Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cost Control and Accounting for Textile Mills This volume was made possible through the faithful cooperation Of friends and associates who have rendered gen erous assistance and advice and to whom I wish to express my sincere appreciation. Special acknowledgments are due to Mr. James A. Elliott, for constructive criticisms and assist ance in the development of the control accounts, and to Mr. J. H. Bragdon, to whom the lion's share is due for the constant inspiration to undertake the development of such a difficult task. The readers will realize that it is impossible to present every shading Of changes of conditions that might occur in mill management, and the main task was to present sufficient illustrations and material for the development Of a control suitable to meet individual requirements. If this volume will assist in the development Of better cost control methods in the Textile Industry, all efforts have been well paid for. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Cotton Mill Practice and Equipment, 1919: With Classified Buyer's Index When the American cotton trade entered on the business of 1918, therefore, it had to reckon with price-enhancing influences Of the most powerful character, yet with ever - present uncertainty as to the scope and duration of these influences - seeing that the end of the war must sometime be reached - and with all the perplexities arising from the extraordinarily uneven distribution Of the supply of cotton in the world's markets, due to the effects of the war upon the supply of ocean tonnage for commercial uses, upon the movement Of the international exchanges and upon the financial situation Of the several belligerent countries. This unevenness of the distribution of the supply of cotton, moreover, was of special importance to the cotton trade in the United States, because the very fact that this is the greatest cotton-producing country in the world brought it about that the under - supply in foreign countries had as its correlative a continuous over - supply here. It may be said. Then, that the American trade, from the very beginning Of 1918, has been subjected to very strong opposite demand and supply and price-determining forces, whose clash has produced violent upward and downward movements of the markets and has made irregularity and incalculability the rule rather than the exception in the transac tion of the business. As an illustration Of this statement it may be mentioned that there have occurred more than once during the year price fluctuations more extensive (in cents per pound) than the entire average price for cotton in the United States during the decade preced ing the war. Download or read book Cotton Mill Processes and Calculations written by D. A. Tompkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Mill Processes and Calculations: An Elementary Text Book for the Use of Textile Schools and for Home Study In the practice of my profession, Engineering, I have designed and had charge of the construction of a number of cotton mills in the Southern part of the United States. The organization of the necessary force of employees to operate these mills has involved the breaking in of large numbers oi people who had not been before accustomed to cotton mill work; as well as the advancing of others into more responsible places requiring fuller knowledge and better skill. These conditions have brought to me many inquiries from yoimg men and some from young women for a book describing the machines and the processes used in them manufacture of cotton into yarn, sheetings, shirtings, drills, plaids and ginghams. It has been attempted in this volume to give a description of the machines, and exhibit their various functions; also to give rules and formulas for making the calculations, in such a simple way that they may be followed out by any person of ordinary intelligence, and with only a limited common school education. To the student and apprentice, fair whom this book is intended, it might no it be amiss to say that skill in operating machines, and in keeping a manufacturing process well balanced throughout cannot be acquired by reading any book. Both knowledge and skill are necessary in the production of good music. So, in the manufacture of cotton, is both knowledge and skill equally necessary to get the! best results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Cotton Mill Practice and Equipment: With Classified Buyer's Index In the eyes of the-economist by profession this severe price decline is of special interest because of its almost purely psychological charac ter. It really occurred because the majority of persons directly con cerned thought that prices would go down and ought to go down. And not because of any actual diminution of that quantity of money which, according to classic economic theory, determines what the price. Book Influence of Gin and Lint Cleaner Combinations and Mill Cleaning on Dust Levels and Yarn Quality of Acala Cotton Classic Reprint

Download or read book Influence of Gin and Lint Cleaner Combinations and Mill Cleaning on Dust Levels and Yarn Quality of Acala Cotton Classic Reprint written by Joseph B. Cocke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Influence of Gin and Lint Cleaner Combinations and Mill Cleaning on Dust Levels and Yarn Quality of Acala Cotton Dust levels appear to be influenced by the trash content in lint, increasing as the trash content increases. Cultural, harvesting, and ginning practices and varietal characteristics affect trash levels and, therefore, dust levels to varying degrees. The dust level in cotton can be reduced significantly by using lint cleaners at the gin.2 The competitive position of cotton could be enhanced by determining the optimum combination of gin conditioning and cleaning machinery for processing cotton harvested by different methods and containing different quantities of moisture and trash in order 'to obtain a bale with a minimum amount of dust. Lowered dust potential in the bale would helpthe textile mill maintain dust levels within osha standards. However, gin-processing sys tems designed to reduce dust levels must not seriously affect fiber and yarn quality. Other wise, the benefits of reduced dust levels will be offset bya reduction in yarn quality and Spin ning performance. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of gin and lint cleaner combinations and mill-cleaning levels on card-room dust levels and on fiber and yarn quality of Acala cotton. Book Report on English Cotton Mills and Methods Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on English Cotton Mills and Methods Classic Reprint written by Edward Atkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on English Cotton Mills and Methods Having spent the last part of my recent stay in England. In Yorkshire and Lancashire, inspecting mills and machine shops, I observed many differences between English and Ameri can practice, a statement of which may be of some use. I venture to express no opinions upon these differences, because it is some years since I was directly engaged in manufacturing, and also because my observations were of necessity somewhat superficial. You will take them for just what they are worth. The first cotton mill visited was the mill of Messrs. Bowman Bros., at Halifax. These gentlemen own about spindles, which are operated on medium and fine yarns, spun from Orleans, Memphis and Egyptian cotton. A picture of their mill is submitted herewith. Dr. F. H. Bowman, of this firm, is the author of the well-known book upon the cotton fiber, and has lately published a most valuable text book upon the physical sciences for the use of intermediate schools and colleges. His scientific attainments, coupled with the practical skill of his brother. Which he also shares, may render his practice worth the attention of all spinners. With his consent I submit the fol lowing observations which were made in his new mill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
