when concerns about propaganda and media manipulation are once again at the fore.

Book Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World

Download or read book Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World written by Daniel C. Hallin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World offers a broad exploration of the conceptual foundations for comparative analysis of media and politics globally. It takes as its point of departure the widely used framework of Hallin and Mancini's Comparing Media Systems, exploring how the concepts and methods of their analysis do and do not prove useful when applied beyond the original focus of their 'most similar systems' design and the West European and North American cases it encompassed. It is intended both to use a wider range of cases to interrogate and clarify the conceptual framework of Comparing Media Systems and to propose new models, concepts and approaches that will be useful for dealing with non-Western media systems and with processes of political transition. Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World covers, among other cases, Brazil, China, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Thailand.

Book British Politics Today

Download or read book British Politics Today written by Bill Jones and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last thirty-five years British politics has undergone something of a revolution: the collapse of strong class allegiance to parties; the recovery of an economy once perceived to be in terminal decline; the near twenty-year rule of the of Tories; and the extraordinary emergence and establishment of the Blairite New Labour Party. Together with these changes we have also seen: the reshaping of the civil service; the establishment of devolved assemblies; the reform of the Lords; the decline of ideology; the apparent crushing of the Conservative Party; and the ubiquity of media management as a tool of political persuasion. This text outlines and contextualizes these major changes, and more.

Book Parliament and the Media

Download or read book Parliament and the Media written by Ralph M. Negrine and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1998 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an analysis of media content from selected periods in 1986 and 1996, this study examines the changing nature of parliamentary and political coverage in Britain, Germany and France. The comparison of the output suggests that although there are differences in political structures and media practices, there are also important similarities, such as a reduction in the length of politicians' sound-bites on television, and changes in the make-up of newspapers which affect the nature of parliamentary and political coverage. The findings are placed within a broader context of a continually changing relationship between political institutions and actors in the media.
