Book Meteorological Measurement Systems

Download or read book Meteorological Measurement Systems written by Fred V. Brock and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats instrumentation used in meteorological surface systems, both on the synoptic scale and the mesoscale, and the instrumentation used in upper air soundings. The text includes material on first- and second-order differential equations as applied to instrument dynamic performance, and required solutions are developed. Sensor physics are emphasized in order to explain how sensors work and to explore the strengths and weaknesses of each design type. The book is organized according to sensor type and function (temperature, humidity, and wind sensors, for example), though several unifying themes are developed for each sensor. Functional diagrams are used to portray sensors as a set of logical functions, and static sensitivity is derived from a sensor's transfer equation, focusing attention on sensor physics and on ways in which particular designs might be improved. Sensor performance specifications are explored, helping to compare various instruments and to tell users what to expect as a reasonable level of performance. Finally, the text examines the critical area of environmental exposure of instruments. In a well-designed, properly installed, and well-maintained meteorological measurement system, exposure problems are usually the largest source of error, making this chapter one of the most useful sections of the book.

Book A Comparison of Lightning Network Data with Surface Weather Observations

Download or read book A Comparison of Lightning Network Data with Surface Weather Observations written by H. Albert Brown and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of a lightning detection network in providing a real-time data base from which automated observations of thunderstorms and lightning in the vicinity of an air base can be derived. A direction-finding cloud-to-ground lightning detection network (LDN) operated by the State Univ. of New York at Albany provided a data base of CG lightning locations in the northeastern United States for July-August, 1986. Copies of the original weather observation forms from 25 AF weather stations in the same area and time period provided a data base of thunderstorm and lightning observations for comparison. The lightning data base was analyzed for strike events located within 15 nm of each weather station. If the 15 minute period lapsed without another strike, the event was ended. Events were categorized as single- or multiple-strike events and the duration of the events tabulated. The weather observation data base was analyzed for thunderstorm events. The beginning time, ending time and duration of the events were tabulated as well as the type of lightning that was reported with each observation. Chronological comparison of the two data bases, using the weather observation data base as 'ground truth', generated 4 X 4 contingency tables of the combinations of thunderstorm-lightning events. Four parameters were derived from the statistical evaluation of the contingency tables: 1) Probability of detection; 2) False alarm rate; 3) Missed threat rate; and 4) Critical success index. Two case studies were performed with the lightning strike data base.

Book Diagnostic Tools in Atmospheric Physics

Download or read book Diagnostic Tools in Atmospheric Physics written by Società italiana di fisica and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses a number of experimental techniques and methods for the treatment of data introduced in the last ten years or so in different fields of the atmospheric sciences. Considerable emphasis has been given since their introduction to the use of satellites or spaceborne measurements with a recent example being the important results obtained with UARS. Of particular interest are the airborne instruments developed for the stratospheric measurement campaign organized by the NASA since 1976 to study the ozone hole and followed later by similar experiments to study the high-latitude ozone depletion in the northern hemisphere. The results of these experiments have helped clarify the role of chlorine-bearing compounds in the ozone depletion and the effect of the heterogeneous processes. The book is organized in 4 chapters: the first 3 divide the different techniques according to the location of the measuring instrumentation (ground, air and space) with the 4th chapter dealing with theory and analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents, for the first time, an authoritative, comprehensive reference on meteorological knowledge and technology. Designed for professionals and technicians outside the meteorological profession, this broad-ranging book offers general guidelines for those who need information on the effects of weather, e.g., on heating requirements and structural strength. Discusses the importance of meteorology in engineering and science as well as its general importance in society.
