Book Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries

Download or read book Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries written by Jeanne M. Drewes and published by Libraries Unlimited. This book was released on 1997-05-21 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other book provides such a comprehensive approach to educating library customers and staff in the preservation of library materials. Over 35 case studies provide innovative programs and strategies for providing preservation education initiatives throughout the library. The various types of materials collected paired with the variety of patrons requires a full spectrum of approaches. Going on the assumption that much damage is caused by unknowing misuse, this professional reference gives academic, school, and public library staff as well as special collections staff, a solid approach for designing, implementing and evaluating formal and informal preservation educational programs. As collections deteriorate and library budgets shrink, the longevity of collections becomes an increasingly important issue. To minimize harm to collections, librarians need to emphasize the importance of preservation and proper handling. This professional reference explains how to create, implement and evaluate formal and informal preservation education programs in school, public, academic, and special collections. Chapters are written by contributors from a wide range of positions in librarianship and academia. Building on the assumption that most misuse is because of misunderstanding or lack of understanding, much attention is given to reaching all types of patrons and changing attitudes. Because preservation largely depends on the attitude of patrons, much attention is given to reaching all types of patrons. Informing adults to avoid misuse and teaching children to respect books and to handle them carefully are two different methods. Visual messages using posters, bookmarks, and signs to educate can help prevent damage. Library staff, on the other hand, benefit from training programs, which can effectively include tests and videos. Users of rare and archival materials can be informed through brochures, and one-on-one interaction with librarians. The volume includes over 35 illustrative case studies, and it concludes with an extensive bibliography and videography.

Book Biocultural Diversity Conservation

Download or read book Biocultural Diversity Conservation written by Luisa Maffi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of biocultural diversity is emerging as a dynamic, integrative approach to understanding the links between nature and culture and the interrelationships between humans and the environment at scales from the global to the local. Its multifaceted contributions have ranged from theoretical elaborations, to mappings of the overlapping distributions of biological and cultural diversity, to the development of indicators as tools to measure, assess, and monitor the state and trends of biocultural diversity, to on-the-ground implementation in field projects. This book is a unique compendium and analysis of projects from all around the world that take an integrated biocultural approach to sustaining cultures and biodiversity. The 45 projects reviewed exemplify a new focus in conservation: this is based on the emerging realization that protecting and restoring biodiversity and maintaining and revitalizing cultural diversity and cultural vitality are intimately, indeed inextricably, interrelated. Book Advanced Digital Preservation

Download or read book Advanced Digital Preservation written by David Giaretta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing recognition of the need to address the fragility of digital information, on which our society heavily depends for smooth operation in all aspects of daily life. This has been discussed in many books and articles on digital preservation, so why is there a need for yet one more? Because, for the most part, those other publications focus on documents, images and webpages – objects that are normally rendered to be simply displayed by software to a human viewer. Yet there are clearly many more types of digital objects that may need to be preserved, such as databases, scientific data and software itself. David Giaretta, Director of the Alliance for Permanent Access, and his contributors explain why the tools and techniques used for preserving rendered objects are inadequate for all these other types of digital objects, and they provide the concepts, techniques and tools that are needed. The book is structured in three parts. The first part is on theory, i.e., the concepts and techniques that are essential for preserving digitally encoded information. The second part then shows practice, i.e., the use and validation of these tools and techniques. Finally, the third part concludes by addressing how to judge whether money is being well spent, in terms of effectiveness and cost sharing. Various examples of digital objects from many sources are used to explain the tools and techniques presented. The presentation style mainly aims at practitioners in libraries, archives and industry who are either directly responsible for preservation or who need to prepare for audits of their archives. Researchers in digital preservation and developers of preservation tools and techniques will also find valuable practical information here. Researchers creating digitally encoded information of all kinds will also need to be aware of these topics so that they can help to ensure that their data is usable and can be valued by others now and in the future. To further assist the reader, the book is supported by many hours of videos and presentations from the CASPAR project and by a set of open source software.

Book excerpt: The collection and preservation of insects, both for scientific study and as an artform, has a long and interesting history. The practice was particularly popular throughout Europe and flourished in the Victorian era. During the early nineteenth century, a period of unprecedented cultural, scientific and social change, Victorian England was fascinated with the collection and preservation of insects. Butterflies, and to a lesser extent, beetles were omnipresent in art and fashion. The increasing popularity of amateur naturalism contributed to the popularity of insect preservation as a pastime while the beauty and mystery of the butterfly undoubtedly qualified it as being highly en vogue. Entomology is the study of insects and includes the pinning and preservation of insects for future reference. Entomologists have developed protocols for preserving specimens that are designed to provide consistency throughout collections. In this book our primary focus is on teaching you how to prepare specimens that will look beautiful. Despite this focus we have been careful not to deviate from collection protocols too much. Littered throughout this comprehensive guide are a host of entomology facts, morphology notes as well as practical tips to give you a well-rounded picture of this fascinating field. In order to achieve the best results, you will need to make sure that you plan out your work time effectively and have the correct tools on hand.
