Book excerpt: "Has science made religion intellectually implausible? Does it rule out the existence of a personal God? In an age of science can we really believe that the universe has a "purpose"? And, finally, doesn't religion hold much of the blame for the present ecological crisis?" "These questions form the nucleus of today's debate between science and religion. This book is a guide for that debate, identifying the questions, isolating the issues and pointing to ways the questions can be resolved." "There are four possible ways, says John F. Haught, that we can view the relationship between religion and science. First, they can stand in complete opposition - the conflict position. Or, we can believe they are so different that conflict is impossible - the contrast position. A third approach holds that while science and religion are distinct, each has important implications for the other. A fourth way views them as different but mutually supportive."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science

Download or read book History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science written by John William Draper and published by . This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "History of the Conflict between Religion and Science" by John William Draper, first published in 1874, is a seminal work that examines the historical relationship between religion and science, particularly focusing on instances of conflict and tension between the two throughout Western history. Draper, a prominent American scientist, historian, and physician, sets out to explore the complex interactions between religion and science from ancient times to the 19th century. He argues that there has been a persistent conflict between these two spheres of human knowledge, driven by differing worldviews, methodologies, and interpretations of truth. The book begins with an examination of ancient civilizations, discussing how early religious beliefs influenced cosmology, mythology, and the understanding of natural phenomena. Draper traces the emergence of philosophical and scientific inquiry in ancient Greece and Rome, highlighting the tensions that arose between traditional religious beliefs and rational inquiry. Moving forward in time, Draper examines the relationship between religion and science in the Middle Ages, focusing on the conflict between the Catholic Church and early scientists such as Galileo Galilei and Nicolaus Copernicus. He discusses how the Church's adherence to Aristotelian cosmology and its interpretation of biblical passages clashed with the emerging scientific discoveries that challenged traditional views of the cosmos. Draper also explores the impact of the Protestant Reformation and the rise of religious dissent on scientific thought, highlighting how religious and political authorities sought to suppress scientific inquiry that contradicted established dogma. He discusses key figures of the scientific revolution, such as Isaac Newton and Johannes Kepler, who faced opposition from religious authorities but ultimately revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. In the later chapters of the book, Draper examines the conflicts between religion and science in the modern era, including debates over evolution, geology, and biblical criticism. He discusses how advances in scientific knowledge have often been met with resistance and hostility from religious institutions seeking to maintain their authority and doctrinal purity. Throughout the book, Draper argues that the conflict between religion and science stems from fundamental differences in their approaches to truth and knowledge. While religion relies on faith, revelation, and tradition, science employs empirical observation, experimentation, and rational analysis. Draper concludes that while there have been periods of accommodation and dialogue between religion and science, the history of their relationship is marked by recurring conflicts fueled by incompatible worldviews. "History of the Conflict between Religion and Science" remains a landmark work in the study of the relationship between these two influential forces in human society. Draper's exploration of the historical tensions between religion and science continues to provoke thought and discussion on the nature of truth, authority, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years a noticeable trend toward harmonizing the distinct worldviews of science and religion has become increasingly popular. Despite marked public interest, many leading scientists remain skeptical that there is much common ground between scientific knowledge and religious belief. Indeed, they are often antagonistic. Can an accommodation be reached after centuries of conflict? In this stimulating collection of articles on the subject, Paul Kurtz, with the assistance of Barry Karr and Ranjit Sandhu, have assembled the thoughts of scientists from various disciplines. Among the distinguished contributors are Sir Arthur C. Clarke (author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and numerous other works of science fiction); Nobel Prize Laureate Steven Weinberg (professor of physics at the University of Texas at Austin); Neil deGrasse Tyson (Princeton University astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium); James Lovelock (creator of the Gaia hypothesis); Kendrick Frazier (editor of the Skeptical Inquirer); Steven Pinker (professor of psychology at MIT); Richard Dawkins (zoologist at Oxford University); Eugenie Scott (physical anthropologist and executive director of the National Center for Science Education); Owen Gingerich (professor of astronomy at Harvard University); Martin Gardner (prolific popular science writer); the late Richard Feynman (Nobel Prize-winning physicist) and Stephen Jay Gould (professor of geology at Harvard University); and many other eminent scientists and scholars.Among the topics discussed are the Big Bang and the origin of the universe, intelligent design and creationism versus evolution, the nature of the "soul," near-death experiences, communication with the dead, why people do or do not believe in God, and the relationship between religion and ethics.

Book Galileo and the Conflict between Religion and Science

Download or read book Galileo and the Conflict between Religion and Science written by Gregory Dawes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 30 years, historians have rejected what they call the ‘warfare thesis’ – the idea that there is an inevitable conflict between religion and science – insisting that scientists and believers can live in harmony. This book disagrees. Taking as its starting point the most famous of all such conflicts, the Galileo affair, it argues that religious and scientific communities exhibit very different attitudes to knowledge. Scripturally based religions not only claim a source of knowledge distinct from human reason. They are also bound by tradition, insist upon the certainty of their beliefs, and are resistant to radical criticism in ways in which the sciences are not. If traditionally minded believers perceive a clash between what their faith tells them and the findings of modern science, they may well do what the Church authorities did in Galileo’s time. They may attempt to close down the science, insisting that the authority of God’s word trumps that of any ‘merely human’ knowledge. Those of us who value science must take care to ensure this does not happen.

Download or read book Race and Crime written by Elizabeth Brown and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal justice practices such as policing and imprisonment are integral to the creation of racialized experiences in U.S. society. Race as an important category of difference, however, did not arise here with the criminal justice system but rather with the advent of European colonial conquest and the birth of the U.S. racial state. Race and Crime examines how race became a defining feature of the system and why mass incarceration emerged as a new racial management strategy. This book reviews the history of race and criminology and explores the impact of racist colonial legacies on the organization of criminal justice institutions. Using a macrostructural perspective, students will learn to contextualize issues of race, crime, and criminal justice. Topics include: How “coloniality” explains the practices that reproduce racial hierarchies The birth of social science and social programs from the legacies of racial science The defining role of geography and geographical conquest in the continuation of mass incarceration The emergence of the logics of crime control, the War on Drugs, the redefinition of federal law enforcement, and the reallocation of state resources toward prison building, policing, and incarceration How policing, courts, and punishment perpetuate the colonial order through their institutional structures and policies Race and Crime will help students understand how everyday practices of punishment and surveillance are employed in and through the police, courts, and community to create and shape the geographies of injustice in the United States today.
