Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art interprets the visible world. Physics charts its unseen workings. The two realms seem completely opposed. But consider that both strive to reveal truths for which there are no words––with physicists using the language of mathematics and artists using visual images. In Art & Physics, Leonard Shlain tracks their breakthroughs side by side throughout history to reveal an astonishing correlation of visions. From the classical Greek sculptors to Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, and from Aristotle to Einstein, artists have foreshadowed the discoveries of scientists, such as when Monet and Cezanne intuited the coming upheaval in physics that Einstein would initiate. In this lively and colorful narrative, Leonard Shlain explores how artistic breakthroughs could have prefigured the visionary insights of physicists on so many occasions throughout history. Provicative and original, Art & Physics is a seamless integration of the romance of art and the drama of science––and an exhilarating history of ideas.

Book Learning the Traditional Art of Food Preservation Technical Tips on Home Preserving

Download or read book Learning the Traditional Art of Food Preservation Technical Tips on Home Preserving written by Dueep Jyot Singh and published by Mendon Cottage Books. This book was released on 2016-05-08 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Preservation Equipment Making a Drawstring Muslin Bag Making Your Own Jam Jar Covers How to Sterilize Jars Ingredients For Starting Pectin Rich Fruit Sugar Traditional Jam Making Apricot Jam Strawberry Jam Spices in your Jams Marmalade Chutneys Traditional Tomato Chutney Appendix Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction I was just browsing on the Internet, when I reached a site, where there was a buildup about organic natural foods being preserved and sold all over the world, by just one particular cottage industry somewhere in a village up there in the mountains in the East. It seems that a lady settled there, from France, and looked at all the natural resources present right at hand – especially all the fresh fruit, and honey, and spices and willing hands, which would be willing to earn just this bit of extra money in order to keep the wolves away from their doors. And so a brand-new cottage industry was born, especially when the jams, pickles, conserves, and other preserved foods were finger licking good. Nowadays, more and more people are getting really interested in getting back to nature, and instead of buying their jams and pickles off the nearest supermarket shelves, they are going to the kitchens and gardens and relearning one of the oldest traditional preservation skills known to man. This book is going to give you plenty of information on how you can do your own preserving, especially marmalades, jams, chutneys, and other foods, which you can preserve for a long time, with a little bit of know-how. However, the reason why many of us do not bother to do any sort of preserving is because we are under the impression that this means a whole day sweating in front of the stove in a hot kitchen, especially when the stuff is so sticky, and I think this idea has come down from some traditional medieval kitchen, where the cooks and the slaves kept slaving over hot stoves to make jams for the winter. This is so not true today. You are going to be surprised to know that it takes really little effort to make jams, jellies, and other preserved foods and you do not even have to have special equipment for these items. You are not making them professionally, are you? They are just for home consumption. So why are you worried about huge mechanical equipment, especially when it is specialist equipment, very particular about the temperature, quantity of ingredients, quantity of fillers, quantity of chemical preservatives and all that stuff, which goes into the making of expensive brand names without which we do not suppose any of our breakfasts are complete?

Book Living Matter

  • Pages : 528 pages

Download or read book Living Matter written by Rachel Rivenc and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative volume is the first to address the conservation of contemporary art incorporating biological materials such as plants, foods, bodily fluids, or genetically engineered organisms. Eggshells, flowers, onion peels, sponge cake, dried bread, breast milk, bacteria, living organisms—these are just a few of the biological materials that contemporary artists are using to make art. But how can works made from such perishable ingredients be preserved? And what logistical, ethical, and conceptual dilemmas might be posed by doing so? Because they are prone to rapid decay, even complete disappearance, biological materials used in art pose a range of unique conservation challenges. This groundbreaking book probes the issues associated with displaying, collecting, and preserving these unique works of art. The twenty-four papers from the conference present a range of case studies, prominently featuring artists’ perspectives, as well as conceptual discussions, thereby affording a comprehensive and richly detailed overview of current thinking and practices on this topic. Living Matter is the first publication to explore broadly the role of biological materials in the creative process and present a variety of possible approaches to their preservation. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at www.getty.edu/publications/living-matter/ and includes videos and zoomable illustrations. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book.

Book Light at the Edge of the World

Download or read book Light at the Edge of the World written by Wade Davis and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 30 years, renowned anthropologist Wade Davis has traveled the globe, studying the mysteries of sacred plants and celebrating the world’s traditional cultures. His passion as an ethnobotanist has brought him to the very center of indigenous life in places as remote and diverse as the Canadian Arctic, the deserts of North Africa, the rain forests of Borneo, the mountains of Tibet, and the surreal cultural landscape of Haiti. In Light at the Edge of the World, Davis explores the idea that these distinct cultures represent unique visions of life itself and have much to teach the rest of the world about different ways of living and thinking. As he investigates the dark undercurrents tearing people from their past and propelling them into an uncertain future, Davis reiterates that the threats faced by indigenous cultures endanger and diminish all cultures.

  • Pages : 446 pages

Download or read book Myanmar written by Adam Simpson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a sophisticated, yet accessible, overview of the key political, economic and social challenges facing contemporary Myanmar and explains the complex historical and ethnic dynamics that have shaped the country. With clear and incisive contributions from the world’s leading Myanmar scholars, this book assesses the policies and political reforms that have provoked contestation in Myanmar’s recent history and driven both economic and social change. In this context, questions of economic ownership and control and the distribution of natural resources are shown to be deeply informed by long-standing fractures among ethnic and civil-military relations. The chapters analyse the key issues that constrain or expedite societal development in Myanmar and place recent events of national and international significance in the context of its complex history and social relations. In doing so, the book demonstrates that ethnic and cultural diversity is at the core of Myanmar’s society and heavily influences all aspects of life in the country. Filling a gap in the market, this research textbook and primer will be of interest to upper undergraduates, postgraduates and scholars of Southeast Asian politics, economics and society and to journalists and professionals working within governments, companies and other organisations.
