Book Presidential Leadership and the Creation of the American Era

Download or read book Presidential Leadership and the Creation of the American Era written by Joseph S. Nye Jr. and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-31 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How presidents forged the American century This book examines the foreign policy decisions of the presidents who presided over the most critical phases of America's rise to world primacy in the twentieth century, and assesses the effectiveness and ethics of their choices. Joseph Nye, who was ranked as one of Foreign Policy magazine’s 100 Top Global Thinkers, reveals how some presidents tried with varying success to forge a new international order while others sought to manage America’s existing position. The book shows how transformational presidents like Wilson and Reagan changed how America sees the world, but argues that transactional presidents like Eisenhower and the elder Bush were sometimes more effective and ethical. It also draws important lessons for today’s uncertain world, in which presidential decision making is more critical than ever.

Book Transformational Leadership and the Modern Presidency

Download or read book Transformational Leadership and the Modern Presidency written by Andrzej Demczuk and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to analyze the leadership of three presidents: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, as well as to examine the impact of the presidents’ leadership had on the leadership of the advisers they worked with during their presidencies. Transformational leadership, a term first introduced by James MacGregor Burns, describes a process in which “leaders and followers help each other to advance to a higher level of morale and motivation.” In order to measure transformational leadership, Bernard M. Bass’s model - which includes four elements: an idealized influence, inspiring motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual treatment - is applied throughout. It is crucial to conduct an analysis of the relationships between the examined three presidents and their advisers in order to demonstrate if the subordinates excelled in leadership because of the presidents’ leadership skill.

Book The Transformational Leadership Practices of a College President

Download or read book The Transformational Leadership Practices of a College President written by Adejoke Katherine Kassim and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this single instrumental case study was to explore the transformational leadership practices of Dr. James L. Doti, the president emeritus of Chapman University, Orange County, California. The theory that guided this study was the transformational leadership theory by James McGregor Burns and Bernard M. Bass. The central question for the study was, “How did Dr. Doti lead the transformation of Chapman University between 1991–2016?” This study investigated the president’s demonstration of the four components of transformational leadership as identified by Bass: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individual Consideration. The setting was at Chapman University, Orange County, California. The participants included Dr. Doti, board members, senior administrative staff, administrative staff, faculty, and the community of donors, who were part of the transformation of Chapman University during Dr. Doti’s 25-year tenure. Data collection was via interviews, document analysis, and observation of archival videos. Open coding of verbatim transcriptions and triangulation of all sources of data were used to develop themes. Three themes were generated from the data analysis: (a) Dr. Doti’s Compelling Vision, (b) Dr. Doti’s Personal Charisma, and (c) Dr. Doti’s Financial Acumen. Dr. Doti personified transformational leadership. He became the president of Chapman College at a critical time in its history. Dr. Doti cast a new compelling vision for the school which he articulated through a series of five, five-year strategic plans. Aided by his winsome personality, active fundraising, and wise financial management, Dr. Doti led the transformation of Chapman from a sleepy liberal arts college in southern California to a mid-sized university of national stature.

Book Presidents as Transformational Or Transactional Leaders in Higher Education

Download or read book Presidents as Transformational Or Transactional Leaders in Higher Education written by Lloyd Moman Basham and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose of Study: The purpose of the study was primarily concerned with exploring the major issues that are confronting presidents of higher education and if transformational or transactional leadership practices and concepts are warranted in addressing their issues. Procedure: A Delphi technique was used with a broad-based panel of 52 experts who were college or university presidents in the United States. The expert panel provided input to 41 distinct indicators that included a list of concerns, issues, management practices and concepts, and effective leadership qualities. These indicators were force rated through three rounds to determine levels of agreement and consensus determined from medians and interquartile ranges for each indicator. Findings: Final ratings resulted in 25 (61%) of the indicators receiving a median rating of 6 or less, indicating that the panelists agreed or strongly agreed the indicator was applicable, and 23 indicators (56%) reached a level of statistical consensus with an IQR of 2 or less. Conclusions: The researcher reached 10 conclusions from the analyzing the findings. They were 1) the distinction between transactional and transformation leadership practices and concepts in higher education may not be as clear as traditionally believed; 2) university presidents recognize the critical need for a vision and purpose with values; 3) university presidents recognize that establishing an environment of excellence inspires trust; 4) university presidents' major challenge in introducing change is the traditional and historical structures of culture; 5) both transactional and transformational leadership practices will have to be applied to ensure change due to the reluctance of tenured faculty and staff to consider changes due to personal impact; 6) the situation and environment of reduction in state and/or government funding will require critical application of transactional and transformational leadership practices and concepts; 7) president must have the individual quality of commitment; 8) a university president's competency in knowledge, leadership skills, and technical expertise is necessary; and 9) the attribute of authenticity must reside within the university president's acumen.

This book was released on 2009-07-03 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Region: USA, grade: A, Regent University School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship (Regent University School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship), language: English, abstract: In his acceptance speech delivered in Chicago’s Grant Park, newly chosen President-elect Barack Hussein Obama threw down the gauntlet and declared, “A new dawn of American leadership is at hand” (DeFrank, 2008). Indeed, the unprecedented election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America was met with historically high expectations (Ruggeri, 2009). In his first 100 days in office, Obama attempted to fulfill those expectations. Ghattas (2009) wrote: “The breadth of issues he has tackled in this short time is unprecedented, prompting former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to write recently in the Washington Post that ‘the possibility of comprehensive solutions is unprecedented’. There is no guarantee that any of it will lead to success over the next four years, but the new administration is aiming high.” As the new president engaged a large breadth of issues, he had to exercise a broad range of leadership theories and exercises. This paper examines five of leadership models he demonstrated in his first 100 years in office.

Community college scholars and organizations recommended the utilization of transformational leadership by individuals in the community college presidency position. Potential community college presidents (N=656) completed a demographic questionnaire and the Leadership Practices Inventory-SELF (Kouzes & Posner, 2013) to understand their educational, personal, and professional backgrounds; and their utilization of transformational leadership practices. Potential community college presidents' demographics and their utilization of transformational leadership practices are reported. Descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance tests, and independent sample t tests were employed are presented to answer the research questions. There were statistically significant differences in the mean scores on the LPI-SELF based upon level of interest in a community college presidency, institutional location, current position, highest degree earned, and participation in leadership development programs. Conclusions and recommendations include continued exploration of potential community college presidents' preparation and utilization of transformational leadership practices.

Book Presidential Leadership in Political Time

Download or read book Presidential Leadership in Political Time written by Stephen Skowronek and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded third edition, renowned scholar Stephen Skowronek, addresses Donald J. Trump’s presidency. Skowronek’s insights have fundamentally altered our understanding of the American presidency. His “political time” thesis has been particularly influential, revealing how presidents reckon with the work of their predecessors, situate their power within recent political events, and assert their authority in the service of change. A classic widely used in courses on the presidency, Skowronek’s book has greatly expanded our understanding of and debates over the politics of leadership. It clarifies the typical political problems that presidents confront in political time, as well as the likely effects of their working through them, and considers contemporary innovations in our political system that bear on the leadership patterns from the more distant past. Drawing out parallels in the politics of leadership between Andrew Jackson and Franklin Roosevelt and between James Polk and John Kennedy, it develops a new and revealing perspective on the presidential leadership of Clinton, Bush, Obama, and now Trump. In this third edition Skowronek carefully examines the impact of recent developments in government and politics on traditional leadership postures and their enactment, given the current divided state of the American polity, the impact of the twenty-four-hour news cycle, of a more disciplined and homogeneous Republican party, of conservative advocacy of the “unitary theory” of the executive, and of progressive disillusionment with the presidency as an institution. A provocative review of presidential history, Skowronek’s book brims with fresh insights and opens a window on the institution of the executive office and the workings of the American political system as a whole. Intellectually satisfying for scholars, it also provides an accessible volume for students and general readers interested in the American presidency.
