Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback. The Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control 97 (AIRTC '97) was the seventh in the series of symposia and workshops under the sponsorship of the International Federation of Automatic Control's (IFAC) Co-ordinating Committee in Computer Control and of the Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control.Artificial Intelligence methods, including expert systems, artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems and genetic algorithms, are penetrating almost every field of engineering. These methods have shown their possible application in control, monitoring and supervising tasks which are difficult or impossible to solve when using conventional techniques. We have now come to a stage where there is a need to discuss and present these methods in a broader framework, not only showing their concepts and available algorithms, but also their relative benefits, advantages and disadvantages. This was the purpose of th

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few years two principally different approaches to the design of fuzzy controllers have emerged: heuristics-based design and model-based design. The main motivation for the heuristics-based design is given by the fact that many industrial processes are still controlled in one of the following two ways: - The process is controlled manually by an experienced operator. - The process is controlled by an automatic control system which needs manual, on-line 'trimming' of its parameters by an experienced operator. In both cases it is enough to translate in terms of a set of fuzzy if-then rules the operator's manual control algorithm or manual on-line 'trimming' strategy in order to obtain an equally good, or even better, wholly automatic fuzzy control system. This implies that the design of a fuzzy controller can only be done after a manual control algorithm or trimming strategy exists. It is admitted in the literature on fuzzy control that the heuristics-based approach to the design of fuzzy controllers is very difficult to apply to multiple-inputjmultiple-output control problems which represent the largest part of challenging industrial process control applications. Furthermore, the heuristics-based design lacks systematic and formally verifiable tuning tech niques. Also, studies of the stability, performance, and robustness of a closed loop system incorporating a heuristics-based fuzzy controller can only be done via extensive simulations.

Book Nonlinear System Identification

Download or read book Nonlinear System Identification written by Oliver Nelles and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-09 with total page 1235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides engineers and scientists in academia and industry with a thorough understanding of the underlying principles of nonlinear system identification. It equips them to apply the models and methods discussed to real problems with confidence, while also making them aware of potential difficulties that may arise in practice. Moreover, the book is self-contained, requiring only a basic grasp of matrix algebra, signals and systems, and statistics. Accordingly, it can also serve as an introduction to linear system identification, and provides a practical overview of the major optimization methods used in engineering. The focus is on gaining an intuitive understanding of the subject and the practical application of the techniques discussed. The book is not written in a theorem/proof style; instead, the mathematics is kept to a minimum, and the ideas covered are illustrated with numerous figures, examples, and real-world applications. In the past, nonlinear system identification was a field characterized by a variety of ad-hoc approaches, each applicable only to a very limited class of systems. With the advent of neural networks, fuzzy models, Gaussian process models, and modern structure optimization techniques, a much broader class of systems can now be handled. Although one major aspect of nonlinear systems is that virtually every one is unique, tools have since been developed that allow each approach to be applied to a wide variety of systems.

Book Artificial Intelligence in Design

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence in Design written by D.T. Pham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers have been employed for some time in engineering design mainly as numerical or graphical tools to assist analysis and draughting. The advent of the technology of artificial intelligence and expert systems has enabled computers to be applied to less deterministic design tasks which require symbolic manipulation and reasoning, instead of only routine number processing. This book presents recent examples of such applications, focusing on mechanical and manufacturing design. The term 'design' is interpreted here in its wider sense to include creative activities such as planning. The book covers a wide spectrum of design operations ranging from component and product design through to process, tooling and systems design. Its aim is to expose researchers, engineers and engineering designers to several developments in the emerging field of intelligent CAD and to alert them of the possibilites and opportunities in this exciting field.
