Book Development of Commercial Wood Preservatives

Download or read book Development of Commercial Wood Preservatives written by Tor P. Schultz and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood products used in exterior applications must be protected against biodeterioration. Traditionally, wood products used CCA or the older inexpensive organic biocides, but environmental, disposal and governmental regulations have resulted in a rapid and dramatic worldwide shift. This book covers the many steps involved in developing a wood preservative and gives overviews on modified wood, wood deterioration, worldwide trends in wood protections, and mold in homes.

Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price Wood preservatives are generally grouped into two categories: preservatives used for in-place field (remedial)treatment and preservatives used for pressure treatments.A limitation of in-place treatments is that they cannot beforced deeply into the wood under pressure. However, theycan be applied into the center of large wooden membersvia treatment holes. These preservatives may be availableas liquids, rods, or pastes. Pressure-treated wood has muchdeeper and more uniform preservative penetration thanwood treated with other methods. The type of pressuretreated wood is often dependent on the requirements of thespecific application. To guide selection of pressure-treatedwood, the American Wood Protection Association developedUse Category System standards. Other preservative characteristics, such as color, odor, and surface oiliness may alsobe relevant. Guidelines for selection and application of fieldtreatments and for selection and specification of pressure-treated wood are provided in this document. Book The Chemistry of Wood Preservation

Download or read book The Chemistry of Wood Preservation written by R Thompson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effective and lasting treatment of wood against insect and fungal attack grows in importance as forestry reserves decline and as cost increases feed through to the building trade and other timber users. At the same time, environmental pressures bear ever more heavily on the types of chemicals and processes employed in the preservation industry. This book records the proceedings of an international meeting arranged to address such issues. The 15 principal chapters are based upon papers by invited experts to a combined audience of preservation practitioners and non-specialists. The chapter sequence follows the logical pattern of the conference, beginning with a review of the biological threats to be contended. There follow historical and state-of-the-art accounts of aqueous, organic solvent and non-liquid treatment processes. Preservatives increasingly must meet international product and environmental standards, which along with the related test, analytical and quality control procedures, are described and referenced. Contributors from the wood preservation industry address a range of needs associated with cost, safety and performance efficacy, not neglecting a search for a better understanding of the finer chemical mechanisms involved. Remaining problems are outlined in strategies for further research and development. - Address a range of needs associated with cost, safety and performance efficacy - Problems are outlined in strategies for further research and development

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic Council of Ministers, the BAT Group under the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production, has requested the consultant to prepare a report on Best Available Techniques (BAT) in wood preservation with chemicals in the Nordic countries. The Nordic wood preserving industry produces around 2.1 million m³ of impregnated wood per year, which is about one third of the total supply of pressure-treated wood in Europe. This report describes the present status of the used technologies, their emissions and impacts on the environment and technologies that can be considered BAT. The report will also be used as an input from the Nordic countries to the EU process under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) for preparation of the BAT Reference Document for preservation of wood and wood products with chemicals (WPC BREF) which is foreseen to start in 2014.

Book INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABLE WOOD PRESERVATIVES FROM PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY BYPRODUCT

Download or read book INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABLE WOOD PRESERVATIVES FROM PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY BYPRODUCT written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : In the modern forest industry, the need for bio-based, renewable, and environmentally-benign wood preservatives is increasing. Preservatives are used to prevent or limit decay and there has been an increasing interest in developing wood preservatives from renewable materials. To support the need for bio-based, environmentally-friendly preservatives, this work employed kraft lignin as a raw material to produce a novel bio-based wood preservative. For the first project, a statistical design of experiments approach in Minitab® was used to study how fractionation process variables during acid precipitation of lignin influence the lignin mass yield and characteristics. After precipitating lignin from black liquor, we found a positive correlation between temperature, mass yield, molecular weight and dark coloration. For pH

Book Environmental Impacts of Traditional and Innovative Forest based Bioproducts

Download or read book Environmental Impacts of Traditional and Innovative Forest based Bioproducts written by Andreja Kutnar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of traditional and innovative forest-based bioproducts, from pulp and paper, wood-based composites and wood fuels to chemicals and fiber-based composites. The descriptions of different types of forest-based bioproducts are supplemented by the environmental impacts involved in their processing, use, and end-of-life phase. Further, the possibility of reusing, recycling and upgrading bioproducts at the end of their projected life cycle is discussed. As the intensity of demand for forest biomass is currently changing, forest-based industries need to respond with innovative products, business models, marketing and management. As such, the book concludes with a chapter on the bioproducts business and these products’ role in bioeconomies.

Book Wood Protection and Preservation

Download or read book Wood Protection and Preservation written by Christian Brischke and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood is an advantageous building material in many respects, but it is biodegradable and therefore requires protection when used in highly hazardous applications. This Special Issue comprises 19 papers by authors from 14 countries in Asia, North America and Europe. They represent a wide range of aspects related to wood protection and wood preservation, and give timely examples of research activities that can be observed around the globe. Several authors reported on the processes of thermal modification and different chemical wood modification techniques, which are among the latest alternative wood protection methods without the use of biocides. New preservatives and assessment methods of preservative-treated wood products are presented, as well as studies on the natural durability of wood, fire-retardant treated wood, the effect of concrete on wood durability and different novel surface modification techniques using plasma. In addition to biological durability, the mechanical properties, moisture performance, bonding properties, weathering stability and the corrosiveness of differently treated wood are investigated and reported within this Special Issue. Examples of research on fungal biology, service life planning with wood and test methodology are also included and complete the Special Issue.
