To all whose information, advice, and encouragement were helpful in the production of The Second Admiral, a Life of David Dixon Porter, 1813-1893, and of Gideon Welles: Lincoln's Navy Department, the writer is happy again to acknowledge grati tude, for these earlier books were spadework for the present one. Particularly is he grateful to Charles Lee Lewis, Professor Emeritus, U. S. Naval Academy, his first mentor in the field of naval history, and to Professor Louis H Bolander, librarian of the U. S. Naval Academy, retired, whose wide knowledge and cheerful assistance in research have informed many pages in this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, and Martyrdom of Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the United States; And Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States In compiling this selection of Lincoln's works, I have been guided by one principle or purpose. I have chosen those writ ings which illustrate Lincoln's political and social philosophy and his views on the great issues of his day. My attempt has been to present Lincoln the philosopher of democracy. I have not tried to present the complete Lincoln. I have taken these selections from published collections of Lincoln's works. For the most part, I have reproduced the speeches and letters as they are given in these earlier works, including punctuation and spelling. The first editors of Lin coln's works, John G. Nicolay and John Hay, edited Lincoln to achieve a formal correctness. The changes they made were of a minor nature and did no violence to Lincoln's meaning. I have taken Nicolay and Hay as the closest possible approach to the original documents. Wherever I have omitted a portion of a speech or a letter, I have indicated that omission by asterisks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's in TownHe served for the duration of the war, and was mustered out on July 10, 1832, at White Water, on the Rock river in Wisconsin. With a friend he made his way back to Sangamon county on foot and by canoe, for his horse had been lost in service. These are the brief facts of Lincoln's only service in the armed forces of the United States, except when he commanded the armies and navy of the United States in the Civil war.He looked deep into the heart of the American volunteer in those three brief months of service from April to July 1832. He learned their thoughts, learned their habits, learned to command them, learned to work and march and fight with them, these men who have always been the backbone of American armed forces. The knowledge was priceless when it came to commanding hundreds of thousands of the sons and grandsons of these same types of volunteers in the Civil war.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glimpse of the United States Military Telegraph Corps, and of Abraham Lincoln The golden dream of empire, which had haunted the waking and sleeping moments of the cultivated aristocratic ruling class of the Gulf States, and of the land barons of South Carolina and Georgia, aided and abetted by impracticable legislation and fanatical expressions of latitudinarian doctrines of government by agitators throughout the Northern States, had at last brought about that most deplorable of all conflicts - civil war. It was a serious hour for the principles of self-government by the people as represented by the Constitution of the great American Republic. Sumter had been fired upon, and the emblem of our nationality was lowered at the demand of revolting citizens. In this crisis, President Lincoln called upon the various States for 75,000 men to restore the authority of the National Government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed history of one week during the Civil War in which the American president assumed control of the nation’s military. One rainy evening in May, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln boarded the revenue cutter Miami and sailed to Fort Monroe in Hampton Roads, Virginia. There, for the first and only time in our country’s history, a sitting president assumed direct control of armed forces to launch a military campaign. In Lincoln Takes Command, author Steve Norderdetails this exciting, little-known week in Civil War history. Lincoln recognized the strategic possibilities offered by Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan’s ongoing Peninsula Campaign and the importance of seizing Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the Gosport Navy Yard. For five days, the president spent time on sea and land, studied maps, spoke with military leaders, suggested actions, and issued direct orders to subordinate commanders. He helped set in motion many events, including the naval bombardment of a Confederate fort, the sailing of Union ships up the James River toward the enemy capital, an amphibious landing of Union soldiers followed by an overland march that expedited the capture of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the navy yard, and the destruction of the Rebel ironclad CSS Virginia. The president returned to Washington in triumph, with some urging him to assume direct command of the nation’s field armies. The week discussed in Lincoln Takes Command has never been as heavily researched or told in such fine detail. The successes that crowned Lincoln’s short time in Hampton Roads offered him a better understanding of, and more confidence in, his ability to see what needed to be accomplished. This insight helped sustain him through the rest of the war.
