Book excerpt: Excerpt from President's Report for the Year Ending 30th June, 1908 On the other hand if the University expects productive work from its staff, and the effective teaching which depends upon independent study and investigation, it must endeavour to prevent the professors from being over burdened with instruction. It should also be borne in mind that members of our comparatively small staff in Arts are responsible for duplicate lectures at Trinity, for the lectures to teachers in the city during the winter, and for the Summer Session. The temptation is natural to solve these difficulties in the easiest way by adding junior members to the staff. Undoubtedly this may be up to a certain proportion quite wise, but the efficiency of a university will be measured in part by the Opportunity afforded to the average student of coming under the influence of experienced teachers. Our aim therefore must be to strengthen the departments, up to the limit of our ability, with men of professorial rank or of mature experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from President's Report for the Year Ending 30th June, 1920 Recognition of the tendencies and the probable demands of the country has during the year brought various temporary changes in curriculum, which it is expected will become fixed next year after further investigation and trial. Apart from those changes within departmental scope, there have been various additions with a view to broadening the nature of the engineering education not only to better fit graduates for entering wider fields of the engineering profession, but to provide them with that broader education so essential in all professions. The crowd-ed condition which these large numbers created in lecture rooms and laboratories has fully justified the new building which is now in course of erection for the Electrical Engineering and Applied Mechanics Departments, and it is hoped that this may be available for the coming year. But even with this the urgency will still exist for further accommodation in the next and succeeding years, for it is now evident that the academic year 1920-21 will find upwards of a thousand students registered in this Faculty with the prospect 'of still more in the following years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from President's Report: For the Year Ending 30th June, 1934 I submit herewith a survey of the academic activities of the University for the year ending the 30th'of June, 1934. In this report only certain general aspects of the work are chosen; more detailed and comprehensive statements are found in the special reports from Faculties and Departments. Even the broadest survey of our situation. Reveals the variety and complexity of our task and withal the underlying unity of aim and spirit. Our organisation into Faculties, Colleges, and Departments makes possible much individuality of educational effort within a common academic family. The original aims of this University were, among others, to provide higher education for a portion of the community, to give adequate training for those who intended to enter professional life, to inculcate a spirit of loyalty to King and country and of sound morality and religion. These aims. Have been attained perhaps in ways broader and deeper than the founders could foresee. For many decades the university's work has been carried on to further the idea that in a democratic community it is essential that the citizen body be educated, en lightened, interested and honest. Beyond all other forms of government a democracy demands and must supply wide educational opportunity to its people, young and old. In providing this opportunity our University is seeking to render its measure of national service. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
