Book Journalism and the Periodical Press in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Journalism and the Periodical Press in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Joanne Shattock and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly commissioned essays by leading scholars offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the diversity, range and impact of the newspaper and periodical press in nineteenth-century Britain. Essays range from studies of periodical formats in the nineteenth century - reviews, magazines and newspapers - to accounts of individual journalists, many of them eminent writers of the day. The uneasy relationship between the new 'profession' of journalism and the evolving profession of authorship is investigated, as is the impact of technological innovations, such as the telegraph, the typewriter and new processes of illustration. Contributors go on to consider the transnational and global dimensions of the British press and its impact in the rest of the world. As digitisation of historical media opens up new avenues of research, the collection reveals the centrality of the press to our understanding of the nineteenth century.

Download or read book The Presbyterian Magazine Vol 4 written by Cortlandt van Rensselaer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Presbyterian Magazine, Vol. 4: 1854 As this periodical professes to issue from s Presbyterian source, and to be devoted more particularly to the prosperity and extension of the Presbyterian Church, it is important to mark the distinction between an attachment to one's own church and an offensive secta rianism. Is it wrong to love the particular denominations of Chris tians with which we have intelligently and conscientiously thought {noper to connect ourselves? Is it wrong to take counsel, and abour, and make sacrifices for its enlargement and prosperity? Surely an opinion so manifestly erroneous will scarcely be deliber ately maintained. In countries in which there is an established religion, those reli gions bodies which separ'ate from the establishment, and form distinct denominations, are called seats, and those who belong to them see tarz'es. But in countries where there' is no established religion, as in our happy land, in which all denominations, in the eye of the law, are on a level, there can be no sectaries or dissenters in the technical sense of those words. All denominations are equally sects, z'. E. Separate divisions or departments in the great family of nominal Christians. And, of course, when we speak of the Episcopal sect. Book A History of American Magazines Volume II 1850 1865

Download or read book A History of American Magazines Volume II 1850 1865 written by Frank Luther Mott and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1938 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this work, covering the period from 1741-1850, was issued in 1931 by another publisher, and is reissued now without change, under our imprint. The second volume covers the period from 1850 to 1865; the third volume, the period from 1865 to 1885. For each chronological period, Mr. Mott has provided a running history which notes the occurrence of the chief general magazines and the developments in the field of class periodicals, as well as publishing conditions during that period, the development of circulations, advertising, payments to contributors, reader attitudes, changing formats, styles and processes of illustration, and the like. Then in a supplement to that running history, he offers historical sketches of the chief magazines which flourished in the period. These sketches extend far beyond the chronological limitations of the period. The second and third volumes present, altogether, separate sketches of seventy-six magazines, including The North American Review, The Youth's Companion, The Liberator, The Independent, Harper's Monthly, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's Weekly, The Atlantic Monthly, St. Nicholas, and Puck. The whole is an unusual mirror of American civilization.
