Book Preserving on Paper

Download or read book Preserving on Paper written by Kristine Kowalchuk and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apricot wine and stewed calf’s head, melancholy medicine and "ointment of roses." Welcome to the cookbook Shakespeare would have recognized. Preserving on Paper is a critical edition of three seventeenth-century receipt books–handwritten manuals that included a combination of culinary recipes, medical remedies, and household tips which documented the work of women at home. Kristine Kowalchuk argues that receipt books served as a form of folk writing, where knowledge was shared and passed between generations. These texts played an important role in the history of women’s writing and literacy and contributed greatly to issues of authorship, authority, and book history. Kowalchuk’s revelatory interdisciplinary study offers unique insights into early modern women’s writings and the original sharing economy.

Book The Method and Principles of Complementary Reflection in and Beyond African Philosophy

Download or read book The Method and Principles of Complementary Reflection in and Beyond African Philosophy written by Innocent Asouzu and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions relating to types of philosophical trends within African philosophy can be very decisive for any idea of African philosophy. In this strikingly novel approach to African Philosophy, the author explores a complementary philosophical trend that goes back to those he calls anonymous traditional African philosophers. Based on their thoughts, he articulates a distinctive variant of the principles, method and imperative of complementarity (Ibu anyi danda) around which he builds his system. He anchors his reflection on such ambient concepts as the joy of being (jide k' iji), fragmentation, wholeness, and future reference.

Book Talking to Our Selves

Download or read book Talking to Our Selves written by John M. Doris and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John M. Doris presents a new account of agency and responsibility, which reconciles our understanding of ourselves as moral agents with psychological research on the unconscious mind. Much philosophical theorizing maintains that the exercise of morally responsible agency consists in judgment and behavior ordered by accurate reflection. On such theories, when human beings are able to direct their lives in the manner philosophers have dignified with the honorific 'agency', it's because they know what they're doing, and why they're doing it. This understanding is compromised by quantities of psychological research on unconscious processing, which suggests that accurate reflection is distressingly uncommon; very often behavior is ordered by surprisingly inaccurate self-awareness. Thus, if agency requires accurate reflection, people seldom exercise agency, and skepticism about agency threatens. To counter the skeptical threat, John M. Doris proposes an alternative theory that requires neither reflection nor accurate self-awareness: he identifies a dialogic form of agency where self-direction is facilitated by exchange of the rationalizations with which people explain and justify themselves to one another. The result is a stoutly interdisciplinary theory sensitive to both what human beings are like—creatures with opaque and unruly psychologies-and what they need: an account of agency sufficient to support a practice of moral responsibility.

He includes personal stories about his life and that of his brother, sisters and children threaded together by the patriarchs of the family. The basic outline of the book is around the mnemonic "F A T H E R", how God is Faithful, Atonement, Teacher, Helper, Encourager and Rewarder. Frank further tells how God introduced Spiritual Fathers to take him to the next level of maturity and fullness of life, when he was unable to get there and needed additional help. Frank is a professional in business of over 25 years, in C-level positions in public and private companies, small and large. He professes that his faith in Jesus Christ and exposure to God's goodness lead him in his daily life choices and business choices. His professional background has included leading business turnarounds, that have called upon every ounce of spiritual insight available to him by God's Holy Spirit. He is currently putting the finishing touches on, "Values in Leadership", a book that demonstrates the representative character of God's Spirit in business life and how those without the values in God's Spirit, create a "Crisis of Confidence" due to a life absent HIS values. Frank's third book will be "Twelve Eyes in the Man of God."

Book A Korean Confucian Way of Life and Thought

Download or read book A Korean Confucian Way of Life and Thought written by Edward Y. J. Chung and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yi Hwang (1501–1570)—best known by his literary name, T’oegye—is one of the most eminent thinkers in the history of East Asian philosophy and religion. His Chasŏngnok (Record of self-reflection) is a superb Korean Neo-Confucian text: an eloquent collection of twenty-two scholarly letters and four essays written to his close disciples and junior colleagues. These were carefully selected by T’oegye himself after self-reflecting (chasŏng) on his practice of personal cultivation. The Chasŏngnok continuously guided T’oegye and inspired others on the true Confucian way (including leading Neo-Confucians in Tokugawa Japan) while it criticized Buddhism and Daoism. Its philosophical merit rivals T’oegye’s monumental Sŏnghak sipto (Ten diagrams on sage learning) and “Four-Seven Debate Letters”; however, as a testament of T’oegye’s character, scholarship, and teaching, the Chasŏngnok is of greater interest. The work engages with his holistic knowledge and experience of self-cultivation by articulating textual and historical material on various key doctrines and ideas. It is an inspiring practical guide that reveals the depth of T’oegye’s learning and spirituality. The present volume offers a fully annotated translation of the Chasŏngnok. Following a groundbreaking discussion of T’oegye’s life and ideas according to the Chasŏngnok and his other major writings, it presents the core of his thought in six interrelated sections: “Philosophy of Principle,” “Human Nature and Emotions,” “Against Buddhism and Daoism,” “True Learning,” “Self-Cultivation,” and “Reverence and Spiritual Cultivation.” The bibliography offers a current catalogue of primary sources and modern works in Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and English. As the first comprehensive study of the Chasŏngnok, this book is a welcome addition to current literature on Korean classics and East Asian philosophy and religion. By presenting T’oegye’s thought-provoking contributions, it sheds new light on the vitality of Confucian wisdom, thereby affording scholars and students with an excellent primary source for East Asian studies in general and Confucian studies in particular.

Book excerpt: The end of the Realm has come, and I—I am its destroyer. Vi’eri finds herself at the end of time. The death of her realm. War looms, and the people of the world rally behind her, for they have but two options: Fight or die. Alone and afraid, she hides herself from the others, seeking solitude from their spiteful glares. However, one day, a young human asks her to tell him a tale. A tale from her past. The tale of how she’d brought this destruction upon them. Are the answers she seeks buried deep in her past? Hidden behind a lifetime of pain? Or is this truly to be the end of all? Epic in feel and scale, told from a first-person perspective, Reflection is a must read for those who are fans of Robin Hobb's The Assassin's Apprentice or Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind.

Book Preserving Reflections of Ourselves

Download or read book Preserving Reflections of Ourselves written by and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While museums are very good at collecting, preserving, documenting, and interpreting the histories of our communities, we have not done a very good job with our own histories. No comprehensive publication holistically examines the development of museums in Alaska, let alone looks critically at the “big three” (Alaska State Museums, University of Alaska Museum of the North, and the Anchorage Museum) with a goal of establishing a connection between the historical context, the individuals who shaped those museums, and the institutions’ current states of being. This dissertation uses the academic fields of history, museology, and ethnography to discover and analyze how we find ourselves in the current state, while offering suggestions for moving ahead in a positive way. In this dissertation I examine the past, present, and future of Alaska’s museums. I do this by first assembling a more complete history of the “big three” using archival primary sources, published literature, and interviews. Second, I examine the current state of museums with their strengths and challenges through a combination of literature review, interviews, surveys, and participant observation. Finally, I consider the way Alaska’s museums might respond to the changes facing museums around the world by reflecting on current museological literature, current events, and examining two case studies based on my work at the University of Alaska Museum of the North located on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Book Theological Reflection and Education for Ministry

Download or read book Theological Reflection and Education for Ministry written by John E. Paver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major and continuing problem for theological education and the practice of Christian ministry is how to best achieve a genuine integration between theory and practice, theology and experience. The key claim of this book is that theological reflection, beginning with experience, is a method of integration and that pastoral supervision is a vehicle for theological reflection. In establishing this claim, John Paver demonstrates that the model and method have potential to be a catalyst for reform within theological colleges and seminaries. Three different theological reflection models are developed and critiqued in this book, and their capacity to be developed in particular contexts is explored. This book does not stop at ministry, cultural and personal integration, but is bold enough to make recommendations for structural integration within the theological institution.
