Book Work and Retirement

Download or read book Work and Retirement written by Stanley Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s world recession and widespread unemployment had accentuated an existing trend – more people retiring from work early and living longer after doing so. Some were adequately prepared for a life of well-earned ‘leisure’ in retirement, but too many were not. The policies of employers, unions and governments on retirement needed to be challenged in societies where work opportunities were collapsing but where leisure activities and values were not yet strong enough to take their place. Originally published in 1982, Dr Parker, a sociologist, provides a careful and critical examination of what we knew about retirement and discusses possible alternative answers to the various problems involved at the time. The history of retirement is first considered, followed by a conceptual analysis of types of retirement. There are chapters on preparation for retirement, the capacity of older people to work, and on the varying experiences of retirement. Separate consideration is given to the question of work after retirement age and whether retirement is actually experienced as leisure. The concluding chapter examines various policy alternatives for dealing with the problems raised earlier in the book. Work and Retirement was intended for students of industrial sociology and industrial psychology, for personnel and human resource professionals, for trade unionists and for all those who had an interest in understanding the developments in the field of retirement and the older working population. Now it can be read in its historical context.

Book Time of One s Own

  • Author : Pearl Jephcott
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis

  • ISBN : 1000863212

Download or read book Time of One s Own written by Pearl Jephcott and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1967, Time of One’s Own asks the question: How do young Scots spend their free time nowadays? The Kilbrandon Council asked the University of Glasgow to undertake a study on this subject and their conclusions form the subject of this book. ‘Young Scots’ were confined to those aged fifteen to nineteen, and in the main to those living in three localities which it was hoped were reasonably typical – a mining town in West Lothian and, in Glasgow, an old inner area and a new outlying housing estate. Some three thousand boys and girls provided facts and views. In addition to statistical material the study constantly refers to the ‘how and why’ of the way in which the individual youngster spent their free time. The adults who collected the information agreed that what they saw of the leisure of these adolescents lacked variety and sparkle. On the other hand, a considerable proportion of the boys and girls appeared to be on the brink of using it in less stereotyped ways. Just a little push might have done the trick. In general, the provision for recreation was inadequate. This was especially so in the case of indoor facilities. The Youth Service, which should play so important a role, required far more support. This is a valuable record from the time of what it was like to have ‘Time of One’s Own’, and this reissue is a fascinating addition to all those interested in the history of Education and Sociology.

Book Mr Price 27 Years with the RNLI

Download or read book Mr Price 27 Years with the RNLI written by Chris Price and published by Chris Price. This book was released on 2020-05-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mr Price' Have you ever felt vulnerable near the sea? - top of a cliff, drifting off the beach or boating in bad weather - wind, waves and tide. Running through your mind will be the prospect of a disaster - that sudden realisation that the outdoors is so much bigger than you are. There could quickly come a moment when you are desperate for help. Risk is no longer fun - it's got serious. That moment of acute consciousness is when you need the likes of Mr Price. The British people, inhabiting this island, have a passion for the sea. In summer months we flock to the coast, some venture into the waves, some need to go beyond. Over generations this maritime adventure has taken us to far lands and has given this nation its global reputation as a sea faring nation. This has come at a cost. Charts of the British coast show the marks of wrecks that each tell their own story of weather, misadventure and misfortune. Graveyards in these areas sometimes help tell the grizzly tale of lives ended in such disasters but for so many more, there is no mark on land for those lost to the seas. Back in the early 19th Century when our nation depended so much on nautical supply lines there were an average of 1800 shipwrecks a year. Sir William Hillary set out a plan for a large body of men to be trained and ready to help save lives at sea. And so, in 1824, was born the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. If you have visited the coast you will probably have seen the reassuring presence of those blue and orange craft that you had seen on telly, rescuing lives and craft. It's the RNLI, manifest in its lifeboats, crew wrapped in high-vis oilies and life jackets, helmeted, anonymous. These men and women - all volunteers - represent the bravest of our nation. As we might pray to be lifted from the worst of the weather and the sea, these people respond to the maroon, tog up and set off into the worst of it. The autobiographical account of Mr Price will take you with them out into the face of danger. Chris Price, a craftsman and highly respected professional out in the gun trade, provides, tantalisingly, just sufficient insight into his private life to help us understand the motivations and relationships that hang behind the lifeboatman. Then, it's all about the team. The ups and downs of progressing through the ranks eventually to be called by the skipper to join the crew on a shout. It's written in Chris's own voice - you will get to know this remarkable character well, on and off the boat. The selected stories of just some of his such shouts reveal the true picture of what goes on aboard a lifeboat on operations. The people, their friendships and the utter reliance on each other to be able to do what they do. The weather, the sea sickness, the routines, the exhaustion. The sense of achievement in a successful rescue and the numbing emotions of body recovery. You will be gripped as you travel with them. The excitement will be tangible, you will smell the diesel and the sick. You will be part of the team on board and with them you will laugh and cry. At the end of each chapter you will be exhausted. 'Mr Price' is a read for everyone. The life lessons flood out on every page. Only very few books convey the power of relationships and bonds that exist in small teams under pressure; this is one of them. For seafarers, it is a cautionary tale; for landlubbers it is a glimpse into the perils of the sea. For all, it is the story of real people putting themselves at huge risk to help others. It is spellbinding and an emotional roller-coaster. Simon R West OBE. MA.

Book Shadows of Progress

Download or read book Shadows of Progress written by Patrick Russell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain emerged from war a changed country, facing new social, industrial and cultural challenges. Its documentary film tradition – established in the 1930s and 1940s around legendary figures such as Grierson, Rotha and Jennings – continued evolving, utilising technical advances, displaying robust aesthetic concerns, and benefiting from the entry into the industry of wealthy commercial sponsors. Thousands of films were seen by millions worldwide. Received wisdom has been that British documentary went into swift decline after the war, resurrected only by Free Cinema and the arrival of television documentary. Shadows of Progress demolishes these simplistic assumptions, presenting instead a complex and nuanced picture of the sponsored documentary in flux. Patrick Russell and James Piers Taylor explore the reasons for the period's critical neglect, and address the sponsorship, production, distribution and key themes of British documentary. They paint a vivid picture of institutions – from public bodies to multinational industries – constantly redefining their relationships with film as a form of enlightened public relations. Many of the issues that these films addressed could not be more topical today: the rise of environmentalism; the balance of state and industry, individual and community; a nation and a world travelling from bust to boom and back again. In the second part of the book, contributors from the curatorial and academic world provide career biographies of key film-makers of the period. From Lindsay Anderson's lesser-known early career to neglected film-makers like John Krish, Sarah Erulkar, Eric Marquis and Derrick Knight, a kaleidoscopic picture is built up of the myriad relationships of artist and sponsor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a tale about a club for eccentrics that exists under the guise of an academic establishment; Yoxford University. Through its history dating back to 1791 it accumulated great wealth. The university came to the attention of the press some years ago and was dubbed the home of the strange, the deranged and a small fortune. The university was only in the public eye for a few days then all returned to normal and no more was thought of the press reports, no more that is until the recent death of Professor Extraordinarius, Richard Chaleskins. The professor died a very bizarre death and apparently by his own hand. This was shocking enough for all on campus but they were shocked further the next morning when many received a package in the post that Professor Charleskins had apparently posted just before he took his own life. The packages contained copies of a book he had written and had had privately and secretly printed. The book contained cloaked warnings that the historical press reports of Yoxfords small fortune had attracted the interest of organised crime and that the university was about to be stung, stung to death. To add emphasis to his warning the copy he sent the universitys dean he renamed for whom the horn honks, it honks for thee Basil Friggwynt-Witt. Will this be the end of Yoxford University or will the old adage The Lord looks after fools and Englishmen prove true.

Book The Body and Everyday Life

Download or read book The Body and Everyday Life written by Helen Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in the contemporary social study of the body which has raised important theoretical and methodological questions regarding traditional social and cultural analysis. It has also generated corporeal theories that highlight the fluid, shifting, yet situated character of the body in society. In turn, these corporeal theories have implications for social relations in an era of new technologies and global market economies. The Body and Everyday Life offers a lively and comprehensive introduction to the study of the body. It uses case studies in performance practices to examine the key concepts, methods and critical insights gained from this area. It includes sections on: ethnographies of the body bodies of performance performing gender the ageing performing body. This book clearly illustrates the complex relationships that exist between the body, society and everyday life, and considers the negative and positive implications for the development of future socio-cultural analysis in the field. It will be an invaluable introduction for students of sociology, body studies, gender studies, dance and performance, and cultural studies.
