Book The New Zealand Jewish Community

Download or read book The New Zealand Jewish Community written by Stephen I. Levine and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of a large study of diaspora Jews worldwide in comparison with those in Israel, based on Daniel Elazer's People and Polity: The Organizational Dynamics of World Jewry (1989). Levine (politics, Victoria U. of Wellington) does not, therefore, offer either a history of Jews in New Zealand nor an anecdotal account of their experience, but an analysis that follows Elazer's data, approach, and arrangement so it can be compared with analogous studies of other countries. The topics are Jewish commitment, organizational structure, religion, education, culture, welfare and defense, Israel and world Jewry, constitutional documents, and future prospects. Book New Zealand s Vietnam War

Download or read book New Zealand s Vietnam War written by Ian McGibbon and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark publication provides a comprehensive and authoritative account of New Zealand's involvement in the Vietnam War, and will remain the standard reference work on the subject for decades. Its publication completes the programme of official war histories that began in 1945. Ian McGibbon's primary focus is what New Zealand did in South Vietnam. He traces in detail the operations carried out by New Zealand forces and seeks to illuminate the experience of New Zealand soldiers fighting in a guerrilla war. The command structure, logistic support and operational context of fighting within a primarily Australian framework are all covered. He addresses controversial aspects such as friendly fire incidents, atrocity allegations and veterans' grievances, including over Agent Orange. Maori participation in V Force was substantial and its impact is assessed. Although the book is inevitably weighted towards the military, the efforts of civilians in South Vietnam are also covered in depth. The surgical team operated from 1963 until their evacuation from Qui Nhon just days before North Vietnamese columns entered the city. Not forgotten are the efforts of courageous civilians like Sister Mary Laurence and of Red Cross volunteers to alleviate misery among refugees. The book also describes the dramatic end of New Zealand's involvement in South Vietnam – with the surgical team and the New Zealand Embassy evacuated by RNZAF Bristol Freighters just before the communist victory. Finally, McGibbon surveys the war's troubled aftermath, culminating in the Prime Minister's apology to veterans in 2008.

Book New Zealand and the Soviet Union 1950 1991

Download or read book New Zealand and the Soviet Union 1950 1991 written by A. C. Wilson and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study follows the historty of the relationship between New Zealand and the Soviet Union, especially between the years 1950 and 1991. The emphasis ... is on the official, government to government, relations that defined the context and tone of political and commercial dealings between countries. These official relations, however, shed light on the unofficial relations and the book examines how trade union contacts, the intellectual-cultural climate, and pro- and anti-Soviet lobbies all impacted on the relationship."--Back cover.

Book This Realm of New Zealand

Download or read book This Realm of New Zealand written by Janet McLean and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand is a democratic constitutional monarchy, one of Queen Elizabeth II's sixteen realms. This book provides a comprehensive account of how the Queen, the Governor-General and the Crown interact with our democratically-elected leaders under New Zealand's unwritten constitution. The authors explain how these islands in the South Pacific were first brought within Queen Victoria's dominions, the arrangements then made for their future government, and how those arrangements developed over time with the pressure for democracy and responsible government to become New Zealand's current constitution. They discuss the responsibilities of, and interactions between, the key office-holders: the Sovereign herself; her representative, the Governor-General; the impersonal and perpetual Crown, and the Prime Minister, other Ministers and Members of Parliament. All of them affect in some way the government which runs the country day to day. In an afterword, the authors examine some of the key issues to be considered should New Zealand become a republic. The parliamentary democracy that we take for granted can conceal New Zealand's ultimate constitutional underpinnings in the monarchy. But, as the authors make clear, the monarchy's continuing role in New Zealand's constitution is significant. And understanding the roles of the Queen, the Governor-General and the Crown will be critical as we look forward to debates about the possibility of a republic in New Zealand.

Book The Royal Prerogative and Constitutional Law

Download or read book The Royal Prerogative and Constitutional Law written by Noel Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the royal prerogative in terms of its theory, history and application today. The work explores the development of the royal prerogative through the evolution of imperial government, and more recent structural changes in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the Commonwealth. While examining specific prerogative powers, the development of justiciability of the prerogative, and the exercise of the prerogative, it lays bare the heart of constitutionality in the Westminster system of government. There is said to be a black hole of unaccountable authority at the heart of the constitution and it is this which this book examines. The focus is upon the constitutional development of the United Kingdom and the old dominions of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This approach is comparative and historical, using specific case studies of such events as the dissolution of Parliament and the appointment and dismissal of Prime Ministers. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of Constitutional Law and Politics.
