Included are the Society’s original founding documents: the Constitution, Mission Statement and By-Laws as well as Minutes of Board of Directors and General Membership meetings 1956 to 1976. General Correspondence files covering both internal and external correspondence are arranged chronologically. Letters from prominent individuals such as Lady Bird Johnson (1912-2007) appear in these files. Additional correspondence files include the letters, memoranda, and marketing efforts specifically pertaining to the publication of The Bulletin. Some original, published or unpublished, manuscripts submitted for The Bulletin are available. For preservation, newspaper clippings have been photocopied and originals discarded. Photographs of the Society’s early officers are stored separately as VC 0071. VHS tapes have been digitized and are stored separately as AV 0012.

Book excerpt: By examining the metropolitan fringes of Houston in Montgomery County, Texas, and Washington, D.C., in Loudoun County, Virginia, this book combines rural, environmental, and agricultural history to disrupt our view of the southern metropolis. Andrew C. Baker examines the local boosters, gentlemen farmers, historical preservationists, and nature-seeking suburbanites who abandoned the city to live in the metropolitan countryside during the twentieth century. These property owners formed the vanguard of the antigrowth movement that has defined metropolitan fringe politics across the nation. In the rural South, subdivisions, reservoirs, homesteads, and historical villages each obscured the troubling legacies of racism and rural poverty and celebrated a refashioned landscape. That landscape’s historical and environmental “authenticity” served as a foil to the alienation and ugliness of suburbia. While the particulars of each site or issue are unique and nuanced, the following four categorizations can be used to approximately characterize each listing: SAVED: The immediate threat to a resource has been overcome and is not likely to reappear in the foreseeable future LOST: The resource has been demolished or its integrity altered enough to jeopardize its register eligibility STILL ENDANGERED: The threat present at the time of listing is still active, unresolved, and/or could likely reappear in the foreseeable future WATCH LIST: The resource is not currently, actively endangered but may still face threats and should continue to be monitored
