Book Youth and Peaceful Elections in Kenya

Download or read book Youth and Peaceful Elections in Kenya written by Kimani Njogu and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elections provide a tremendous opportunity for national transformation and the pursuit of democratic practice. They can be a moment of national renewal. However, in most of Africa elections are often characterized by violent conflict as politicians seek to capture or maintain power through ethnic mobilization, propaganda and misrepresentation. Considering opportunities offered by information technology especially mobile phones and the discovery of extensive natural resources, Africa has an opportunity to significantly change the lives of ordinary citizens. But this transformation requires that youth are fully 'present' in the political, economic, social and cultural arenas. They will need to marshal their energies and stay focused on the things that are important for the continent of Africa. In the case of Kenya, youth should not wait to be invited to take up political leadership. Instead, they will need to invite themselves to the table and take advantage of the opportunity provided in Constitution and demand accountability and transparency in the conduct of national affairs. This book is part of ongoing work at Twaweza Communications in the pursuit of democracy, peace and justice. Themes covered include youth and leadership; elections and peace; youth as peace makers; family and global values among other topics.

Book The New Constitutional Law of Kenya Principles Government and Human Rights

Download or read book The New Constitutional Law of Kenya Principles Government and Human Rights written by Kiwinda Mbondenyi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012-12-29 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The golden thread that cuts across the various chapters of the book is the emphasis that good constitutions anchor certain tenets that have garnered recognition as hallmarks of democratic dispensation. These hallmarks include the concept of separation of powers; the doctrine of the rule of law; constitutionalism and human rights. These attributes have largely been secured by the 2010 Constitution. Thus, this book is expected to contribute to this new promise by making knowledge on the Constitution accessible through breaking down and contextualising its provisions. It is certain to be useful to law and government students, lawyers, researchers and other persons who seek to understand the new constitutional order.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics written by Nic Cheeseman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenya is one of the most politically dynamic and influential countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, it is known in equal measure as a country that has experienced great highs and tragic lows. In the 1960s and 1970s, Kenya was seen as a ''success story" of development in the periphery, and also led the way in terms of democratic breakthroughs in 2010 when a new constitution devolved power and placed new constraints on the president. However, the country has also made international headlines for the kind of political instability that occurs when electoral violence is expressed along ethnic lines, such as during the "Kenya crisis" of 2007/08 when over 1,000 people lost their lives and almost 700,000 were displaced. The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics explains these developments and many more, drawing together 50 specially commissioned chapters by leading researchers. The chapters they have contributed address a range of essential topics including the legacy of colonial rule, ethnicity, land politics, devolution, the constitution, elections, democracy, foreign aid, the informal economy, civil society, human rights, the International Criminal Court, the growing influence of China, economic policy, electoral violence, and the impact of mobile phone technology. In addition to covering some of the most important debates about Kenyan politics, the volume provides an insightful overview of Kenyan history from 1930 to the present day and features a set of chapters that review the impact of devolution on regional politics in every part of the country.

Book Kenyas Past as Prologue

Download or read book Kenyas Past as Prologue written by Marie-Aude Fouere and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the run-up to Kenyas 2013 general elections, crucial political and civic questions were raised. Could past mistakes, especially political and ethnic-related violence, be avoided this time round? Would the spectre of the 2007 post-electoral violence positively or negatively affect debates and voting? How would politicians, electoral bodies such as the IEBC, the Kenyan civil society, and the international community weigh in on the elections? More generally, would the 2013 elections bear witness to the building up of an electoral culture in Kenya, characterized by free and fair elections, or would it show that voting is still weakened by political malpractices, partisan opinions and emotional reactions? Would Kenyas past be inescapable or would it prepare the scene for a new political order? Kenyas Past as Prologue adopts a multidisciplinary perspective mainly built upon field-based ethnography and a selection of case studies to answer these questions. Under the leadership of the French Institute for Research in Africa (Institut francais de recherche en Afrique, IFRA), political scientists, historians and anthropologists explore various aspects of the electoral process to contribute in-depth analyses of the last elections. They highlight the structural factors underlying election and voting in Kenya including the political system, culture and political transition. They also interrogate the short-term trends and issues that influence the new political order. The book provides insight into specific case studies, situations and contexts, thus bringing nuances and diversity into focus to better assess Kenyas evolving electoral democracy.

Book Separation of Powers in African Constitutionalism

Download or read book Separation of Powers in African Constitutionalism written by Charles M. Fombad and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new series Stellenbosch Handbooks in African Constitutional Law will engage with contemporary issues of constitutionalism in Africa, filling a notable gap in African comparative constitutional law. Separation of Powers in African Constitutionalism is the first in the series, examining one of the critical measures introduced by African constitutional designers in their attempts to entrench an ethos of constitutionalism on the continent. Taking a critical look at the different ways in which attempts have been made to separate the different branches of government, the Handbook examines the impact this is having on transparent and accountable governance. Beginning with an overview of constitutionalism in Africa and the different influences on modern African constitutional developments, it looks at the relationship between the legislature and the executive as well as the relationship between the judiciary and the political branches. Despite differences in approaches between the different constitutional cultures that have influenced developments in Africa, there remain common problems. One of these problems is the constant friction in the relationship between the three branches and the resurgent threats of authoritarianism which clearly suggest that there remain serious problems in both constitutional design and implementation. The book also studies the increasing role being played by independent constitutional institutions and how they complement the checks and balances associated with the traditional three branches of government.

Book Democracy Challenged in the 2022 Presidential Succession in Kenya

Download or read book Democracy Challenged in the 2022 Presidential Succession in Kenya written by Jeffrey Steeves and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of the 2022 presidential succession in Kenya examines the process’ evolution over time, not just in the stages closest to the presidential election. The live speeches, statements, press conferences, and rallies of the key actors are featured and analysed carefully. In Kenya, major television stations and regional stations are highly developed and offer a wealth of research opportunities. The book analyses the Roadside Rallies, which are a unique feature of Kenyan political campaigns in the face of State repression. An intense struggle took place leading up to the 2022 election. What made this succession special was the determination of the incumbent president to shape the succession to his will. In effect, the 2022 succession revealed the fault lines in the Kenya political class and the lengths an incumbent will go to assert his dominance over the succession process. The book explores the tools utilised by an Imperial President to circumvent legal and constitutional restrictions. For those interested in democracy in Africa, this study illustrates the very real barriers to its fulfillment.
