A The Bishop of Durham, whose devotion of his sons to the mission work in India has given evidence of the depth of his own interest in missions, recommended some time ago to the clergy of his diocese the study of the present conquests of the Cross. Scarcely any other study can be so fruitful in quickening spiritual purpose and confirming Christian faith. What the mission work is accomplishing is intelligible only in the light of the presence in it of the living power of God. The whole work of missions, however, is too great for Christians any longer to comprehend. Each one must make selection of those phases of it which are of most interest and significance to him. Whatever else may be included in such a selection, we surely must not pass over the mission work of our own Church. Histories of the missions of the various churches make this kind of study possible, and they also give hopeful proof of the power and extent of the missionary enterprise. This little volume is intended to meet the needs of Presbyterians in this regard, and to provide for others who may wish it a brief account of the foreign missionary work of the Presbyterian Church. Her disciple Fidelia Fiske took up the unlikely challenge of applying the Mount Holyoke approach to the education of young women and girls in a remote corner of northwestern Persia. In 1906, Nan Graybill joins the Presbyterian Mission in Persia as principal of the Fiske Seminary for Girls near Urmia. It's her job to pursue the task of training her students in these feminine virtues, now modified and updated for the twentieth century. She considers herself a "modern missionary," aiming for social gospel objectives. But in 1914, the outbreak of war between Ottoman Turkey and Tsarist Russia threatens to trample the Urmia province into dust. The Syriac-speaking Christian community there--Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant--becomes one of the most tragic casualties of the Great War. Nan Graybill and her Assyrian colleagues must lead the school community through this crisis with their own creativity, dedication, tenacity, competence, and courage. Together, they find new ways to endure and to prevail.

Book excerpt: Traditional Chinese medicine developed over thousands of years, but changes introduced from 1835-1935 by American missionary doctors initiated a landslide of cultural revolution in the city of Canton and medical modernization throughout China. Focusing on medical missionaries' ideas and approaches in a principal city of the period, Canton, Guangqiu Xu, a native of Canton, describes the long-term impact of American models of medical work, which are still in place in China today. Despite stiff resistance to change and Chinese suspicion of foreign ideas, the impact of American medical missionaries was profound. They opened medical schools, trained modern doctors, and promoted public health education. These transformations in turn led to major social movements in the modernization of Canton, such as the women's rights movement, modern charity and welfare systems, and modern hygiene campaigns. This book focuses on the changes American doctors brought to Canton, their implementation, what remains of their influence today, and how some of these transformations have spread across China. It shows that the Chinese have themselves become more responsive to cultural relations with the US as part of the acceptance of these changes, and demonstrates how the unique blend of modern Western and traditional Chinese medicines has helped modernize China and make Canton the cradle of modern reform and revolution in China.
