Book The Philippine Presidency

Download or read book The Philippine Presidency written by Udo Moses Williams and published by . This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, The Philippine Presidency, is a comparative study of four successive presidents between 1965 and 2001. The period coincides with two People Power Revolutions. The first brought to power in 1986 President Corazon Aquino, the wife of the assassinated opposition leader, Benigno "Ninoy" S. Aquino. The second removed President Joseph Estrada from office in 2001. In the intervening period served President Fidel Ramos, who complemented Aquino's efforts to lead the Philippines into social and economic reform, and from the economic doldrums of the years under President Ferdinand Marcos to prosperity. This book comparatively examines the four successive presidencies to expose discernible patterns of leadership in the presidents' grapple to attain and retain power, to deal with social and economic ills, and to suppress multifarious rebellions. The relevant constitutions (1935, 1973, and 1987) within the period were compared to identify priority issues of the administrations and provisions that applied to the presidents during their tenures. Marcos was seen as having manipulated the constitutional provisions of martial law to retain power. The attempt to impeach Estrada stalemated, and the added pressure from the People Power Revolution removed him from office. On the whole, it is concluded that the personal attributes of the presidents were the most important factors (variables) in explaining state postures during the respective tenures of the four successive presidents of the Philippines examined here.

Book Leadership

Download or read book Leadership written by Joan Marques and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership argues that finding satisfaction and sanity at work requires the development of both ambition and acceptance. While these traits seem to be at odds with one another, Marques shows that each one has positive and negative elements and the trick is balancing the useful aspects of each to maximize success. The book defines this balance and its relationship to success, featuring real-world examples, useful diagrams, and cases to encourage students to reflect on how to apply these principles to their own lives. Laying the foundation for understanding the need to develop both ambition and acceptance, and providing the context for what performance means in modern times, Marques presents a framework for growing in one’s own career. Students learn how to evaluate competing impulses, and how to make critical decisions to define career success. Students of career development, leadership and organizational behavior classes will appreciate its grounded, engaging writing style.

Book Globalization Democratization and Asian Leadership

Download or read book Globalization Democratization and Asian Leadership written by Vincent Kelly Pollard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foreign policies of presidents, prime ministers and their foreign secretaries can be influenced by the preferences of domestic and international nongovernmental actors, as well as those of other governments. Representative democracy, media power, citizen activism and the globalization of politics and telecommunications, for example, have accelerated changes in the sharing of power. This book focuses on the Philippines and Japan where, willingly and unwillingly, foreign policy executives share power with individuals and groups inside and outside of government bureaucracies and their societies. The book retells the foreign policy narratives of regional cooperation, military relations and official development assistance (foreign aid), revealing how executive foreign policy makers and civil society organizations share power - and succeed or fail - in a globalizing, democratizing world. A variety of published, unpublished and declassified sources provide journalists, scholars, government practitioners and global citizens with a sophisticated understanding of the domestic politics of foreign policy making, as well as its intergovernmental and transnational side.

Book The Woman President

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ramona Vijeyarasa
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2022-07-21
  • ISBN : 0192848917
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book The Woman President written by Ramona Vijeyarasa and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too much attention is paid to the absence of women leaders around the world rather than their presence, leaving a gap in our understanding of the difference women leaders make on the lives of fellow women. The Woman President presents a unique comparative study of women's leadership and the law, offering new ways for understanding the impact of female presidential leadership on women's everyday lives by analysing the legal legacies of four women presidents: Corazon Aquino (1986-1992), Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (2001-2010), Megawati Sukarnoputri (2001-2004), and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga (1994-2005). It uses a new and innovative methodology, the Gender Legislative Index, to score laws enacted during these four tenures from a women's rights perspective. The findings challenge and expand our understanding of what constitutes a woman's issue, bringing within its gendered analysis labour law reform, democracy, anti-corruption, poverty-alleviation, and pro-peace interventions, alongside more oft-considered terrain such as gender-based violence, reproductive rights, gender equality quotas, and women's rights at work. This book also offers important insights into the institutional and social mechanisms that enable women leaders to lead for women, including women's movements and global networks of women presidents and prime ministers. The words of women leaders themselves-both from personal interviews and speeches-bring depth to the assessments and conclusions drawn. The Woman President offers new tools and sharpens old ones to provide an essential comparative contribution to our knowledge about the dynamics and impact of female presidencies, drawing from the realities of the Asia region.
