Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this ethnographic case study was to explore the cultural of succession planning and leadership development at Libscomb University, using the 5C's: Strategies for succession planning in the academy model. In the face of unprecedented disruption and complexity, the review of literature suggested the higher education sector in the United States is Largely underprepared for the upcoming exodus and shortage of leaders. With religiously-affiliated institutions accounting for more than one in five colleges and universities in the US, there were no visible studies attending to succession planning and leader development in Christian higher education. Given the important contribution of these faith-based institutions to the educational landscape it is both importen

Book Preparing Future Leaders

Book excerpt: Succession planning and leadership development in higher education has come under greater scrutiny in the last decade as a result of a large contingent of college administrators. Small, private, not-for-profit colleges and universities are often more susceptible to the challenges of succession planning and leadership development as a result of scarce resources available for investment in these critical areas. This study focused on the experiences of small, private, not-for-profit college administrators and their use of leader and leadership development as well as succession planning and management strategies. A qualitative, multiple-case study approach was used. The researcher conducted 12 semistructured interviews comprised of a sample of three administrators from four different institutions. Results were organized into three themes, representing the best practices of leader and leadership development, the scarcity of succession planning practices, and the use of informal and formal strategies discovered across the multiple cases. The researcher presented a small college succession planning and management framework, based on this study's findings, aimed at assisting practitioners in implementing a tangible strategy for developing internal leader and leadership capacity that could be used in a long-term leadership development and succession planning and management.

Book A Journey Through Leadership Succession in Higher Education

Download or read book A Journey Through Leadership Succession in Higher Education written by Brenda R. Blackburn and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autoethnographic study explores the problem the researcher faced as a newly appointed leader of an academic services unit. This autoethnography will explore my experience as a newly appointed administrative leader, reflecting on and analyzing my year of experience serving as a director for an academic services unit during a time of limited inbound knowledge and limited leadership succession planning. The purpose of this study was to explore my journey through a professional transition, uncover behaviors and practices that assisted me through that period, draw conclusions about how my experiences are related to existing literature on leadership succession, determine how my experiences can add to the discussion of leadership succession, and suggest ways in which individuals and higher education institutions can improve the transitional process for newly appointed educational leaders. This study is significant, as it recounts my story of navigating my way through the culture, politics, and unwritten practices and policies of my new position at a higher education institution. I utilized my literature review to explore what literature currently exists to support educational leaders during a transition process and to further understand my journey through written narrative in a way that contributes to the existing literature. I examined my experience through this period of transition by comparing my behaviors, thoughts, and actions to the literature, drew conclusions about how my experience was related to existing literature on leadership succession, and determined how my experience can add to the literature of leadership succession. This study finds that it is important to make a commitment to the practice of sustainable leadership as something that matters to the organization. It is important to engage in the practice of sustainable leadership, as it acknowledges that this practice promotes equality and excellence and therefore is socially just. Finally, it is important to engage in open discussion of how sustainable leadership practices should persist through a leadership succession transtion, as doing so will provide an opportunity for the organization to identify how the transition in leadership will occur and provide provisions and detailed strategies for developing future leaders.

Download or read book Succession Planning written by Christopher M. Parfitt and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Succession planning is a concept not well known nor used in education. Businesses, non-profit entities, medical organizations, and the military have used many of the concepts for decades with varying degrees of success. A framework and practical guidelines are provided for anyone with hiring authority or interest in leadership development in educational organizations. The identification of future talent, the targeted and specific development and mentoring, and the retention of the most promising employees comprise the three major components to a quality plan. Most importantly, the unique organizational culture must be considered across every phase. A lack of planning can be costly and detrimental to performance, which in an educational setting equates to lower student achievement. A quality succession plan can be used to foster engagement from all levels of stakeholders and ensure qualified individuals are prepared to assume positions of greater authority at every level of the organization. There is no universal answer, no “one-size-fits-all” approach; however, with strategic initiatives and the proper support from senior leaders, a leadership pipeline can be established in any educational organization, not just for the present, but for future needs.

Download or read book The Succession Principle written by David L. McKenna and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Succession is the hot topic in leadership development, but the subject has rarely been addressed in Christian literature. As a college, university, and seminary president who experienced three successions in leadership, David McKenna is eminently qualified to speak on the subject. He begins by introducing us to the Succession Principle: What we bring to leadership is important. What we do in leadership is more important. What we leave from our leadership is most important of all. Once our priority shifts from success to succession, the door is open to read John 17 as the Prayer of Succession for Jesus. In this final report, Jesus transfers to his disciples and to us the same enduring trust, transforming truth, and unifying love that he has received for leadership from his Father. With these legacies come specific gifts of succession to complete our task, develop disciples, advance the kingdom, and see the fulfillment of Christ's promise, "Greater things than these shall you do." Succession in the spirit of Christ, then, is written not in terms of success, but in the seamless transition of sustainable gifts culminating in the gift of greater things.

Book The Exploration of Executive Leadership Succession Planning Strategies in New Jersey Community Colleges

Download or read book The Exploration of Executive Leadership Succession Planning Strategies in New Jersey Community Colleges written by Mary Marken Trickel and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to escalating impending retirements, the American Association of Community Colleges has recognized a potential crisis in community college executive leadership. Leadership succession planning has rarely been incorporated into community college strategic planning, although college presidents and boards of trustees have acknowledged an impending crisis. The lack of leadership development opportunities may preclude advancement by those serving as middle management administrators. Leadership succession planning has been used in the business sector to identify high performers with leadership potential, and provide leadership development to prepare individuals for senior level positions. Strategic planning for leadership succession was studied in the New Jersey Community College System, using a qualitative, multi-case study. Triangulation included interviews with college leadership to address the study's research questions, survey instrument distribution to college administrators, and investigation of archival documents. Research disclosed that community college leaders valued the principle of leadership succession planning, but most colleges did not have succession planning or leadership development programs intended to develop college executives. A major focus to address the potential crisis in executive leadership succession planning is the determination of what comprises an effectual plan. Based on the study's data, recommendations include (a) leadership succession, (b) development of a succession-planning consortium, (c) communication of a formal succession plan, (d) identification of potential high performers, and (e) formal mentoring at individual institutions.

Book Exploring Sucession Planning for Executive Leadership Positions Within Ohio s Faith based Organizations

Download or read book Exploring Sucession Planning for Executive Leadership Positions Within Ohio s Faith based Organizations written by Gilda Drammeh and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The predicted shortage in the number of qualified professionals available to fill vacant executive leadership positions is a significant concern for the non-profit sector. This qualitative multiple-case study explored the general problem of the potential lack of succession planning, resulting in the inability to identify future leaders within Ohio’s faith-based organizations. Specifically, this study concentrated on the selection process of candidates for executive leadership positions, and the succession planning process that contributed to a successful or failure to implement. In a purposeful sample, eighteen (18) senior leaders located in the eastern and western regions of Ohio, were selected for this study. As part of the conceptual framework, Hershey and Blanchard’s (1993) situational leadership theory were used to understand the group facilitator’s leadership style during succession planning activities. Data was collected and analyzed from semi-structured interviews, documents, and archival records. Findings are discussed from the perspective of senior leaders, which included current and former volunteers, and employees that previously participated in succession planning activities to appoint a new leader at Ohio’s faith-based organizations. Five themes emerged from the study and highlighted the strategies chosen by senior leaders as they prepared for succession planning activities. Furthermore, the results of this study and the future recommendations provided, contributed to the body of knowledge, and expanded the topic of succession planning for executive leadership positions in the non-profit sector.

Book Leadership Succession

Download or read book Leadership Succession written by Stewart D. Friedman and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the most critical strategic activity in any organization, namely, who gets chosen to sit in the top echelon of the pyramid. Friedman argues that it is the quality of corporate leadership that will determine corporate winners and losers in the global competitive game. The stakes in leadership succession are high. The selection of key figures is the one human resource activity that no one belittles for being of secondary importance. Indeed, leadership succession is so important and central in many executive minds that it crowds out any other work. The succession process is often fraught with political intrigue, it lacks discipline, and excludes meaningful involvement of senior human resource executives. The contributors to this imaginative volume reveal a succession planning process that is frequently sloppy, superficial, and regularly sabotaged by senior management when they give it short shrift in terms of quality time. In addition, senior management often overrides sound decisions when it comes to filling key positions. The result is a lack of integrity throughout the human resource systems that eventually leads to a collapse of belief in the system and its governance. Noel M. Tichy, a leading figure in the studies of human resource management, has said, "Stewart Friedman is to be congratulated for a successful effort in providing a state of the art look at leadership succession. [He] provides us with an empirical database of what is happening in U.S. corporations, helpful prescriptions for future improvement of leadership succession, and a realistic assessment of the human resource executive challenges in this area."
