Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present-Day Europe: Its National States of Mind This book resolved itself from the first into a series of choices. The problem was, how to portray within the limits of a single volume the war psychology of the various European nations. That problem was not an easy one. The portrayal of national states of mind requires treatment differing radically from that employed in a narrative of events. The only satisfactory method of portraying thought and emotion is the use of direct evidence - the testimony of the people themselves. This explains the numerous direct quotations which will be found in the succeeding pages. No words of a foreign observer could mirror the spirit of warring Europe as do the voices of its sons and daughters crying out from a full heart in the very hour of trial. The evidence adduced has been of the most contemporary and popular character. Speeches, press-comment, pamphlets, brochures - the words of and for the moment: these best bespeak the stirrings of the national soul. Official utterances, carefully weighed and craftily spoken as they are, are never quoted save when they faithfully represent popular feeling or when they produce a marked effect upon public opinion. Lastly, natives alone are permitted upon the witness stand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Dynamics of National Identity and Transnational Identities in the Process of European Integration

Download or read book Dynamics of National Identity and Transnational Identities in the Process of European Integration written by Elena Marushiakova and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection was inspired by the international conference "Dynamics of National Identity and Transnational Identities in the Process of European Integration", organized by the Balkan Ethnology Department of the Ethnographic Institute and Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and realized as project of the European Commission Jean Monnet Action Program for the support of Study and Research Centers. The book opens a debate on the changing notions of identity in the region of Central and Eastern Europe on the base of analysis of social developments influenced by EU accession and EU integration process. The most important aspect is the analysis of processes of breaking up the borders of national identity and transition towards new forms of transnational identities and emerging of consciosness of All-European unity. The book has a dual focus: on general topics related to the study of national and transnational identities and on the process of European integration. It brings together the work of researchers not only from different parts of Europe (from France to Russia) but from USA and Asia too. This book is a starting point for East-West discussion and brings new knowledge that will be an invaluable contribution to the common European research area.

Book Feminism National Identity and European Integration in Modern Spain

Download or read book Feminism National Identity and European Integration in Modern Spain written by Kathryn L. Mahaney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-18 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the evolution of Spanish feminism in the context of European feminisms and institutions from the 1960s to recent times. Beginning with Sección Femenina, the official Francoist women's organization, Feminism, National Identity and European Integration in Modern Spain traces the interplay between Spanish women's policy and international policymaking. In some cases, as with the Sección Femenina-championed Law of Political Rights (Ley de Derechos) in 1961, Spanish women's policy at least appeared more progressive than what Western democracies offered – notable at a time when Spain was considered backward. After Franco's death in 1975, Spain's democratic transition seemingly consolidated forward-thinking women's policy with a Constitution that guaranteed equality of the sexes in 1978, and with the creation of a national bureau charged with crafting women's policy, the Instituto de la Mujer (Women's Institute), in 1983. Yet feminists found themselves marginalized in Spanish political decision-making, as Kathryn L. Mahaney argues so successfully in this study. Mahaney reveals that women ultimately influenced domestic policy not by acting within national networks but by leveraging European connections, particularly after Spain joined the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1986. The book shows that Spanish feminists worked through the EEC to gain international approval of policies that had met domestic opposition, and did so by representing them as necessary litmus tests of nations' democratic integrity. Their proposals were shaped by the specific context of Spanish feminism, but also by Spanish debates about what rights democracies should grant women and what equality in a post-fascist nation should encompass. This ground-breaking study explains that, in turn, these processes shaped both Spain's and the European Union's much-prized self-identities as democratic communities.

Book European National Identities

Download or read book European National Identities written by Roland Vogt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making sense of the perplexing diversity of Europe is a challenging task. How compatible are national identities in Europe? What makes Europe European? What do Europeans have in common? European National Identities explores the diversity of European states, nations, and peoples. In doing so, the editors focus on the origins and elements of different national identities in Europe and different themes of national self-understanding. Each chapter contributes a unique view of national identities gravitating around myth, historical experiences and traumas, values, ethnic and linguistic differences, and religious fault lines. This work grounds European national identities within cultural, historical, and political dynamics, which makes the work approachable for many readers, including historians, sociologists, and political scientists. In addition, the editors illustrate that national identities continue to be a source of contention and a challenge to political developments, the demands of immigrants and minorities, and the dynamics of European integration. This book draws particular attention to identity shifts and conflicts within individual European countries.

Book Christianity and National Identity in Twentieth Century Europe

Download or read book Christianity and National Identity in Twentieth Century Europe written by John Carter Wood and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores how Christian individuals and institutions – whether Churches, church-related organisations, clergy, or lay thinkers – combined the topics of faith and national identity in twentieth-century Europe. "National identity" is understood in a broad sense that includes discourses of citizenship, narratives of cultural or linguistic belonging, or attributions of distinct, "national" characteristics. The collection addresses Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox perspectives, considers various geographical contexts, and takes into account processes of cross-national exchange and transfer. It shows how national and denominational identities were often mutually constitutive, at times leading to a strongly exclusionary stance against "other" national or religious groups. In different circumstances, religiously minded thinkers critiqued nationalism, emphasising the universalist strains of their faith, with varying degrees of success. Moreover, throughout the century, and especially since 1945, both church officials and lay Christians have had to come to terms with the relationship between their national and "European" identities and have sought to position themselves within the processes of Europeanisation. Various contexts for the negotiation of faith and nation are addressed: media debates, domestic and international political arenas, inner-denominational and ecumenical movements, church organisations, cosmopolitan intellectual networks and the ideas of individual thinkers.

Book Immigration and Perceptions of National Political Systems in Europe

Download or read book Immigration and Perceptions of National Political Systems in Europe written by Lauren M. McLaren and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration has become one of the most pressing political issues of the modern day, and public opinion polls indicate that it has been of public concern for some time. This book analyses the impact of immigration on perceptions of national political systems in Europe and contends that public concern about immigration is undermining trust in national political institutions and elites, as well as satisfaction with the way democracy is working. Immigration and Perceptions of National Political Systems in Europe contends that immigration presents more substantial challenges to some national identity constructions, and that while national identity in general can help to bolster support for national political systems, those who emphasize lengthy ties to the country are likely to be less positive about their national political systems, particularly when these allow for relatively easy immigrant incorporation. This book also includes an analysis of the impact of concern about immigration on the British political system, and shows that while concern about immigration appears to have been fairly high since the 1960s, it is only in since 1997 that such concern has come to translate into negative perceptions of the British political system.
