Book African Americans of Wilmington s East Side

Download or read book African Americans of Wilmington s East Side written by Hara Wright-Smith, Ph.D. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilmington's East Side is the oldest residential community in the city. The first Swedish colony settled there in the 1600s, and over time, Jewish, Polish, and African American people followed. By the mid-1950s, the East Side emerged as a predominantly Black, achievement-oriented community--a place where working-class families, Black-owned businesses, and Black doctors, lawyers, teachers, musicians, and community leaders lived, worshipped, and worked together amid segregation. Among historic landmarks are Howard High School, People's Settlement Association, Walnut Street Y, St. Michael's School and Nursery, Clifford Brown Walk, Louis Redding House, and multidenominational churches. Situated in an urban setting east of downtown, the East Side is walking distance from the central business district, small retail establishments, and employers.

Book excerpt: James Kay offers a detailed historical and theological analysis of the theologies of preaching that have dominated Protestant thought. Spanning several theological movements-from the Reformation to Post-Liberalism-Preaching and Theology explores different theological points of view about preaching and covers theologies from Martin Luther to Martin Luther King Jr. and Hans Frei. Kay contends that thinking critically and theologically is necessary for preaching to proceed with honesty, integrity, and faithfulness to the Christian message. Yet for many people, including many preachers, pastors, and professors, theology is itself a negative word. Kay weaves together preaching and theology as he reasons that a "frame of reference" is needed for a proper understanding of preaching as a Christian practice as well as for the vitality of academic or systematic theology.

Book Walking in the Wilderness

Download or read book Walking in the Wilderness written by Beth A. Richardson and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People of faith are struggling these days as they watch unbelievable events unfold. The United States, once a refuge for immigrants, has closed its borders to many of the world's most vulnerable citizens. Fear of people different from us has created an atmosphere of hatred, incivility, and violence. We are living in a time of wilderness and exile. Yet the wilderness is a familiar place for those who follow Jesus. Like Jesus, we spend 40 days in the wilderness. During Lent God calls us to examine ourselves, repent, and make room in our lives for the Holy One. Walking in the Wilderness is meant to be a companion for readers' journey through Lent. It may be studied by individuals or groups. The book includes daily reflections for Ash Wednesday through Easter. Sunday of each week introduces a spiritual practice for the wilderness. The practices for the six Sundays of Lent are Being Present, Lament, Lectio Divina, Trust, Compassion, and Hospitality. Each reading contains a quotation from an Upper Room resource, a short scripture passage, an insightful reflection and prayer written by Richardson, and a single word for readers to carry with them throughout the day. "We come hungry to this season of Lent," Richardson writes, "hungry for words of life, for rituals of preparation, for disciplines to help us on our way." Walking in the Wilderness provides a spiritual feast for readers during the longest season of the Christian year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Including an annotation about the history of the Reformed Churches Helvetic Confessions, the name of two documents expressing the common belief of the Reformed churches of Switzerland. The Second Helvetic Confession (Latin: Confessio Helvetica posterior) was written by Bullinger in 1562 and revised in 1564 as a private exercise. It came to the notice of Elector Palatine Frederick III, who had it translated into German and published. It gained a favorable hold on the Swiss churches, who had found the First Confession too short and too Lutheran. It was adopted by the Reformed Church not only throughout Switzerland but in Scotland (1566), Hungary (1567), France (1571), Poland (1578), and next to the Heidelberg Catechism is the most generally recognized confession of the Reformed Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is often at work through the ordinary: ordinary people, ordinary objects, ordinary grace. Through the ordinary, God communicates epiphanies, salvation, revelation, and reconciliation. It is through the mundane that we hear Gods quiet voice. In this devotion for the season of Lent, Jill J. Duffield draws readers attention to ten ordinary objects that Jesus would have encountered on his way to Jerusalem: dust, bread, the cross, coins, shoes, oil, coats, towels, thorns, and stones. In each object, readers will find meaning in the biblical account of Jesus final days. Each week, readers encounter a new object to consider through Scripture, prayer, and reflection. From Ash Wednesday to Easter, Lent in Plain Sight reminds Christians to open ourselves to the kingdom of God.
