Book Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning

Download or read book Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning written by Elana Michelson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over thirty years, portfolios have been used to help adult learners gain recognition for their prior learning and take greater control of their educational experiences. The portfolio has become a distinctive means of assessing such learning, serving as a meaningful alternative to conventional papers and standardized testing. Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning: Perspectives, Models, and Practices provides a primer of flexible approaches to shaping and conducting portfolio-development courses. It offers practitioners in the field an extensive range of model assignments, readings, and classroom activities, each organized around a specific theme: Academic Orientation, The Meaning of Education, Personal Exploration, Learning from the Outsider Within, The World of Work and Careers, and Dimensions of Expertise. Twelve case studies by practitioners in the field then show how academics in the US and around the English-speaking world have adapted the portfolio to changing circumstances in order to deliver academically rich educational services for adults. These case studies highlight portfolio development in the context of web-based instruction, changing institutional imperatives, service to historically disenfranchised groups, partnerships with industry, and cross-institutional cooperation. In addition to serving as a valuable hands-on resource for practitioners, Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning locates portfolios and assessment in a broad social and intellectual context. Thus, the authors also offer an historical overview of the usefulness of portfolios in the assessment of prior learning and then consider their use in the future, given current trends in higher education for adults. The book explores the implications of a changing educational landscape, in which new student populations, budgetary pressures, and understandings of knowledge both enrich and challenge student-centered approaches such as portfolios. The approaches and case studies are not only valuable to adult educators but, equally, to faculty in higher education concerned with the development of competency- and outcomes-based assessment.

Book Assessing Student Portfolios for College Credit

Download or read book Assessing Student Portfolios for College Credit written by CAEL. and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portfolio assessment is an important strategy that supports retention, persistence, and adult student success. Assessing Student Portfolios for College Credit: Everything you Need to Know to Ensure Academic Integrity in Portfolio Assessment, unlike many books on higher education that are written with an emphasis on theoretical constructs without concrete examples, includes actual student portfolios and discusses how to effectively assess students' portfolios. The author, Dr. Leader Kelley, also addresses the myths that have grown up around prior learning assessment, allaying the fears of faculty and administrators through concrete evidence of the value of using portfolio assessments to help adult students succeed. Translating, deciphering, bridging, and/or equating what a learner knows and can do in order to receive college credit can be tricky, daunting, and even overwhelming. Without integrity, the process can undermine the value of the credentials it seeks to make accessible. At its best, the process can provide an academically responsible, motivating, and meaningful bridge to postsecondary education. If taken to scale, this process can unleash unrealized talent and light a pathway toward more meaningful personal and professional lives for millions of individuals, especially adults with some college and no degree. This book provides a valuable resource for a wide range of individuals. Administrators and practitioners will benefit from the pragmatic and accessible information embedded in the multiple portfolio examples. Faculty members can view examples of portfolios that mirror their own syllabi, providing evidence of learning through a written narrative and supportive documentation. The portfolio examples demonstrate how students meet and exceed the learning outcomes for real college courses. - Scott Campbell, Vice President for Higher Education, CAEL.

Book Making Connections

Download or read book Making Connections written by Erica Swenson Danowitz and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior learning assessment has existed for decades but in recent years it has increased in popularity. The advent of the e-Portfolio and the emergence of MOOCs have changed how prior learning may be assessed. The purpose of this study was to examine how higher education institutions adopted and used e-Portfolios in prior learning initiatives. The researcher employed a collective case study and used aspects of Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory as a lens to explore institutional adoption and use of e-Portfolios for prior learning assessment purposes. Participants for this study included a number of institutions that were part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Data from a document review, surveys, and interviews was collected and analyzed to measure how these institutions used e-Portfolios to link traditional college degree programs with prior learning initiatives including possibly knowledge attained through MOOCs. The data findings revealed that e-Portfolios were not being adopted or used to assess prior learning at any of this study's participating institutions. Additionally it appeared that MOOCs were not currently being considered for prior learning opportunities. Interview participants also discussed their struggles with maintaining support and credence of prior learning on their campuses. The findings are relevant for higher education administrators who seek to increase enrollments and college completion rates especially as many institutions face growing competition to attract students and stay relevant in a competitive educational marketplace. Additional research is needed to investigate the future potential of MOOCs, the Badges system, and e-Portfolios to assess and grant credit for prior learning.

Book Prior Learning Assessment an Investigation of Nonsponsored Learning for College Credits

Download or read book Prior Learning Assessment an Investigation of Nonsponsored Learning for College Credits written by Ken Blinkhorn and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1993, Ontario Community Colleges have systematically incorporated a framework for recognizing non-traditional learning through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). PLA allows students to obtain credits towards their. formal education for nonsponsored learning, that is material they have learned through nontraditional settings such as work experience or the home. Within the PLA framework Community colleges have implemented the portfolio development process as a way to assess prior learning through organizing and presenting their nonsponsored learning in a document which can satisfy the requirements of a college course. The research on PLA has been limited to surveys which examine the number and types of assessment used in PLA and procedures on preparing portfolios. There has been no research to date which examines how learners perceive their prior learning. This exploratory case study examines how learners make meaning of their prior learning. The portfolio development process is used as a point of focus because it best represents the transition from nonsponsored learning to the institution's interpretation of experiential learning. For this study, I chose a setting which supported PLA, particularly the portfolio process. Data from interviews, a sample of portfolios and classroom observations were initially analyzed according to five conceptual interpretations: (a) perception of learning; (b) learning style; (c) metacognitive abilities; (d) cognitive development; and (e) learners, needs. An emergent design allowed for other interpretations to be explored as the study progressed. A purposeful sample consisted of four adult learners who were taking a community college portfolio development course. I also interviewed two adult learners who had taken the portfolio development course and had successfully challenged a number of college credits. Since not all mature students take the portfolio development course or challenge college courses through the portfolio development course I interviewed three students who were eligible for the PLA process but did not take this option. The findings from this study showed that all of the students made meaning from their prior learning and applied it to their college studies. Since PLA is no longer funded to the same extent as it was in the past, advocates of PLA at community colleges will need to address the benefits of the portfolio development. This could include both the acquisition of credits and personal development.

Book Career Ready Education Through Experiential Learning

Download or read book Career Ready Education Through Experiential Learning written by Northrup, Pamela and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the promise of competency-based education (CBE), learner-centered issues related to support, retention, and program completion rates remain problematic. In addition, the infrastructure for higher education, including issues related to faculty (intellectual property, workload, and curriculum), pose barriers and challenges in the design, development, implementation, and delivery of CBE. In response, administrators, faculty, designers, and developers of competency-based experiences must incorporate innovative strategies that are foreign to the traditional institution. A strong emphasis on retention and graduation rates must surround the student with support, starting with the design and development of the CBE system. There are few resources that can help prepare instructional designers, advisors, academic administrators, and faculty to meet the many challenges of designing, developing, implementing, and managing CBE. Career Ready Education Through Experiential Learning is an essential reference book that includes strategies for design and development of competency-based education (CBE) programs, as well as administrative and delivery strategies as examples of how CBE can be implemented. Through a strong theoretical framework, chapters present the best practices, strategies, and practical tips as examples and scenarios that can be used in higher education settings. While highlighting education courses, programs, and lessons across various institutions and educational domains, this book is ideal for higher education administrators and policy designers/implementors, instructional designers, curriculum developers, faculty, public policy leaders, students in curriculum and instruction and instructional technology programs, along with researchers and practitioners interested in CBE and experiential learning in higher education.
